Winger Ashley Cain heads from Telford to Transylvania

Winger Ashley Cain is on the verge of signing for a club in Transylvania following his release by AFC Telford.

Cain, 21, had a successful trial with Romanian League outfit CS Gaz Metan Medias, earning him a place on their pre-season tour to Hungary.

The former Coventry player was without a club after leaving Telford in May.

CS Gaz Metan Medias facts

  • Founded in 1945
  • 13th in Liga 1, 2011-12
  • Head coach is Cristian Pustai
  • Gaz Metan is one of the biggest stadiums in central Transylvania
  • Reached last season's Europa League play-offs, beating FSV Mainz 05 on penalties in the third qualifying round. They were knocked out by Austria Vienna.

"I got approached by someone who said a club in Romania were looking for a player with my sort of background," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"And it's a chance to play at the top level," added Cain, who only moved to the Bucks Head last November but was one of eight players released by Telford following their flirtation with relegation in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Scouts from Cluj and Steaua Buchareșt have also been tracking the progress of Cain, who cancelled a flight back to the UK to go on the Black Wolves' pre-season tour.

But the ambitious, Nuneaton-born youngster, who also played for Mansfield Town and Tamworth and had loan spells with Luton Town and Oxford United, hopes the experience of playing in Eastern Europe will pay off.

"If a chance comes along to play as high as you can, whether that's in England or abroad, maybe that's the route you have to take," he said.

"I've got no kids. It's the perfect time for me to try and make it somewhere, to give myself a chance.

"I'm putting in 110% effort, hopefully something will happen."
