As it happened
-
2008:
But this is where I must bid you all farewell. Thanks for keeping me company during England's final warm-up before they head for Poland and Ukraine. You wouldn't say they were impressive against Belgium, but a win is a win I suppose. When I next see you, Euro 2012 will be under way and Roy Hodgson is right - results are the only thing that matter there. Cheerio for now.
-
2007:
The Netherlands and Northern Ireland have kicked off the second-half in Amsterdam. More goals to come in that one? Probably.
-
2006:
Incidentally, I spent an entertaining half-hour chatting to Italy legend and current Republic of Ireland assistant boss Marco Tardelli about what makes Giovanni Trapattoni tick.
I think I was the 100,000th person to ask Tardelli about his 1982 World Cup final goal celebration, but he didn't seem to mind.
-
Lorenzo, via text: "Man Utd are always praised for grinding results out, we did the same today again. Thought it was the sign of a true champion?"
-
2000:
News of another country in Euro 2012 warm-up action now. Eduardo put Croatia 1-0 up with 11 minutes to go in their friendly in Norway, but the home side salvaged a draw thanks to Tarik Elyounoussi's last-gasp leveller.
The Republic of Ireland play Croatia in their opening Group C match on 10 June.
-
1955:
I have also spoken to the Czech Republic's general manager Vladimir Smicer about how his side have tried to find replacements for their 'golden generation', most of whom have retired now.
With great difficulty is the answer, although the spirit of Euro '96, when Smicer, Pavel Nedved and Karel Poborsky inspired a stunning run to the final in their country's first appearance at a major finals, means the former Liverpool midfielder has not given up hope of a similar explosion of talent this summer.
-
Dave, via text: "Winning 1-0 is still a win. People seem to gloss over how boring Spain were in the world cup. Passing it around all the time rather than defending is no more exciting. Didn't spain win all their games 1-0 at WC2010?"
Rob, in Windermere, via text: "Another 1-0 win, jut another 6 and we will be European champions!"
-
1952:
Er, this rampant Dutch display is probably the wrong time to tell you about the chat I had with Oranje legends Frank de Boer, Arnold Muhren and Ruud Krol about why the Netherlands need to be pragmatic in Poland and Ukraine.
I'm sure most Northern Ireland fans would be pleased to see them take their foot of the pedal in the second half tonight and concentrate on defending. Can't see it happening, though can you?
-
1949:
It's half-time in Amsterdam, with the Dutch leading Northern Ireland 4-0. At a rough estimate, I think Bert van Marwijk's side had about 400 shots in the first 45 minutes but you'd best check that with Opta.
-
Leeds lad, via text: "Lets not get too negative we look solid just need to start with walcott to counter the french and give a little more up front would look at giving jones a crack at right back."
-
1946:
There is a lovely contrast at the Amsterdam ArenA between orange (the Dutch players and fans who are completely decked out in that colour) and green (the pitch and the Northern Ireland players).
It is still pretty much attack against defence at the moment, and I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you which side is doing which.
-
1943:
More from England boss Roy Hodgson, this time on his side's lack of possession against Belgium: "They had a lot of the ball but didn't create many chances. Once we settle down and find a more stable line-up and the line-up we are backing, I think we will do more with the ball. I thought we were dangerous on the counter-attack.
"As far as I am concerned I am only prepared to praise the team after two 1-0 victories."
-
1938:
Sorry, scratch that. It is 4-0 to the Netherlands.
Arjen Robben runs past about four men and feeds Robin van Persie, who waits for Ibrahim Afellay - arriving at speed on the overlap - to hammer in a fierce shot.
-
1936:
The Dutch are playing in orange shirts with orange numbers on the back of them - handy for commentators, that.
Anyway they have scored a third goal. Robin van Persie scores a penalty after a handball by Northern Ireland's Shane Ferguson inside the box.
-
1932:
Roy Hodgson after seeing England beat Belgium to make it two wins out of two since he took charge: "I'm very pleased. I used a lot of players and there was a lot of disruption in the second half with changes. But it's a very good end to the week against a good Belgian side. I'm more than happy that we came off with another win.
And on seeing Gary Cahill and John Terry pick up knocks at Wembley: "We've got another few injury concerns. Gary Cahill is slightly more of a concern because it's a jaw injury.
"We hope that the scan doesn't show any fracture and that he can still play in the tournament. John Terry felt his hamstring, it wasn't major but we still need to scan it to be 100% sure."
-
1931:
England goalkeeper Joe Hart on his side's win in their final warm-up game before Euro 2012: "It was a really tough game - a little bit bitty at times. There was a lot changes but it was a good result against Belgium, who are a strong side and they'll be better in the future.
"Vincent Kompany told me about them and that they're coming up. I think Danny Welbeck took the goal well - it always helps when you've got top quality strikers that take those kind of chances."
-
Kyle, from London, via text: "Judge England on how they perform against France. And stop talking about expectations because England always expects, for one reason or another."
Will, via text: "Don't get all the negativity. Going into a major tournament with a manager with 100% win record."
Karl, via text: "For the first tournament in a long time, England have a world-class keeper. And not one that can't deal with high, looping balls. That's a huge advantage over previous tournaments. And I don't usually give England a sniff."
-
1930:
Hmmm, looking at those stats, I think we need to work on our passing a bit. Shall I tell Roy, or do you want to?
Anyway, I'm sure that England display has whetted your appetite for Poland and Ukraine so now seems a good time to tell you about our sweepstake kit for Euro 2012 - pick for tournament winner.

1926:
Here's the full-time stats from Wembley, courtesy of Opta.
England 1-0 Belgium; Attempts on goal 11-19 Shot on target 1-6 Passes 375-564; Pass accuracy 82%-88% Possession 41%-59%. Next up, France!
-
Robin, from Coventry, via text: "Can't understand why everyone is whinging. This is about RH getting to grips with what he has available - plenty learned and good to see a bit of cohesion with the back-four. We need to work on midfield and a decent kicker of the dead-ball but it was a passable performance i feel."
