As it happened

  1. 2205:

So what have we learned this evening? How now Falcao, fires magical Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory, while a tangerine dream in Birmingham takes Blackpool to Wembley. The next chapter in that story will be written on 19 May. Before then, on Sunday, the last act of of a remarkable season will be played out, with Tom Rostance your narrator. Thanks for your company.

  2. 2203:

Has tonight lived up to expectations? I think so. Blackpool looked home and hosed, but Birmingham's fightback was heroic. In the end though, it was just too much. In Bucharest, the game wasn't as close as we would have liked, but Madrid were sensational. Radamel Falcao is some player, you'll hear more from him I'm sure.

  3.

More from Sam Allardyce: "The form we've shown in the last six matches and in the play-off is fantastic. It's all about holding our nerve. We are the favourites but in a one-off anything can happen."

  4.

Ed Sturgess on Twitter: "62nd match one too much, but still a great effort by Hughton given the state of the club! Keep right on!"

  5.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, whose side meet Blackpool in the play-off final: "I'm not sure what we did in the league against either of these but it will not make any difference at Wembley. If anything Blackpool will have the edge of the two because Blackpool did it (won in the play-offs) two years ago. It will not be easy and whatever swings and roundabouts turn you have to hope that it goes your way."

  6.

More from Ian Holloway: "Words are going to fail me. I'm so proud. We got ourselves in a fantastic situation. What a comeback by them. It's over and we've done it. I've got a great group of lads. We've played some fantastic stuff and I think we are getting better."

  7.

James Ward on Twitter: "Ever seen so many grown men cry at losing? Incredible. Shows depth of passion running through Bilbao. They LOVE their club."

  8.

Francis White on Twitter: "Falcao was simply unplayable. Madrid paid less for him than Liverpool paid for Carroll. Torres cost almost twice as much. Class."

  9.

Shahil Somani on Twitter: "As a Fulham fan I know exactly how Bilbao fans must feel right now. Credit must go to Atletico though!"

  10.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway: "I'm so proud, we got ourselves in a brilliant situation, but what a fantastic fightback that was. If they got an equaliser, I couldn't see us coming back, but it's over and we're going to Wembley again."

  11. 2151:

The Madrid players are up now to collect the winners' medals, and of course, the huge vase-like trophy. Many of them draped in Spain flags, they are the fifth Spanish side in nine years to win the competition. Captain Gabi is last up, he his handed the trophy by Michel Platini, the ticker tape goes up in the air, and a long night of celebrations in the Spanish capital begin.

  12.

Christian Reilly on Twitter: "Sat with Bilbao supporters, can't understand the lingo but 'I can't believe it's 3-0 when we've played this well' might be it."

  13. 2147:

Bilbao collect their runners-up medals - there's hardly a player not in tears.

  14.

Benjamin Heaton on Twitter: "Que sera sera. Whatever will be will be. Blackpool's going to Wembley. Que sera sera."

  15. 2145:

The Madrid win is also a triumph for coach Diego Simeone, who has turned their season around since taking over in December. He also becomes only the third man to win the Uefa Cup/Europa League as both a player and manager.

  16. 2144:

The Europa League trophy is being engraved in Bucharest as the Madrid players celebrate with their fans. There's so many tears in the Bilbao side, hard not to feel for them. Predictably, Radamel Falcao is man of the match.

  17.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 Live

"You've got to give full credit to Birmingham to get back into the game, but over the two legs I think Blackpool deserve to be in the final."

  18. 2143:

All over at St Andrew's, and it is play-off experts Blackpool who hold on to book a meeting with West Ham on 19 May. It was gallant of Birmingham to make a fight of it, but in the end, it was too far to come back.

  19.
    FULL-TIME- Birmingham 2-2 Blackpool (agg 2-3)
  20. 2140:

Cross from the Birmingham left, but N'Daw's header goes high and wide. You feel that's probably their last chance.

  21. 2140:

Deep in stoppage time at St Andrew's, but Birmingham can't find a way past the Blackpool defence.

  22.

Ed Gutteridge on Twitter: "Just look how much both sides here care about the Europa League. Putting the top English clubs to shame."

  23. 2139:

As ever in a final, contrasting emotions in Bucharest. Elation for Madrid, but Bilbao are gutted. The final didn't quite turn out to the contest we hoped, but in all honesty, Madrid were brilliant.

