England 0-0 Italy (AET. Italy win 4-2 on penalties): England play Italy for the first time in a competitive fixtures since 2000 when Gennaro Gattuso scored the winner in Torino. The Three Lions have a dismal record at this stage though, winning only three of 10 quarter-final ties
Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, fresh from winning the Premier League title with his club, gets a start up front for Cesare Prandelli's side having scored in the last group game against Republic of Ireland. England select the same side that won 1-0 against Ukraine
Italy have the first chance of the game as Daniele de Rossi's sliced shot flies past Joe Hart, but the England goalkeeper is relieved to see the ball come back off the woodwork
England work the ball well down the right flank and Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson finds space in the box, six yards out. He cannot quite get his feet out of a tangle and Gianluigi Buffon is able to claw Johnson's poked effort away
John Terry is caught out positionally and Balotelli finds himself through on goal, but the Chelsea captain recovers to make a last ditch tackle to thwart the striker
The former Inter Milan striker finds space in the box after a chipped ball by Antonio Cassano. This time he attempts a scissors-kick but it goes straight at Hart. They teams go in to the dressing rooms goalless at half-time
The first chance of the second half falls to midfielder De Rossi, whose shot goes wide of goal. The Roma man should have done better with that opportunity
England have a chance to win it when Wayne Rooney tries an audacious overhead kick, but it goes flying over the bar and the match goes into extra time
Italy have the ball in the back of the net in extra time, but the ball is ruled out as AC Milan midfielder Antonio Nocerino is offside. The match goes to penalties
Richardo Montolivo misses a penalty for Italy, but Ashley Young does the same, as does Ashley Cole who sees his penalty saved by Buffon
Former West Ham midfielder Alessandro Diamanti steps up and tucks home the winning penalty for Italy
Despite not having the best record, Italy celebrate another shoot-out win having clinched the 2006 World Cup in the same fashion against France. They come up against Germany in the semi-finals
For England, it is another penalty shoot-out defeat and go out at the quarter-final stage once again