Mark, via text: "I do not see what all the negativity is about? England were defensive yes but we built from the back, Italy have done that for years, Greece won the Euros with defensive tactics and it could be the 'new' England way. Oh and what a finish by Welbeck, great composure from a young lad one for the future. So a win and a clean sheet!"
-
Former England manager Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 liveOn the likely reaction to England's performance: "Whatever happened during the game, Roy Hodgson will emphasise that they have won, but it starts now. It doesn't matter that we won two games 1-0. He will say, 'we qualified well, now let's surprise a few people.' That will be his approach.
"We have had two successive 1-0 wins without conceding so I think the press will leave it and see how things go in the tournament."
-
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"England just sat in a zone and played a very organised game which going forward offered very little. They nicked a goal and hit the post but they have to do a lot more if they want to win competitions.
"The plus is a clean sheet but going forward we were very limited. We lost the ball too easily. And that could be the problem. If France or Sweden score first then it will be very difficult to come back."
-
1918:
I've got another Dutch goal to tell you about.
Wesley Sneijder's direct free-kick makes it 2-0 to the Netherlands in the 15th minute. This could be a long old night for an inexperienced Northern Ireland side.
-
Tim, via text: "I don't know what all the fuss was about; the goal-line technology didn't interrupt the flow of the game at all!"
Tom, from Edinburgh, via text: "A Rooney Clone (see 1903) would be a Clooney, though maybe not as good looking."
-
Neal Collins on Twitter: "Roy Hodgson England's George Graham, remember the days of '1-0 to the Arsenal'? England leave on Wednesday full of erm... hope?"
Pete Wick on Twitter: "Stop the whinging. If we keep talking about low expectations, let's actually have them, not moan about not winning 6-0."
-
1916:
News from elsewhere now, and the Netherlands have scored an early goal in their friendly against Northern Ireland. Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has headed the Dutch into an 11th-minute lead in Amsterdam.
-
OptaJoe on Twitter: "1 - England scored with their only shot on target against Belgium. The visitors had six. Efficient."
-
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer"England win 1-0. Like Norway, solid and unspectacular but will leave Hodgson in good heart for Euro 2012."
-
1912:
So, England's record under Roy Hodgson reads: played two, won two, scored two and conceded none. So far, so good... although I would not like to look at their possession stats.
Can they really play like this - largely without the ball - against France in Donetsk on 11 June? It looks like they will try.
-
Stephen Cheatley on Twitter: "Don't fall for any hype. England are boring & average. Same old. We will exit Euros at the group stage."
Matt Collingwood on Twitter: "Are those saying that France will destroy us the same people who were saying Belgium would, this time last week?"
James Brooker on Twitter: "A lot of talk of England being 'the new Chelsea'. I really hope so, about time we won something. Fed up with losing heroically."
-
1909:FULL-TIME- England 1-0 Belgium
-
1909:
Belgium, meanwhile, are still looking dangerous.
They have definitely improved in the final third as this game has gone on and Joe Hart has to be alert to dive and keep out a drilled effort from Marouane Fellaini.
Moments later, Romelu Lukaku is wrongly flagged offside as he looks to run on to a Fellaini pass. I think England have gotten away with this.
-
1904:
Another sniff of a second goal for England. Theo Walcott bursts on to a loose ball inside the Belgium half and feeds Jermain Defoe who, perhaps optimistically goes for goal from the edge of the area and from a tightish angle.
Defoe has done his prospects no harm today but it does not look like he will cap a decent display with a goal because he fires into the side netting and the chance is gone.
-
Simon, via text: "Its funny how many doom mongers there are out there. We don't have the quality in our squad to play with verve and panache so Hodgson is going for the collective effort which is our only decent chance of getting anywhere in Euro 2012."
-
1903:
There will be four minutes of stoppage time at Wembley. Gary Neville has spent most of the second half in the England technical area and he is still out there, yelling instructions to his players.
-
Jason O'Brien on Twitter: "This is west brom in disguise france will keep the for 90 minutes and take us to the cleaners first game."
Richard Lindle on Twitter: "Wish we could clone Rooney, he's everywhere. Or would that mean his clones would miss the first two games?"
-
1902:
If this approach gets England results in Poland and Ukraine then nobody will complain (too much) but they are riding their luck a bit in the closing minutes here.
Jan Vertonghen and Marouane Fellaini have both wasted decent headed chances for Belgium, who will probably think they deserve to be level at least.
-
1900:
As discussed, Belgium have seen a lot more of the ball than England today. It is difficult to put Belgium's control in stats but after 80 minutes they were ahead in possession (61%-39%), passes 500-310 and pass completion 89%-81% according to Opta.
-
Sam, via text: "Glen Johnson having a shocker. Making no tackles, giving the ball away stupidly, trying to run the pitch and losing it... Micah Richards a far better choice!"
-
1858:
A second England goal would obviously add a bit of a sheen to their display but I'm not sure they deserve it.
Anyway, Roy Hodgson is still making changes and his latest one sees Jordan Henderson replace his Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard. Wayne Rooney takes over the captain's armband for the rest of the game.
-
1855:HITS THE WOODWORK
England's turn to hit the woodwork, with Jermain Defoe unlucky to strike the base of the post after making space for an angled shot inside the box. Ten minutes of the 90 to go and England still lead 1-0.
-
Davysteen, from Antrim, via text: "I see England are resorting to Chelsea's Champions League tactics. Defend, defend, defend and try and steal something on the break. Boring but effective."
Nathan, from Reading, via text: "It's not pretty but it's the type of performance to stifle oppositions and win quarter/semi finals."
-
Joleon Lescott is back on now, head strapped up in Terry Butcher-fashion.
That does not stop England suffering another scare, with Joe Hart far too casual in dealing with a back-pass and fortunate that the referee adjudges Romelu Lukalu fouls him as he tried to close him down.
-
1852:HITS THE WOODWORK
Belgium produce their best effort while England are down to 10 men.
It comes from their right-back, Guillaume Gillet, who latches on to a loose ball about 25 yards from goal and sees his deliciously curving first-time shot come back off the post with Joe Hart beaten. Unlucky.