  24.
CHAMPAGNE MOMENT- Atletico Madrid win the Europa League
  25.
FULL-TIME- Atletico Madrid 3-0 Athletic Bilbao
  26. 2137:

Five minutes of added time at St Andrew's. Amazing the contrast of emotions the fans must feel. For Blackpool, you would feel like a kid on Christmas Eve, for Birmingham, those seconds will be disappearing quicker than you know it.

  27. 2133:

Chris Hughton urges his Birmingham team forward, they've got two minutes to keep their Premier League dream alive. Blackpool standing firm though.

  28.

Capital R on Twitter: "I feel sorry for Bilbao. They have played some fantastic, entertaining football on route to the final."

  29. 2132:

Just a thought, but the last two Englishmen to reach the Uefa Cup/Europa League final have ended up as England manager. Steve McClaren and Roy Hodgson.

  30.
GOAL- Atletico Madrid 3-0 Athletic Bilbao - Diego (85 mins)

That's the ball game. Diego picks the ball up midway through the Bilbao half and runs at the defence. A stepover does for Fernando Amorebieta, and the left-foot finish nestles in the far corner. The whole Madrid teams celebrates in the corner, with Bilbao's Iker Muniain in tears of despair. That's what it means to these Spanish sides.

  31. 2128:

Of course I'm neutral, but I'd quite fancy another half-hour of this Birmingham-Blackpool tie. Gotta love play-off drama.

  32.

Lwanda on Twitter: "Hmm, Bilbao going long now. Tony Pulis is smiling somewhere!"

  33.

George Spencer on Twitter: "I'm two miles from St Andrew's, but I can hear the Birmingham fans as if they're right outside my window. So loud!"

  34.
    HITS THE WOODWORK

Nearly a hat-trick for Radamel Falcao, and he would deserve it. He cuts in from the Madrid left, but his right-foot shot comes off the near post. At times, they have needed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to be at his best, but Madrid have bossed this final. Falcao will have no shortage of attention this summer, me thinks.

  35.
BBC Sport's Ged Scott at St Andrew's

"'Keep right on to the end of the road' ringing around soaking wet St Andrew's! Blackpool looking like they might buckle!"

  36. 2122:

This is as close as Bilbao have come all night. Markel Susaeta lashes a left-foot shot from outside the box, it takes a deflection, and flies just wide of the right-hand post. Where they were once flatlining, we have signs of life in both of our matches.

  37. 2120:

Some youth football news where Chelsea have beaten Blackburn 4-1 on aggregate in the FA Youth Cup. The Blues lost 1-0 on the night but were comfortable winners over the two-legged final.

  38.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 live

Birmingham have been a threat all night from set-plays. Curtis Davies has got up in the six-yard box, he's been brave to get there. Blackpool are under serious pressure now, with the crowd right behind Birmingham.

  39.
GOAL- Birmingham 2-2 Blackpool (agg 2-3) - Curtis Davies (73 mins)

Oh my, we really have a game on now. A Birmingham corner from the left is met by the head of Curtis Davies, the man whose own goal gave Blackpool their slender first-leg lead. The ball flies past Matt Gilks, and Blues are firmly back in this tie. St Andrew's is rocking, Blackpool are reeling, and there's only one in it.

  40. 2117:

Bilbao are throwing men forward in increasing numbers. A cross from out on the right narrowly clears the poised Fernando Llorente before Ibai Gomez smashes a volley over from the edge of the box as the ball drops invitingly for him.

  41. 2116:

The goal has really lifted St Andrew's though, and there's some sustained Birmingham pressure. Nathan Redmond's run down the left finds Marlon King in the six-yard box, but, somehow, Matt Gilks keeps the ball out from point-blank range. Big moment.

  42. 2114:

I'm going to question the wisdom of some Birmingham fans here. Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks has objects thrown at him in protest at the time he is taking over a goal-kick, but that wastes more time. Curious.

  43.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 live

"All too often Birmingham have gone very, very long and haven't been able to break through the Blackpool defence. But there was some nice passes leading up to that and they've got to construct some real attacks to get back into this."

  44.
GOAL- Birmingham 1-2 Blackpool (agg 1-3) - Nikola Zigic (64 mins)

Right then, is this game back on? Chris Burke's clever pass splits the Blackpool defence and finds Nikola Zigic. He might be just offside, but there is no flag and he calmly slots past Matt Gilks. Blues have a lifeline.

  45. 2108:

Bilbao make their final change, Ander Herrera comes off to be replaced by Gaizka Toquero. Madrid respond through Adrian Lopez's effort, which flashes across the goal.

