As it happened

  1. 2230:

Two Groups done, two still to go. Tomorrow, I'll be back in the seat to guide you through the conclusion of Group C. The Republic of Ireland's interest in the quarter-finals is already over, leaving Italy (who face Giovanni Trappatoni's side), Spain and Croatia to battle it out for the two qualification spots. One of the two that progress would provide the opponent for England, should they make it to the last eight.

In the meantime, you can watch highlights and read reports and reaction to tonight's games on this very website and watch highlights of both games on Match of the Day on BBC One from 22:55 BST. I'll see thee.

  2.

Greg Ukuta ‏ "Ronaldo showed class and why he deserves to win balon, this year. Glad Portugal are through to the quarter finals."

Mohamed Toorani "Goodnight Euro. It was short and depressing! Van Marwijk sacked in the morning!"

  3.
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer

"Germany looking ominously good. Again. A side laced with real quality. And Cristiano Ronaldo delivers. Good to see great players gracing major tournaments - and whether you like him or not he is a great player."

  4. 2225:

Germany coach Joachim Loew, whose team qualified top of Group B courtesy of a 2-1 win over Denmark: "There is a certain maturing process that has happened so far in this tournament. We were not quite so good with the overall organisation. The team has gone through a good development process."

Germany captain Philipp Lahm: "Every match in this group was difficult. But when you get three wins in three matches then you have marched through the group."

  5. 2221:

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk on his side's exit from Euro 2012 following the 2-1 defeat to Portugal: "I think we started quite well today and we scored after about 10 minutes, but you saw that when we concede a goal, the uncertainty remains.

"If we'd scored a second, we might have been more sure of ourselves, but we didn't take our chances."

  6.

Uwais Ashraf on Twitter: "Germany have to be the "Favourites" to win Euro 2012. But there is always Spain."

Barry Ameobi on Twitter: "It would appear the Netherlands took the group of death literally and were utterly lifeless throughout their whole campaign."

  7. 2218:

Denmark will leave Euro 2012 with their heads held high. They were the designated whipping boys in Group B, but beat one of the tournament favourites, came close to claiming a point against Portugal and certainly did not disgrace themselves in defeat by the Germans.

Nicklas Bendtner will come away with his reputation enhanced (and possibly open arms from Arsenal) as will fellow striker Michael Krohn-Dehli and defenders Daniel Agger, Simon Kjaer and Simon Poulsen.

  8.

Ben, via text: "I can't quite understand this consensus that Van Persie has failed miserably. Ronaldo has squandered more clear-cut chances in this tournament and only scored one more goal in a team whose sole tactic is 'get the ball to Ronaldo.' Ronaldo had 10 shots today alone! Seems that Van Persie's been a victim of his own reputation, Ronaldo the beneficiary of his."

Des, via text: "Ronaldo has just delivered a performance that tells me he's made space on his mantlepiece for another World Player of the Year award. Move over Messi...Ronnie is ready to retake his throne! Simply stunning, sublime, performance!!!"

  9. 2213:

Portugal midfielder Miguel Velso: "Once again we showed how united we are as a team. It wasn't easy to start with a defeat. The secret was our defending, our humility."

  10.

Richard, via text: "Netherlands deserved to lose but the inclusion of Hunterlaar has destroyed the Dutch structure. He never showed and made Van Persie play on the wing."

  11.

Infostrada Sports on Twitter: "Germany won their 14th successive competitive match. This is currently the longest run of all European countries."

  12. 2210:

Lars Bender was making his very first start for Germany. It's not a bad way to cap that, scoring the winner. He was also playing out of position as a full-back. By trade he is a midfielder.

Another man making a significant appearance and crowning it with a goal was Arsenal-bound Germany striker Lukas Podolski, who scored his 44th goal in his 100th international appearance.

"It was something special for me that I got a goal in my 100th match," Podolski told German televsion. "The most important thing is that we won. It was a tough match against a strong Denmark team and fortunately we got the second goal and won it.

"We had three matches and three wins and now we'll prepare for [a quarter-final against] Greece."

  13. 2206:

Germany's Lars Bender, who scored the winner against Denmark: "It is something special for me. It's a wonderful present to come in top in this group.