-
1851:
Some good defending from Ashley Cole sees him block a shot at goal by Romelu Lukalu but play is soon stopped because Joleon Lescott is absolutely covered in (his own) blood.
Not sure how it happened either - it must have been a clash of heads - but Lescott is now getting stitched up on the sidelines.
-
Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"I think Roy is taking the chance to look at all the players. I don't think we should read too much into the game and all the changes. It's all about the tournament, then we will see exactly what England are about."
-
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer"Roy Hodgson's England clearly do not mind letting the opposition have plenty of the ball. The problems will come when they meet a team who can do more with in front of goal than Norway and Belgium."
-
Andrew, from Teddington, via text: "Re 1826 maybe England do have the whingiest fans. But they also have one of the best leagues in the world, so they know quality when they see it and when they don't."
-
Wasim Khan on Twitter: "Hazard is not living up to his own hype if this match is anything to go by."
Mayowa Olubowale on Twitter: "Hazard is definitely living up to the hype."
Pat Peculiar on Twitter: "I think Hazard will do well in the EPL, but playing against England today is showing him how much harder it'll be than Ligue 1!"
-
1848:
Speaking of Eden Hazard, he has flitted in and out of this game but has at least had both of Belgium's best efforts on goal. Will be interesting to see him playing behind an effective striker next season too... that has not been the case today.
-
1846:
It's definitely substitute o'clock now. Chelsea's Romelu Lukalu is on for Dries Mertens as Belgium make another change. By the way, I'm pretty sure that Eden Hazard will want to have a bigger impact in his first season at Stamford Bridge than Lukalu managed.
-
1844:
James Milner and Theo Walcott have just switched flanks, which makes a lot more sense. England still look hungry to extend their lead, with Wayne Rooney almost releasing Jermain Defoe with a pinpoint low pass. Only some good defending stops him from doing so.
-
1843:SUBSTITUTION
Theo Walcott is on the left wing and Jermain Defoe is operating ahead of Wayne Rooney up front so England are still playing 4-4-2. Roy Hodgson has decided he is going to make another switch, with Phil Jagielka on for John Terry.
-
1840:
Right, time for some England changes. Jermain Defoe and Theo Walcott are on for Ashley Young and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The men coming on have about 25 minutes to impress Roy Hodgson and play their way into his starting XI.
-
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley on BBC Radio 5 live:
"It's all Belgium at the moment. They are having a good spell. For England if it stays like this, it's a win and another clean sheet. But attacking wise, we have lacked ideas."
-
Bill, in Hereford, via text: "Hazard hasn't impressed anyone at all I don't think. England playing well in my opinion just need to be more clinical."
-
1836:
England have gone a little bit ragged in the last couple of minutes and they are giving the ball away too easily again all of a sudden. Belgium cannot capitalise, though, mainly because they lack a decent final ball and England have plenty of men back to cover.
-
Martin Armitage on Twitter: "Starting to see why Belgium are not goin to euro 2012."
Simon G on Twitter: "Not sure why Belgium aren't playing Lukaku really?"
-
1836:
Better by Belgium, particularly in the final third.
First Eden Hazard has a pot-shot from distance, but his curling effort is well read by Joe Hart. Then the visitors work the ball into the box and Marouane Fellaini finds space to shoot, but his low shot does not strretch the Manchester City keeper.
-
Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"England have started the second half much better. The introduction of Wayne Rooney gives us a different view of the England side straight away. He will want the ball and even though he is pushed up front, he will come off and that gives the 4-4-2 that flexibility we need."
-
1834:SUBSTITUTION
With half-an-hour to go, Belgium make their first change. Kevin Mirallas is off and Nacer Chadli is on. I wonder if he has brought his shooting boots?
-
Robert, via text: "With the likes of Jack Wilshere, Jack Rodwell and Tom Cleverly to come back from injury Englands prospect may be a bit different in the future."
-
1831:
Just like Danny Welbeck, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has made a positive impression today.
He has been up and down that left flank, and runs at the Belgian right-back Guillaume Gillet here before being crowded out by Moussa Dembele. He wants a foul, but play continues.
-
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter: "Danny Welbeck showing signs of becoming a top class goalscorer. Go largely unnoticed, but when it counts...."
-
1828:
Belgium resort to having a pop from long range, but Dries Mertens is hopelessly off target with his effort.
If Belgium had a decent striker they would be extremely dangerous... as things stand it seems easy to keep them at arms length.
-
1826:SUBSTITUTION
Time for another England change. Wayne Rooney is coming on for Danny Welbeck, who should be very pleased with his day's work.
Welbeck gets a deserved ovation as he jogs off and goes straight down the tunnel, possibly to get treatment on the ankle that has restricted him of late.
-
1826:
Belgium have settled down a bit now and are concentrating on keeping the ball again, although they are not doing too much with it right now.
All their attacks are being snuffed out on the edge of the England box, with James Milner working his socks off.
-
Kevin Turner on Twitter: "If there was a competition to find the worlds whingiest fans, England would win every time."
Tom Cowans on Twitter: "England are the new Chelsea? Pack the back and see what you get on the break. At least we would be playing to our "strengths"."
James Smyth on Twitter: "England are annoyingly average. Annoying in that you can't complain because they're doing ok despite having no style at all."
-
1823:
Former England captain David Beckham was speaking at half-time about the new England set-up, including his old Manchester United team-mate Gary Neville: "I've never seen Gary so tired! I'm sure he's doing a great job and the guys have a lot of respect for him. There will always be expectations on an England team going into a big competition.
"We have a lot of talented young players coming through and we're looking forward to it. I'll be watching Euro 2012 as a fan. I want England to do well and succeed in every game."
-
1822:
More news on Gary Cahill. I'm told he has now gone to hospital for an X-ray on his injured jaw, just as a precaution.
-
1821:
Yep, England are hoisting some dangerous crosses into the Belgium area, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the man behind most of them. Belgium hold out.
-
1820:
England start the second half in the same way they ended the first - on the attack.
-
1819:
The second half has just started at Wembley. No changes from either England or Belgium at the break.