  46. 2105:

Blackpool are oozing confidence now, almost passing the Birmingham defence to a standstill, but Tom Ince just can't keep the ball in. In Bucharest, Bilbao are pressing, but the Madrid defence is holding firm. In addition, Chelsea loanee goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is very solid.

  47.

Paul Bennion on Twitter: "You have to take your hat off to Holloway. He knows how to prepare for games like this."

Dave Lindskog on Twitter: "Imagine Wigan, Swansea and Blackpool in the Premier League next season playing their attacking brand of football!"

  48. 2101:

That Blackpool goal seems to have killed the tie, and Bilbao aren't showing any signs of fighting back in Bucharest. Are both of our contests already over?

  49.

Oliver Rhodes on Twitter: "Bielsa's renowned tactical nous couldn't be more crucial. Bilbao simply licking their wounds. Need change in game plan."

  50.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 live

"Matt Phillips doesn't want to just stay wide, he wants to get involved. He makes a great run behind Angel and finishes well. I can't see Birmingham getting back into this now, more or less game over."

  51.
GOAL- Birmingham 0-2 Blackpool (agg 0-3) - Matt Phillips (48 mins)

Surely that's Blackpool booking the coach, tickets and suits for Wembley. The ball comes over the defence from the left, to be gathered by Matt Phillips. He controls, turns and shoots across Blues keeper Colin Doyle, finding the net via the far post. The play-off experts are at it again.

  52. 2052:

Those changes seem to have perked up Bilbao. Iker Muniain's dangerous low cross is only just cut out by the covering Atletico defence before Javi Martinez heads over from the subsequent corner.

  53.
    KICK-OFF

    And in Birmingham....

  54.
    KICK-OFF

Bilbao have made two changes, Jon Aurtenetxe and Ander Iturraspe have gone off to be replaced by Inigo Perez and Ibai Gomex. We've started again in Bucharest.

  55.

Stevie Luff on Twitter: "Bilbao are definitely not out of this, Llorente, Munain & De Marcos are always dangerous! 2-2 at 90mins."

  56. 2041:

Just a bit more on that amazing Blackpool play-off winning streak. They won promotion in 2001, 2007 and 2010, from the bottom tier up to the Premier League, all via the play-offs. They are the only club to go from the bottom to the top flight exclusively through the play-offs.

  57.
    Atletico Madrid 2-0 Athletic Bilbao

Mike Henson reports: "Atletico Madrid have kept the Basques in check in Bucharest with Falcao punisher-in-chief with two expertly taken chances. Little sign of Bilbao's retaliation as yet."

  58.

John Murray on Twitter: "Madrid are going to have a fight on their hands to keep both Diego and Falcao - both are absolutely quality."

  59.

Matthew Catterall on Twitter: "Is it just me or does anyone else think Bilbao just haven't turned up on the most important night of their season?"

  60.
    Birmingham 0-1 Blackpool (agg 0-2)

Mandeep Sanghera reports: "You can't take your eyes off this one and Blackpool deservedly added to their first leg 1-0 lead. Birmingham are struggling to work keeper Matt Gilks and they are going to have to improve if they are to mount a comeback."

  61. 2036:

It's tough to overestimate the magnitude of the Blackpool strike, but at least Birmingham have the saving grace that the away goal does not count double. Nevertheless, Blackpool's amazing run in play-off football - they've won their last 10 play-off matches in all divisions - looks set to continue.

  62.
    HALF-TIME- Birmingham 0-1 Blackpool (agg 0-2)
  63.
HALF-TIME- Atletico Madrid 2-0 Athletic Bilbao
  64.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on BBC Radio 5 live

"How did that get in, I can't understand it? Colin Doyle will be desperately disappointed. Bad, bad goalkeeping, he shouldn't be letting that in at his near post."

  65.
GOAL- Birmingham 0-1 Blackpool (agg 0-2) - Stephen Dobbie (45 mins)

Massive, absolutely massive. From a corner, the ball gets to Alex Baptiste at the back post. His overhead kick hits Curtis Davies, with the ball falling to Stephen Dobbie, whose effort squirms under Colin Doyle and into the net. Blackpool, again, could be on their way to Wembley.

  66.

Ali Horne on Twitter: "Atletico seem to find/produce some class strikers. Aguero, Torres, Falcao..."

Pedro on Twitter: "Deary me, there is nobody like Falcao in the Premier League right now. Nobody. He is a force to be reckoned with."

Chris Palmer on Twitter: "Falcao to Man City. Calling it now, this will happen."