"There were positive spirits out there tonight. We were focused on getting a goal. It was a bit of luck that the ball came to me but you don't think a lot about it, you just shoot it in."

  14.

Koya Olufemi on Twitter: "Where was Arjen Robben? Was he still sulking on how he made Bayern Munich lose in three competitions. I don't think he got over it."

Tarl Smith on Twitter: "All the focus on the Dutch but credit to the Danes, fought bravely and surprised a few!"

Akinpelu Kayode on Twitter: "Denmark (Krohn Delhi and Bendtner especially) MUST get a honourable mention, better than the orange boys. They depart with pride."

  15. 2200:

We've now got two confirmed quarter-finals. As Group B winners, Germany go forward to play Greece, with Portugal taking on Group A table-toppers the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic v Portugal match is in Warsaw on Thursday 21 June. Germany will play Greece in Gdansk a day later.

  16.

Ben Ainger on Twitter: "I don't think I've seen such a poor tournament performance from one of the favourites since France in 2002."

Ben Barton on Twitter: "There's no way that the excitement of this year's Euro's could be replicated under a 24-team format."

Phillip Davis on Twitter: "That sums up Holland's Euro 2012 campaign, all about the missed chances and they've paid for it by failing to pass the group stage."

  17.

Isaac, via text: "On chance conversion rate, Bendtner has thrashed Ronaldo. Best striker in the world? Not even the best in Group B apparently."

  18. 2153:

The Group B table finishes like this...

Germany top the group with nine points and a goal difference of +3. Portugal are second with six points and a +1 goal difference. Denmark are third with three points (-1 goal difference) while the Netherlands are rock bottom with zero points and a goal difference two worse than the Danes.

    Hands up who predicted that?

  19.

Shohidur Rahman on Twitter: "4-1 would've been a more fairer scoreline. Holland were awful. Ronaldo was sensational. Portugal and Germany are in the semis."

James Gilchrist on Twitter: "Bad day for Holland football today, both the men and women lost today."

Si's insights on Twitter: "Honourable mention to Denmark, who battled gamely in a tough group. They can go home with pride and dignity intact."

  20. 2150:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"The Dutch will be really disappointed with their display in the tournament whereas the Danes won't be. They knew it would be a tough group and no-one expected them to get a win against the Dutch. When you win your first game it's disappointing not to qualify. It just wasn't to be for the Danes."

  21. 2150:

It would appear the Netherlands took the group of death literally and were utterly lifeless throughout their whole campaign. Arguably, Wesley Sneijder was their only decent performer. Robin van Persie scored one great goal but his wasteful displays against the Danish (in particular) and the Portuguese will be what everyone remembers. He perhaps suffered for having run himself into the ground for Arsenal this season. And where was Arjen Robben?

  22. 2145:

The right teams have gone through tonight. Germany have been the best side in the group, reflected by a 100% haul of nine points. They look typically efficiently ruthless. Portugal haven't shown as much consistency and started slowly, but they have joined the party in a big way now, largely thanks to their talismanic pin-up boy Cristiano Ronaldo, who was simply world class tonight.

Denmark peaked in the first game with their spirited victory over the Dutch, but their lack of quality means they have just fallen short. The star-studded Netherlands, one of the pre-tournament favourites, were, quite simply, dreadful - the sum total of a host of underperforming parts.

  23.

Vaughan McKee on Twitter: "Oh Ronaldo, you just keep getting better and better."

Akinpelu Kayode on Twitter: "Messi must be thinking the Euros is a much easier proposition than the Copa America with Ronaldo's performance tonight."

The Boss on Twitter: "Who would have thought that Holland would be knocked out without even a point before England? That's what the Beautiful Game is."

  24. 2137:
    BREAKING NEWS

Netherlands and Denmark eliminated from Euro 2012. Germany and Portugal advance to the quarter-finals.

  25. 2137:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"Portugal have been the better team by a mile. Very, very disappointed by Holland but don't take any credit from Portugal and Ronaldo in particular. You could almost say Ronaldo 2 Holland 1."

  26. 2136:
    FULL-TIME- Portugal 2-1 Netherlands
  27. 2135:
    FULL-TIME- Denmark 1-2 Germany
  28. 2135:

We're deep into injury time now. The Netherlands are limping out of Euro 2012 without a point and just two goals to their name. Denmark have shown great spirit, but ultimately it is not going to be enough.