-
1819:
News from some of those other Euro 2012 warm-ups now.
The two 16:00 BST kick offs featuring Poland and Denmark have finished. No surprise that both teams eased to wins. Poland settled for a 4-0 victory over Andorra while the Danes beat Australia 2-0, with Liverpool's Daniel Agger getting the opening goal from the penalty spot.
-
1817:
Blimey, I'm quite alarmed by the size of David Beckham's moustache - it's huge.
I'm pretty sure he won't be able to run about at the Olympics if he doesn't shave it off soon.
-
Julian Tan on Twitter: "England always play with lots of grit and determination. Just add technique on there and we should be on our way."
Tim G on Twitter: "It's a warm up game! Germany lost 5-3 against Switzerland and Holland hasn't been impressive either. These games say nothing!"
-
1816:
Bobby Moore, who won 108 caps, was represented by his widow Stephanie Moore while Billy Wright, who won 105 caps, is represented by his daughter Babette Wright.
Bobby Charlton (106 caps), Peter Shilton (125) and David Beckham (115) were presented with their special Uefa '100th caps' by Football Association chairman David Bernstein.
-
Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"If Belgium had an end product, they would be ahead at the moment.
"It concerns me, England's 4-4-2 with a rigid formation. We have to have more flexibility. We haven't seen the wide men come in, they have stayed there.
"Against the very, very good national sides, we would definitely be in trouble playing this way."
-
1811:
Uefa are honouring England's 100-cap men on the pitch at half-time at Wembley.
David Beckham, Bobby Charlton, Peter Shilton and the late Bobby Moore and Billy Wright are the men being recognised in a special ceremony.
-
Luke, from London, via text: "Don't understand all this negativity - were one nil up and how many clear cut chances have Belgium had? At the euros defensive stability is what's going to get us far."
Mark, via text: "Can't complain about the 1st half clean sheet and what a finish by Welbeck he needs to play with Rooney and young when they are all available great composure from such a young lad."
Ian, from London, via text: "Sorry but that was dire. Worst England team since the Graham Taylor era."
-
1810:
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"England have gone in 1-0 up but they haven't played well. The 4-4-2 is not flexible enough. Belgium have dominated possession and England have been far too obvious. England are rigid in zones.
"Ashley Young has played up front and that's not his position. He is not playing off the front man. I would bring James Milner in [to central midfield]. Put Young wide and free up Steven Gerrard because Gerrard has got quality. There is no doubt about that."
-
Tom Bradstreet on Twitter: "If Young wakes up and Walcott takes Milner's spot on the right, the second half could yet give us plenty to cheer about."
Ben Gooding on Twitter: "Completely outclassed by a team that includes Fellaini...any hope of a new England under Roy has been well and truly crushed."
Robin Chapman on Twitter: "why do they always ruin beautifull national anthems with a live performance. IT DOESN'T WORK!"
-
1809:
So we've had one England injury (to Gary Cahill's jaw, and thankfully not looking like it is serious) and one England goal (a cracker) in the first 45 minutes. I wouldn't say it has been the most convincing of displays but, to those of you who are only interested in the scoreline, England are half-way to a job well done.
-
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: "Back in numbers + counter attack is the 'new' England..I'm seeing quarter finals at least here. Hard to beat with that set up. Pace on break."
-
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football WriterHALF-TIME- England 1-0 Belgium"Hardly a thriller but England and manager Roy Hodgson will be happy with the lead. The link between Manchester United team-mates Ashley Young and Danny Welbeck for the latter's goal will have made very interesting viewing for Hodgson as he ponders his Euro 2012 striking options."
-
1802:HALF-TIME- England 1-0 Belgium
-
Uzzy, from Coventry, via text: "Good finish by Wellbeck. Poor quality on show soo far. England need to pick up the pace. Belgium have also been disappointing soo far."
Ben, via text: "Belgium can play a passing game because they have a technically excellent back four. Even Barcelona would struggle to play possession football with England's defenders - it limits the midfielders' options."
-
1802:
England almost end the first half with a second goal. We are into stoppage time when Timmy Simons is caught in possession and allows James Milner and Ashley Young to tee-up Steven Gerrard inside the Belgium box.
Gerrard tries to place his shot in the bottom corner but does not get it quite right and the visitors eventually clear their lines. Even so, I am starting to realise why they did not qualify for Euro 2012.
-
Martin, via text: "I don't care about the performance, it's all about results at this level. So far so good."
You don't care about the performance? What, even in friendlies that are just warm-ups on the eve of major tournaments?
-
Opta Sports on Twitter: "11 - Ashley Young has scored or assisted 11 of England's last 20 goals. Influence."
-
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"Dembele got caught in midfield, it was a lovely weighted pass by Young and it's a class finish by Welbeck. If you are going to use this type of 4-4-2 you have to press harder and higher.
"There they pressed, won the ball and scored from it. What's letting Belgium down is they just haven't got the final ball. But they get in great areas and always have players available."
-
1755:
Belgium look short of a cutting edge to me, although Eden Hazard is trying his best to make things happen. This time he lets fly from the edge of the area with a dipping, swerving shot that Joe Hart has to watch carefully to make sure he gets his body behind the ball. A solid stop.
-
Josh Welshy Jones on Twitter: "The Welbeck chip the only good part of a very lacklustre England performance."
Dom Samways on Twitter: "Excellent finish from Welbeck, the Man Utd connection working. Gotta be Young-Rooney-Welback when all available."
Bobby Brown on Twitter: "What a finish by Welbeck. That was Messi-like."
-
1755:
There are five minutes left of the first half and suddenly all is rosy in England's garden. Well, sort of. Up until Danny Welbeck's goal they had been very lacklustre.
-
1751:GOAL- England 1-0 Belgium - Danny Welbeck (36 minutes)
This is a really classy finish from Danny Welbeck, for his first senior England goal. He and Steven Gerrard combine to put pressure on Moussa Dembele and win the ball back as Belgium try to build from the back.
