Second-half strikes from Jon Routledge and Darian Mackinnon gave Hamilton a comfortable win over lower-league Annan as they progressed into the second round of the Scottish Communities League Cup.

Accies midfielder Routledge went close to breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute, but his close-range effort was turned past the right-hand upright by visiting goalkeeper Craig Summersgill.

Summersgill was keeping Annan in the tie and he tipped over Gary Fraser's long-range drive as the game remained goalless at the interval.

Routledge broke the visitors' resistance 21 minutes into the second half as he connected with Jon McShane's header to fire a left-footed drive into the bottom right-hand corner.

And substitute Mackinnon sealed victory for Billy Reid's side as he drilled Steven Hendrie's pass into the bottom left-hand corner 10 minutes from time.