  67. 2027:

The Falcao show in Bucharest has rather overshadowed events at St Andrew's, but it's entertaining stuff in the Midlands. Blackpool's default setting it to attack, while Birmingham know they have to score. As if to illustrate my point, Marlon King hits the post for Blues, but the flag is up.

  68.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 live

Birmingham are looking for Marlon King and Nikola Zigic very early on, there's not much inter-play. Blackpool are getting it down, trying to involve Barry Ferguson in the middle of the park. It's an enthralling game to watch because of the contrasting styles.

  69.
GOAL- Atletico Madrid 2-0 Athletic Bilbao - Radamel Falcao (34 mins)

You were warned to watch him, and Radamel Falcao has grabbed this Europa League final by the scruff of the neck. Bilbao give the ball away on the edge of their own box, Diego feeds Colombian Falcao, whose Cruyff turn takes three defenders out of the game. His left-foot finish was academic. Do Madrid have one hand on the trophy already?

  70.

Dibs in Bebington, on 81111: "Re: 2007, Would a funky undertaker be a fundertaker?"

  71.

Jonny Barrett on Twitter: "Re: 2007, Why would Falcao want to go to United. Atletico Madrid are participating in a final United couldn't reach."

  72. 2016:

Some pinball in the Blackpool box comes to an end before Nikola Zigic completely wipes out Stephen Crainey. The big Serbian gets a yellow card for his trouble.

  73.

Ray Drewett on Twitter: "Re: 2004, Is it jam, peanut butter or dry toast? I can't see them having butter-laden toast pre-match."

  74. 2012:

Iker Muniain warms the palms of Thibaut Courtois with a meaty effort from 30 yards, but the Madrid goalkeeper is down to it. Keep an eye on Courtois, the Belgian is only 19 and on loan from Chelsea.

  75. 2011:

It's that man Tom Ince (son of Paul, in case you were wondering) again causing trouble at St Andrew's. He finds space on the Blackpool right, floats in a left-footed cross that is met by Gary Taylor-Fletcher, but the header doesn't even work the goalkeeper.

  76.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 live

"Birmingham are attacking as a five and defending as a five. Jonathan Spector's not really coming forward at all, but that allows Jordon Mutch to push forward and join the attack. They're very rigid in that approach."

  77.

Tim Creak on Twitter: "Falcao scored the winning goal for Porto in the cup final last season. Will it be a repeat with Athletico Madrid this time?"

  78. 2007:

Bilbao are growing into the game. Fernando Llorente, whose superb volley opened the scoring in the second leg of their last-16 clash with Manchester United, slashes a little too eagerly at a similar chance after latching on to a floated throughball.

  79. 2007:

Ian Holloway is off his bench barking the orders at St Andrews - he looks sharp his dark pea coat and orange tie. Like a funky undertaker.

  80.

Dahood Ola on Twitter: "If by any chance Alex Ferguson is seeing this!.....PLEASE bring Falcao to Old Trafford next season!"

  81. 2004:

Bilbao have re-grouped after going behind. Team spirit you see - their pre-match ritual is to get together the night before a game, drink cocoa and eat toast. Don Revie would be proud.

  82. 2001:

This isn't a surprise, but I'll mention it anyway: it's hammering down in Birmingham.

  83. 2000:
    HITS THE WOODWORK

You feel there's goals in the game at St Andrew's. Birmingham striker Marlon King meets a deep cross at the back post with his right foot, but his controlled effort comes off the top of the crossbar. I think we're in for some night.

  84. 1959:

In Bucharest, Fernando Llorente directs a header well off target from a decent position, but he has an excuse. The Bilbao striker is appealing for a penalty, but referee Wolfgang Stark does not see enough in Diego Godin's tug on his collar to justify a spot-kick.

  85. 1959:

Birmingham have had some decent pressure, but only now have they created a good opening. From a corner, Chris Burke gets the ball outside the box and aims a curling shot, but can only watch as it drifts wide of the far post.

  86.
Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane on Radio 5 live

"That looked like a penalty to me. David Murphy was all over Thomas Ince as he cut inside."

  87. 1956:

Tom Ince is causing trouble again. This time he gets inside Birmingham left-back David Murphy as he latches on to a long pass forward and, with just keeper Colin Doyle to beat from a tight angle, the Blackpool winger goes down appealing for a penalty. Referee Chris Foy says no but there was contact and Blackpool will feel aggrieved.