Welbeck does not stop running as the ball is fed to Ashley Young and then cleverly played on to him, sprinting into the area and expertly clipping the ball over Simon Mignolet. Top-quality stuff all round.
-
Ian Rowbotham on Twitter: "FIFA rankings - England 7th, Belgium, beaten once in last 16 games (by Germany) 44th. How do they work that out?"
Segun Agbaje on Twitter: "Belgium are playing like a team aware that they literally ooze so much individual class. Swagger is the Word to use here."
James Elton on Twitter: "England have got to sort out their passing if they want any chance against France. disappointing for supposed quality players."
-
1747:
This has not been the most entertaining of encounters so far, and Belgium, and then England sum up the lack of quality - or verve - on display by wasting free-kicks in quick succession. Eden Hazard gives the ball away and, after an England counter-attack is ended by a foul, Ashley Young over-hits his delivery.
-
1745:YELLOW CARD- England's Scott Parker
Scott Parker is late and wild when he lunges in on Jan Vertonghen, and he deservedly goes into referee Peter Rasmussen's book. Ashley Cole is fortunate not to join him, when he brings down Eden Hazard soon afterwards - Hazard has started to look very lively.
-
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"England have followed on from the Norway game. They look sloppy and are giving the ball away far too easily. Belgium are the better side so far. I think Ashley Young is playing too high and they have got more bodies in midfield. England are getting exposed."
-
1743:
An update on Gary Cahill's condition, and it is good news. The Chelsea defender took a bang to the jaw in that collision with Joe Hart, which is why he was taken off but the hope is that he will not need an X-ray.
-
Mollie Xo on Twitter: "Opening 30 minutes isn't filling me with confidence for the France game! Much improvement needed."
Tinashe M Shoko on Twitter: "Belgium look technically better than England but then so does everyone else."
Lloyd Solts on Twitter: "Our right hand side looks very week. Swap Johnson and Milner for Jones and Walcott. More strength, pace and quality."
-
Geoff, via text: "Sorry to be pessimistic, but it is already totally evident that Belgium are a far superior footballing team and they haven't even qualified for Euro 2012. We are maybe 20-30 years behind the top European teams. I blame the footballing dinosaurs of the FA who have left English football in the dark ages. Maybe Gareth Southgate is our saviour."
-
1742:
Belgium threaten again. Glen Johnson concedes a free-kick on the right and Eden Hazard whips it in. This is dangerous, but John Terry is in the right place to get his head on it and Johnson completes the clearance.
-
1741:
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer"Beautifully constructed paper aeroplanes heading towards the press seats., Says a bit about the game's failure to capture the attention."
-
1738:
Belgium have been pretty quiet so far in terms of chances but they are still probing patiently and almost get a goal out of nothing here when Aexl Witsel ends a neat build-up by flashing a 25-yard shot a fraction over Joe Hart's bar.
-
1737:
BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty at Wembley"Gary Cahill definitely came off second best following that collision with Joe Hart, forced by a rather sneaky push by Dries Mertens. England manager Roy Hodgson looked concerned but hopefully a precautionary move to replace Cahill. Take no chances today."
-
1736:
Twenty minutes gone and England are trying to build down the right now. That means James Milner and Glen Johnson are seeing more of the ball, but the latter sees his attempted cross blocked before it reaches Danny Welbeck.
-
Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"It's been a slow start by England but Belgium are moving the ball well.Their forwards move about and change such a lot. England have come back into it a bit more and are starting to show a bit of confidence."
-
Arsenal fan Jake, via text: "Oxlade-Chamberlain showing confidence so far, excited for next season with him."
-
1734:SUBSTITUTION
It seems Gary Cahill cannot continue. He is off, with Joleon Lescott coming into the centre of defence instead. England are not taking any chances there - let's just hope Cahill is alright.
-
1732:YELLOW CARD- Belgium's Dries Mertens
Not the most convincing defending by England here, with Gary Cahill attempting to shepherd a bouncing ball through to keeper Joe Hart, who is not exactly keen to come out and claim it.
Belgium's Dries Mertens puts Cahill under pressure and then decides to give the Chelsea defender a big shove in the back, sending him flying into Hart and leaving him looking a bit groggy. Mertens, deservedly, is booked.
-
1730:
Another shot for England, and another shot for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He does a bit better with this one too, getting hold of a first-time shot from 25-yards out after Danny Welbeck retrieves a ball over the top.
He is yet to test Belgium keeper Simon Mignolet, though, because this latest effort fizzed a few yards over the bar.
-
1729:
Eden Hazard has shown some flashes of neat skill in the opening minutes but he is yet to really burst into life, although he is hardly alone on that front.
Anyway, he had a poor cross blocked earlier and has just over-hit an attempted slide-rule pass too.
-
Harry, from London via text: "England playing that traditional, rustic, pint of beer, fish and chips, leather football and a flat cap 4-4-2!"
-
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"Now we see why Belgium haven't qualified for the tournament. They look great going forward but don't get many behind the ball and that was a good chance for Oxlade-Chamberlain.
"If England are brave enough to pass the ball and want it in good areas, they can create chances because Belgium don't look the best defensively."
-
1726:
Again, England look to keep the ball and again Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is involved. He looks to burst past a couple of Belgium players and the only way they can stop him is by fouling him.
-
Nick Evangelista on Twitter: "Difficult to find a national team with more hair than Belgium."
Keith Claridge on Twitter: "England look awful in the openining few mins. Hoofing the ball, instead of passing it."
Zaiem Khan on Twitter: "A bit of a hectic start - it will settle, but already signs that players dont want to pick up an injury."
-
1724:
This is more like it. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain runs at Guillaume Gillet, and leaves him trailing in his wake. The Arsenal winger is quickly crowded out down the left but England keep the ball and, when Steven Gerrard is fouled, they release James Milner down the right.
Milner's pull-back finds Oxlade-Chamberlain arriving in space on the edge of the area but he slips as he shoots and makes a mess of his attempted finish. Even so, that's easily England's best moment of the first 10 minutes.
