Charlie Daniels ensured Bournemouth ended the season with a cheer after victory over Preston.
After a dour first half, Luke Clark fouled Donal McDermott inside the area shortly after the break, allowing Daniels to stroke home from the spot.
After being played through against North End keeper Andreas Arestidou, Wes Thomas slipped and wasted a gilt-edged chance to double the advantage.
Defeat means that the visitors have won just three times under Graham Westley.
Bournemouth caretaker boss Paul Groves told BBC Radio Solent:
"We've allowed to teams to get themselves back in it but today we've worked extremely hard and shut them out and they've not had too many opportunities throughout.
On Steve Fletcher, Groves added: "He's somebody that has served this football club very, very well over his period here. He' somebody that loves the football club but he's been a factor as well, he's scored goals and saved goals. In both boxes he's extremely effective."
Paul Groves on his future: "It's been a hectic few weeks so I think over the course of the next week-to-10 days everybody will sit down and reflect and the board will make a decision.
"There are lots of areas that needs to be addressed but if they are then I'm sure this football club is more than capable. With the backing that the owners are prepared to give this football club can make strides to go forwards."