  88.
GOAL- Atletico Madrid 1-0 Athletic Bilbao - Radamel Falcao (7 mins)

This is what the Europa League has been all about this season. Radamel Falcao gets the ball on the right of the Bilbao area, he waits, hoodwinks defender Fernando Amorebieta with a stepover, then curls a left-footed shot into the far corner. It's awesome, it really is. That's his 11th of the tournament, making him the top-scorer.

  89. 1951:

Good work from Tom Ince down the Blackpool right. He skips past David Murphy and gets a low left-footed shot away, but Birmingham keeper Colin Doyle is able to make the low save.

  90. 1950:

Birmingham nicely link our two games this evening, after all, a Europa League campaign has contributed to the fact this is their 62nd game of the season. They've started well, but it looks likely to open at St Andrew's.

  91.
Kevin Kilbane on BBC Radio 5 live

"Birmingham will sit-back, they don't like to be broken down too easily. Blackpool will be very open, they'll let Birmingham have a lot of possession and try and hit them on the break. And with the firepower they have in their side and on their bench, I can't see Blackpool not scoring tonight."

  92. 1946:
    KICK-OFF

We're under way in both Birmingham and Bucharest.

  93. 1944:

As some have you pointed out, to avoid confusion I will be referring to the Spanish teams as Madrid and Bilbao respectively this evening. To make matters worse, both usually play in red and white stripes, but Bilbao have changed to green this evening.

  94.

Daniel Jamieson on Twitter: "Victoria Anichebe? Taribo Westminster? Sulley Monumentari?"

  95.

James in Exeter, on 81111: "Zat Knightsbridge?"

  96. 1942:

It really is some spectacle in Bucharest. As the players wait in the tunnel, a troupe of dancers parade around a huge Europa League banner than covers the centre circle. A great atmosphere, and a great reward for both teams and their fans. The players are on their way out in both games, not long now.

  97.

Chris Hutton on Twitter: "Robbie Earle's Court"

Philip Cotton on Twitter: "Stern Johns Wood"

Paul Cernicharo on Twitter: "Bristol Ji-Sung Park-Way... that one took me a fair amount of time!"

  98.

Mark in Stockport, on 81111: "Re: 1926, Ian Holloway Road?"

  99. 1935:

Just in case you need a reminder, we could have extra-time and penalties in both games this evening. In the play-off game, it's worth keeping in mind that away goals do not count double. So if the tie is level, no matter what the score, we could have another 30 minutes and, if needs be, spot-kicks.

  100.
Atletico Madrid v Athletic Bilbao (1945 BST)

Mike Henson reports: Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone played in the Uefa Cup final as a player with Lazio in 1993 and admits that he would prefer to be on the field rather than in the dug-out. "As a coach, it's a bit strange. It's better to experience it as a player. When the match starts, players can play, run and forget all the pre-match stress," he said. Compatriot Marcelo Bielsa has called for effort to match the aesthetics from Athletic. "When you're going into a match in which the result is irreversible a lot of the same feelings come to the surface - desire, ambition, anxiety - but the main thing is to give as much as we can against our opponents," he said.

  101.
    Birmingham v Blackpool (1945 BST)

Mandeep Sanghera reports: Birmingham boss Chris Hughton is hoping the St Andrew's crowd can inspire his team to overturn their 1-0 deficit. "We're at home, we'll have a full house and it can be a fairly daunting place to come and play for an opposition," said Hughton. "We've got to make sure that's the case." Blackpool boss Ian Holloway is putting his belief in the defensive qualities his side have recently shown. "We probably didn't do that enough early in the season, but I thought my two centre-halves and two full-backs were absolutely outstanding [in the first leg]."

  102. 1926:

If that wasn't enough, both Llorente and Falcao have had metro stations in Bucharest temporarily named after them for the final. That's got me thinking about which footballers could lend their names to transport stops in England. Jamie Clapham Junction? Brett Angel? Matt Holland Park? And my favourite, Marble Stephan Guivarch.

  103. 1924:

If you've not been following the Europa League, let me advise you to keep an eye on a couple of strikers, one on each side. Fernando Llorente has netted seven times for Bilbao in the competition this season, while Madrid's Radamel Falcao has got 10 - that's on the back of a record 17 goals for Porto last season, leaving him in line to become the first man to win back-to-back Uefa Cups/Europa Leagues with two different teams.

  104.

Dave Gillet on Twitter: "Whoever wins tonight is going to have a tough time beating West Ham, they're playing really well, hit form just at the right time."