-
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 live"Belgium seem to be playing with a really attacking line-up with Fellaini pushed right up and Hazard as the centre-forward and plenty of support. England are playing very deep and are being pressed a lot. England are giving the ball away within two passes of getting it. They need to settle."
-
1720:
Yes, Belgium are playing the patient passing game, but they are not afraid to lump it forward to Marouane Fellaini when it suits them. England are still not getting much in the way of possession.
-
1719:
England give the ball away again, with Steven Gerrard the guilty party this time. Moussa Dembele cannot quite make the most of the opportunity but the visitors have definitely had the better of the first four minutes.
-
1717:
England have to wait about 45 seconds to put their foot on the ball, and Scott Parker and Ashley Cole promptly give it away. Early impressions of Belgium are they like to try to keep possession. We shall see if that proves to be correct.
-
1715:KICK-OFF
Here we go then. Belgium get us under way.
-
Chris, from Cwmbran, via text: "Sipping some Belgian beer but hoping for an England win!! Am starting to get excited about the Euros at last!!!"
Michael, via text: "I love how everyone says low expectations will help England win the Euros. That doesn't count as low expectations if you still talk about winning......"
Mikey, in Berkshire, via text: "Eden Hazard needs to score a double hat-trick, do a thousand step overs and solve the Eurozone crisis today, to live up to his own hype."
-
Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 liveOn how England will try to break down opposition defences, starting with Belgium today: "Roy will want to mix up the play. He won't be afraid to go back to front now and again. When it is on do it. When you are coming up against the French team I think you will need to control the ball up front and go through the midfield a bit quicker."
-
Rio Ferdinand, who was left out of Roy Hodgson's England squad, on Twitter: "Come on englaaaaaaaaaand, give us a performance boys! Welbeck will score! Excited to see how the Oxlade plays, young talent. Witsel for me will be a top player in the next few yrs too."
-
1713:
And now for a special Queen's Diamond Jubilee version of 'God Save The Queen'. Impressive singing-along by the England side too - maybe that is what Gary Neville's last-minute instructions were all about?
-
1710:
It's anthem time, starting with Belgium's. Their 7,500 travelling fans enjoyed that.
-
1709:
And here they come. Blimey, they seem to keep on coming too... the England squad and backroom team is massive. One quick question: Does Gary Neville EVER stop talking?
-
1707:
Right then, the players are in the tunnel at Wembley. Oh, and it is actually Thomas Vermaelen who will captain the Belgians, NOT Marouane Fellaini.
-
1705:
Former England winger Chris Waddle at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 liveOn Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, called into England's Euro 2012 squad this week because of Frank Lampard's injury: "He's had an inconsistent season and his form hasn't been great.
"He's probably thinking 'I'm lucky to get in this squad'. He hasn't done well at Liverpool this season so it will be interesting to see how his confidence is if he gets on."
-
1704:LINE-UPS- England v Belgium (1715 BST)

Referee: Peter Rasmussen (Denmark)
-
1703:
Time for some amended team line-ups in the light of Vincent Kompany's late omission. Thomas Vermaelen will captain Belgium today, instead of the Manchester City defender...
-
Matt, from York, via text: "Nice to see for once lower expectations for the euros, maybe we will do well without the nations media on the players shoulders? Plus if we do badly, I've heard something about some olympic event in london happening after."
Luke, in London, via text: "This will be a very interesting game for us Spurs fans! Can't wait to see more of Vertonghen, hopefully he'll play a blinder. Vermaelen will be at fault for England's goals though."
-
1702:
Here's England boss Roy Hodgson, speaking before kick-off at Wembley about giving Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain his first senior international start: "He is in the squad, he's done well in training and it's important to get a look at him.
"It's a big ask of him today but, if we don't give him the opportunity, we'll be wondering how he can cope in the tournament. It's not make or break but it'll be nice if he can go on and show what a quality footballer he is.
On picking Danny Welbeck up front: "Danny is now fit and he needs some minutes behind him. I don't want to go into the Euros with these players not playing. I've not worked out my starting XI for the tournament yet."
-
Henry Walmsley on Twitter: "been really looking forward to this game, not to see England disappoint, but to see Dembele play, always a joy to watch."
Jamie Hardesty on Twitter: "England game script: Gerrard to overhit passes, Terry sent off, Young to dive, Parker to get injured, Ox to disappoint. zzzzz.."
Hugo Morrissey on Twitter: "Chamberlain starting for England tonight! There's definitely a lot more to be excited about in this match than the Norway game."
-
1658:
CONFIRMED: Vincent Kompany will not start for Belgium - but it is because he failed a fitness test in the warm-up, rather than picked up an injury. Timmy Simons comes into their defence instead.
-
1657:LINE-UPS- England v Belgium (1715 BST)
England: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Milner, Parker, Gerrard, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Young, Welbeck. Subs: Green, Jones, Baines, Lescott, Jagielka, Henderson, Downing, Defoe, Rooney, Carroll, Walcott, Butland.
Belgium: Mignolet, Guillaume Gillet, Kompany, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Hazard, Fellaini, Witsel, Mertens, Mirallas, Dembele. Subs: Renard, Simons, De Camargo, Pocognoli, Chadli, Benteke, Vossen, Lukaku, Odoi, Nainggolan, De Ceulaer, Defour.
Referee: Peter Rasmussen (Denmark)
-
1652:
Oh dear. This is bad news for Belgium, if it proves to be true.
I am hearing that their captain, Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, has been injured in the warm-up and is unable to play. More news when I get it.
-
From Faris in Putney: "As a Fulham fan I've been a huge admirer of Moussa Dembele since his first game in English football; he's one of the most talented players to have graced Craven Cottage in the past few years and it will be a terrible shame when he is inevitably poached by a so-called 'bigger club' this summer."
I thought this was a wonderfully positive text... until I got to the end.
-
Vad, from London, via text: "It's ridiculous how much expectations are being placed on young ox!! It appears with this much pressure a half decent game won't even be enough."
Farukh, via text: "Very dissapointed that Walcott isn't playing. England need his pace and direct threat. Also links up with well with the Ox!!"