  29. 2133:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"I am pleased I am at this game, why? Because I have seen Ronaldo play. Whenever this fella has had the ball he has threatened danger on the Dutch goal. What has amazed me is that the Dutch have hardly picked him up. They have let him have the space he wants."

  30. 2133:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"The Dutch will be really disappointed with their display in the tournament whereas the Danes won't be. They knew it would be a tough group and no-one expected them to get a win against the Dutch. When you win your first game it's disappointing not to qualify. It just wasn't to be for the Danes."

  31. 2131:
    HITS THE WOODWORK

Cristiano Ronaldo could have had at least a hat-trick tonight. He almost rubs a big fat handful of salt into Dutch wounds as he cuts inside and shoots with his left foot from 25 yards, but his effort strikes the base of the post. Worryingly, for Portugal's quarter-final opponents (which looks like being the Czech Republic) the Real Madrid man has hit form with a vengeance.

  32. 2130:

Robin van Persie sums up the Dutch at this tournament. He has been so prolific for Arsenal in the last year but when put through on goal by Wesley Sneijder he can only toe-poke his shot wide from 15 yards.

  33. 2129:
    EURO STATS

Netherlands' Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has had one shot on goal all match. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has had 11 shots on goal.

  34.

Claud, via text: "Could someone please tell me why Van Persie has been told to play on the right of midfield? He is the Premier League and Dutch top scorer...and you play him on the right of midfield?"

  35. 2128:
SUBSTITUTION- Portugal - Rolando on for Nani
  36. 2128:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"More than any other team in this tournament Germany have the ability to go from one end to the other in the blink of an eye. It only took about five or six seconds. The ball fell to Bender who ran 80 yards to join that attack."

  37. 2128:

The Dutch are all over the place. Nani floats a cross just too long for Cristiano Ronaldo at the back post before firing over from distance. Bert van Marwijk's side are mentally shot. They are going out. Denmark continue to battle, but it is not looking good for them. Germany and Portugal have a hold on Group B.

  38. 2126:
    HITS THE WOODWORK

The Netherlands need three goals now to go through (which lets face it, isn't going to happen with eight minutes left). They go so close to one of those, though, as Rafael van der Vaart curls a superb shot from 25 yards that beats Rui Patricio, but not the far post, which it crashes off and away from danger. Meanwhile, in Lviv, Daniel Agger rises to meet a corner for Denmark, but heads over the bar.

  39. 2124:
BBC Sport's Martin Keown on Denmark v Germany:

"It almost seemed to happen in slow motion. Bender must have run 30 or 40 yards to get on the end of that. In the end it was just a side-foot into the goal. He has broken Danish hearts. "

  40. 2121:
GOAL- Denmark 1-2 Germany (Lars Bender, 80 mins)

Group B is finally starting to take shape. Germany go ahead again as Lars Bender runs from deep and into the box and gets ahead of a desperate last-ditch challenge from a Danish defender to finish past Stephan Andersen. Could that be the end for Denmark as well now?

  41.

Stuart Allan on Twitter: "Nani take note. That is how to score a goal - so much composure from Ronaldo who has been the best player by miles tonight."

Dahood Olayode on Twitter: "Cristiano Ronaldo proving all doubters wrong there! Superb finish!"

Danny Gary Kysh on Twitter: "Brilliant by Ronaldo. Player of the year, ahead of Messi. Also, should Danes grab a goal, Germany could go out! Another shocker?"

  42.

Mich, via text: "Funny how Nani misses an absolute sitter but 30 seconds later plays a peach of a pass for the second goal."

  43. 2120:

Denmark have a big shout for a penalty. It is a good one as well. Nicklas Bendtner is dragged down in the box by Holger Badstuber as he looks to latch on to the ball, but the referee gives nothing, to the Danish striker's utter disgust.

  44. 2119:

As things stand, one goal for Denmark puts Germany out. Are we going to have another table-topping favourite before kick-off suffering a shock exit?

  45. 2117:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"The back three was pulled all over the place. Once it came to Ronaldo, he had the confidence to stop it, step inside the defender, he looked where the goalkeeper was and put it inside the goal. That has been coming. Holland are a defeated side but Portugal have deserved to win this game."