  105.
Atletico Madrid v Athletic Bilbao (1945 BST)

Mike Henson reports: "Madrid make one chance from the team that beat Valencia in the second leg of the semi-final with Tiago Mendes dropping out and anchorman Gabi restored to the starting XI. Chelsea's on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is between the posts. Spain international Fernando Llorente leads the Bilbao attack, Oscar de Marcos is back on the left flank, with talented playmakers Ander Herrera and Iker Munian also starting."

  106.

Atletico Madrid: Courtois, Juanfran, Godin, Miranda, Filipe Luis, Mario Suarez, Gabi, Diego, Adrian, Turan, Falcao. Subs: Sergio Asenjo, Antonio Lopez, Salvio, Paulo Assuncao, Koke, Dominguez, Martin.

Athletic Bilbao: Iraizoz, Iraola, Javi Martinez, Amorebieta, Aurtenetxe, Ander Herrera, Iturraspe, De Marcos, Susaeta, Llorente, Muniain. Subs: Raul, Toquero, San Jose, Gabilondo, Inigo Perez, Ekiza, Ibai.

    Referee: Wolfgang Stark (Germany)

  107.
    Birmingham v Blackpool (1945 BST)

Mandeep Sanghera reports: "Birmingham make three changes from the side which lost the first leg. Jonathan Spector and Andros Townsend come into midfield while Nikola Zigic starts up front as the trio replace the benched Guirane N'Daw, Wade Elliott and Nathan Redmond. Blackpool name an unchanged side with centre-back Ian Evatt fit to start, despite taking a hit to his broken nose in the first leg."

  108.
    Birmingham v Blackpool (1945 BST)

Birmingham: Doyle, Ramage, Davies, Ibanez, Murphy, Burke, Spector, Mutch, Townsend, King, Zigic. Subs: Butland, N'Daw, Elliott, Rooney, Redmond.

Blackpool: Gilks, Eardley, Baptiste, Evatt, Crainey, Matt Phillips, Ferguson, Angel, Ince, Dobbie, Taylor-Fletcher. Subs: Halstead, Southern, Kevin Phillips, Cathcart, Dicko.

    Referee: Chris Foy (Merseyside)

  109.
Atletico Madrid v Athletic Bilbao (1945 BST)

Mike Henson reports: "Atletico and Athletic have spent their Thursday evenings this season proving to the rest of Europe that there is more to La Liga than Real and Barca's axis of excellence. Under shrewd Argentine football anorak Marcelo Bielsa, Bilbao's all-Basque side have defied Manchester United and Schalke's multinational operations with captivating gung-ho football. Victory tonight would land their first European trophy. Atletico have made their way through the draw in lower-key fashion, but are five places clear of their opponents and have the experience of winning the competition in 2010 to their advantage."

  110.
    Birmingham v Blackpool (1945 BST)

Mandeep Sanghera reports: "The Championship play-off final is supposed to be the most lucrative game in football with a place in the cash-rich Premier League on offer. Whoever prevails out of the play-off semi-final between Birmingham and Blackpool tonight will face West Ham at Wembley to move a step closer to that prize of a return to the top flight and their tie could not be more tantalisingly poised. It's 1-0 to Blackpool but the Blues have home advantage. Birmingham have won 13 of their 23 league home matches this season and lost only once. Blackpool are unbeaten in their last eight. Game on.

  111. 1910:

Inevitably at this stage of the evening we are presented with more questions than answers, but answers are what I demand. Think you can help me? 112. 1907:

And let's not forget the small matter of the Europa League final taking place in Bucharest. While English clubs treat Europe's second competition as little more than an excuse to pop on to the continent to pick up some decent cheese and wine, Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao have been lighting up our Thursday nights. I'm telling you now, this one will be a belter.

  113. 1903:

Romantics and Ian Holloway fans (which is pretty much everyone except Plymouth supporters, right?) must be backing Blackpool for a return to the top flight, but you can't deny the intrigue that a Birmingham-West Ham final would throw up. Hammers owners Gold and Sullivan coming up against their former club - the preview would write itself.

  114. 1900:

Let's be honest, unless it's your team just missing out on promotion, the play-offs are ruddy brilliant. While West Ham's efficiency sucked the drama out their comfortable win over Cardiff, you always got the feeling that the Birmingham-Blackpool tie was where the excitement would come. The Seasiders hold a slender lead after an entertaining first leg, so, just as The Dark Knight was even better than Batman Begins, let's hope this sequel builds on the good work of the original.