Lee, from London, via text: "The back four have all worn a Chelsea shirt. Not too bad given the club's recent defensive heroics!"
-
1650:
Former England manager Graham Taylor at Wembley, BBC Radio 5 liveOn England's tactics under Roy Hodgson: "If we do end up playing a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1 and then don't have flexibility, then we won't succeed, either in the short term or the long term.
"You can have success playing with those formations but you need movement You will not succeed at international level unless you have some flexibility and movement."
-
1646:
NEWSFLASH: Poland are now 3-0 up against Andorra. I WON'T be bringing you further goal-updates from that game because, if I do, I won't have time to tell you about anything else.
-
From Lisa in Putney: "I think regardless of the result, nine of the players in England team will start against the French. Two decisions to make: Carroll/Welbeck and The Ox/Walcott or Downing! I would be just happy to see us play some good stuff!"
-
Infostrada Sports on Twitter: "Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the youngest player in the starting line-up for England since Micah Richards (18 Nov 2006, vs Netherlands 1-1)."
-
QPR midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter: "Looking forward to England game later. Some exciting young players given a chance. Won't be easy mind, the Belgians are not bad. Good test! I think we'll all know a lot more about our chances after tonights match."
-
1641:
Hmmm, can anyone tell me why joint-hosts Poland are bothering to play Andorra today?
What is the point of that, unless they need a confidence boost, or are expecting to beat Greece 10-0 in the Euro 2012 curtain-raiser in Warsaw on Friday?
-
1639:
There are a few other warm-up games going on today. Here's the details:
Five of England's fellow Euro 2012 qualifiers are also in action. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, but should England progress to the latter stages then Roy Hodgson's men may come up against one of the following.
There are two 16:00 BST kicks-offs. Tournament co-hosts Poland are already 1-0 up against Andorra courtesy of Ludovic Obraniak and Denmark are 0-0 against Australia.
In the later games, Croatia face Norway, who England beat 1-0 last Saturday. That gets under way at 18:00 BST.
And Portugal, who of course beat England on penalties in Euro 2004 and in the World Cup two years later, face Turkey [19:00 kick off] while one of the tournament favourites, theNetherlands, play Northern Ireland [19:45].
-
1639:
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football WriterEngland v Belgium (1715 BST)"One look at Belgium's team suggests this will be no gentle send-off to Euro 2012 for England.
"There is Premier League quality in the shape of Mignolet, Kompany, Vermaelen, Fellaini and Dembele. Eden Hazard will play for Chelsea next season while Jan Vertonghen is expected to move to Spurs."
-
Karim Sedaoui on Twitter: "Forget Hazard, England definitely need to watch out for Kevin Mirallas and Axel Witsel. Both cracking players."
Alex Munro via Twitter: "That Belgium side has some top class players in it. If they pulled it together as a team they could do pretty well."
Ed Hewings via Twitter: "With that squad, Belgium for an outside shout for Euro2016?"
-
1634:
By the way, if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can emulate his dad's first appearance at Wembley, then he will probably be happy.
Former Stoke City winger Mark Chamberlain, who won a total of eight caps, scored on his debut against Luxembourg in a European Championship qualifier in December 1982.
England went on to win that game 9-0, with Luther Blissett scoring a hat-trick... I can't help thinking Belgium might put up a bit stiffer opposition today, mind.
-
From Ben Cook in London: "Roy Hodgson has managed to stir up my excitement for the Euros by starting Young, the Ox and Welbeck. Potential."
-
1632:
So, forget England-Belgium, it seems today is now all about The Ox vs Hazard.
Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen, who will be up against his Gunners team-mate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain today, admits he was surprised to see him make Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad.
Vermaelen said: "I was a little bit surprised to see him called up.
"But in the end he has been a great player for us, for Arsenal, and I think he deserves to be there. From my point of view, I think he will do great if he gets some time to play."
-
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football WriterEngland v Belgium (1715 BST)"England manager Roy Hodgson's bold decision to give Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain his first start adds an extra layer of intrigue to the Wembley friendly against Belgium.
"Can the teenager produce the sort of explosive form to give Hodgson food for thought before Euro 2012? Big day for striker Danny Welbeck too as he tries to prove he has fully recovered from an ankle injury."
-
Abdi Rashid on Twitter: "All eyes on Hazard today, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has chance to outshine him."
Gene Yew on Twitter: "All this hype about Hazard ... Parker will have him in his pocket. It's all about Chamberlain today!! He is fearless."
Cameron Laws on Twitter: "If i'm honest, looking at that England team starting, I'm excited, they could definitely do a job!"
-
1622:
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football WriterEngland v Belgium (1715 BST)"It's all change at the back for England from the side which beat Norway seven days ago. Joe Hart replaces West Ham's Robert Green in goal while Roy Hodgson starts with his first-choice back four of Glen Johnson, Gary Cahill, John Terry and Ashley Cole. The men to make way are Phil Jones, Joleon Lescott, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines.
"The two other changes see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replace Stewart Downing and Danny Welbeck come in up front instead of Andy Carroll.
"Belgium make five changes from the side which drew 2-2 with Montenegro last weekend. Manchester City's captain Vincent Kompany, Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen, Fulham's Moussa Dembele and Sunderland's Simon Mignoletis are among those coming into the side.
"In all, the team contains five current Premier League players and two potential additions in winger Eden Hazard (who looks set to join Chelsea) and centre-half Jan Vertonghen (who will be watched at Wembley by Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, who is trying to sign him)."
-
1621:
England boss Roy Hodgson spoke a couple of days ago about what his Wembley debut as England manager will mean to him.
"Managing at Wembley is fantastic," he said. "My first visit there was to watch West Ham against Fulham in the 1975 Cup Final.
"So whilst last week (his first game, against Norway in Oslo) was good it won't compare to this. "Ninety thousand people at Wembley, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It will be a very big occasion for me."
-
OptaJoe on Twitter: 2 - The only England managers (excl. caretakers) to lose their first home game in charge are Sir Alf Ramsey & Sir Bobby Robson. Knightmare.
-
Steve via text: "England look good at the back and defensively, but a real lack of creativity up front. Hopefully do a greece at the euros?"
Jon via text: "Downing and Henderson will be key for us today, if we can keep them on the bench we'll have a great chance."
-
1612:
The England team that starts today is: Joe Hart, Glen Johnson, Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Steven Gerrard, James Milner, Scott Parker, Danny Welbeck, Ashley Young, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
-
1611:England v Belgium (1715 BST)
BREAKING: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain starts for England against Belgium as Roy Hodgson makes seven changes from last week's friendly against Norway. All the details coming right up.
-
1606:
Ben makes a good point below - it will be very interesting to see how the use of Hawk-Eye pans out at Wembley, although Tottenham fans probably think it is a couple of months too late.
By the way, today's match officials will have no access to data and the trial will have no impact on any contentious goal-line decisions, should we get any of course.
-
Ben Ganesh, fom London, via text: "Buzzing for a really positive England win tonight and a performance by our youngsters to outshine £32 mill Hazard! Also bear a thought for the Hawk-Eye trial taking place - for once I'm hoping there's a contentious decision tonight!!"
-
Johnny Hogan on Twitter: "Interesting in how Hazard will perform with so much focus on him. My money would be on a painfully average 6/10."
-
1605:
By the way, it is not just England's players who will worth keeping an eye on at Wembley today.
Soon-to-be Chelsea forward Eden Hazard will be in action, giving us a chance to take a close look at one of the highest-rated young talents in world football.
He is meant to be completing his move from Lille in the next day or too - I suppose he could always pop into Stamford Bridge to sign his contract when the game finishes tonight.
-
1600:
If horse-racing is your thing, you probably want to know that the Derby is just about to start at Epsom. To be fair, if horse-racing is your thing, you probably already knew that.
-
1557:
Speaking of nostalgia, there is a cracking series of pieces looking back at all 13 European Championships since the tournament was first held in 1960 on the BBC Sport website.
If you want to know more about how Wales reached the quarter-finals in '76, or France's Magic Square of '84, then check it out. Me? I did go back to '96 as it happens, for a bit more from Barry D and Alan Shearer's memories too.
-
1554:
Is it me or is there a distinct lack of excitement about the European Championship right now?
An impressive England win would definitely help whip up a bit of fervour but, in the meantime, maybe this will help? Graham Love from Aberdeen has recreated some classic Euros moments in Lego (other block based building toys are available).
The bit showing Stuart Pearce penalty versus Spain actually gave me goosebumps, probably because the use of Barry Davies' original commentary took me right back to Euro '96.
-
Jack, from Nuneaton via text: "I'm excited by the Ox, I think he's destined for a bright future at Arsenal and for England. I hope today he causes a bit of stir and earns a starting place against France."
John, via text: "Definitely think Adam Johnson should be going to Europe over Oxlaide-Chamberlain. Had more game time and more goals to show for it. Anyway, 2-1 Belgium today if we play the boring football we did against Norway."
Sanj, from Hertfordshire, via text: "Excited to see the Ox start today, hope he adds the much needed urgency and pace into the team."
-
1549:
So, what can we expect from England today? There is plenty of chat that 18-year-old Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will make his first senior start, and the same goes for Scott Parker and Danny Welbeck as that pair try to work on their fitness.
Roy Hodgson's squad has been hit by injuries to Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry and John Ruddy in the past few days so I suppose the most important thing is that there are no more problems on that front.
Still, a few goals and a win isn't too much to ask, is it? Or is it?
-
1545:
Phil McNulty at Wembley, BBC Sport Chief Football WriterEngland v Belgium (1715 BST)"Wembley is in readiness to host Roy Hodgson's first home game as England manager - but the atmosphere around the stadium before kick-off currently has a distinct Belgian flavour. The red shirts of Belgium are in evidence as their side tries to give Hodgson and England the wrong sort of send-off for Euro 2012."
-
1540:
There should be a lot more to come from Kompany and co, though.
Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who will play against England today said: "We have a really decent team, a really decent squad. The problem for us has been that we've not converted all that talent into results.
"We should have qualified for the Euros with all the quality we have, but we didn't. However, hopefully we can kick on and make sure we qualify for the World Cup."
-
1534:
Yep, looking at some of Belgium's players - the likes of Vincent Kompany, Eden Hazard, Moussa Dembele and Marouane Fellaini - you might be wondering why they are not at Euro 2012 themselves. I know I did.
The answer is that they finished third in Group A behind Germany and Turkey, mainly because they took only one point from four games against the teams that finished above them.
-
Ollie Claxton on Twitter: "Quite looking forward to seeing this Belgium team in action against England... Lots of good things have been said about them!"
-
Ben Norris and Danny Tomlinson via text: "On the way to the game on a coach of smelly boys, big up England and Hodgson we can do it LADS!!!"
-
1531:
So, whether you have got the answer to England's midfield problems, or want to make a suggestion as to who should be the next manager of the Swans or the Canaries (or the Baggies etc etc too), I want to hear from you. Tweet me using the hashtag #bbcfootball or text us on 81111 (UK). Make sure YOU PUT YOUR NAME on those texts though.
-
1525:
Kick-off at Wembley is 1715 BST, which means we have got plenty of time to discuss England's chances. Do we really need THAT long, though?
There is plenty more to talk about too, namely the start of the managerial merry-go-round which has seen Liverpool and now Aston Villa fill their vacancies in the last couple of days, leaving Swansea and Norwich to begin their search for a new boss.
-
1518:
Yep, there will be 90,000 fans at Wembley today, giving Hodgson and his boys a right Roy-al send-off as they take on Belgium in a friendly that will hopefully answer a few questions about the fitness and form of several individuals.
Then the next stop is Krakow and the start of England's bid to become champions of Europe for the first time. How are you feeling about that by the way?
-
1515:
Afternoon folks. So, it's the Queen's Diamond Jubilee weekend, it's Roy Hodgson's home debut as England boss and it's also England's final warm-up game before Euro 2012.
I hope you lot have remembered to put some bunting up, because it is time to get this party started. At the very least, can you wave a flag or something?