  46. 2114:
GOAL- Portugal (Cristiano Ronaldo, 74 mins) 2-1 Netherlands

Thank you and goodnight for the Dutch. There is a tubby songstress warming up. It was never going to be anyone else but Cristiano Ronaldo. He has answered all his critics tonight with a superb display and he lands what is likely to be the knockout blow to the Netherlands. Nani finds his team-mate with a neat pass into the box and the Real Madrid player does the rest, cutting inside and firing low past Maarten Stekelenburg.

  47. 2114:

How are Portugal not ahead?! Cristiano Ronaldo latches on to a ball on the right and cuts into the box before laying on the perfect cross for Nani, who is about eight yards out and with the goal at his mercy, but puts his shot to close to Maarten Stekelenburg, who produces a great save.

  48. 2112:
SUBSTITUTION- Portugal - Custodio on for Raul Meireles
  49. 2112:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"Germany played it ever so well for Schurrle's chance. They were patient for a long time and eventually worked the opening. It was a tight angle, tried to bend it and it was a good save from the goalkeeper."

  50. 2112:

20 minutes to go. It is all on the Danes and the Dutch to change things. They are both going out unless they can score (twice in the Netherlands' case). The Danes have a go, with Niki Zimling's shot from 30 yards but Manuel Neuer clumsily tips it behind. The corner comes to nothing.

  51. 2110:

Germany threaten. A strike across goal from Andre Schurrle from an angle on the left inside the box draws a superb save from Danish keeper Stephan Andersen, who pushes the ball away with a strong hand.

  52. 2108:
SUBSTITUTION- Netherlands - Ibrahim Affelay on for Jetro Willems
  53. 2108:

Robin van Persie has been quiet. Very quiet. But he has his first real sight of goal 65 minutes into the game. His effort from range is blocked by a Portuguese defender, though. In a flash, Portugal break with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the charge. He passes the ball into the box for Fabio Coentrao and he cuts inside a challenge before drawing a good diving save from Maarten Stekelenburg. It remains 1-1.

  54.

Emmanuel Amanor on Twitter: "Bendtner has been superb in this tournament. I hope Arsenal are watching."

Stuart Allan on Twitter: "You know the Dutch have been poor when the best thing about them tonight is their strip."

Liam Sharpe on Twitter: "Ronaldo's feet are that quick, not even his team-mates know when or where the ball is about to be played. Mesmerising to watch."

  55. 2105:
SUBSTITUTION- Germany - Andre Schurrle on for Lukas Podolski
  56. 2105:
SUBSTITUTION- Portugal - Nelson Oliviera on for Helder Postiga
  57. 2105:

The onus is not on Portugal in Kharkiv but they continue to be the most positive side. The Netherlands have so much attacking talent but they cannot create anything at the moment against a very comfortable Portuguese side.

  58. 2103:

To remind you, as it stands Germany and Portugal are going through from this group.

  59. 2102:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"What Germany are doing now is almost going through the motions. Too many touches, too slow."

  60. 2102:
    DISALLOWED GOAL

The ball is in the net for Portugal. It is offside, though. Cristiano Ronaldo looks to hit on the turn but ends up sending over a cross straight to Helder Postiga, who turns the ball in. The flag is up, though. He was definitely offside. That is the first bit of action that has lifted the crowd in either game for a while. This group is just simmering at the moment. It only takes another goal in either game to bring it back to the boil, though.

  61. 2059:
BBC Sport's Martin Keown on Denmark v Germany:

"The Germans are starting to look a little bit ordinary. This is pretty much their starting line-up and they have played in all the games. I wonder what that effect it is having?"

  62.

Bill, via text: "Would love to see Nani leave the Premier League. Hate players who try and get other players sent off."

  63. 2058:

Now the Netherlands have an opportunity to create something. They have a free-kick wide on the left. Wesley Sneijder delivers and it is aimed at Nigel de Jong but he is unable to get enough contact on it to send the ball goalwards. Just over 30 minutes for the Dutch to alter the picture in Group B and save themselves.

  64. 2056:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"What a miss from Vlaar. I think it has gone on to his shoulder. It was a great opportunity but it loops over the bar, what a miss."

  65. 2056:
YELLOW CARD- Netherlands - Jetro Willems

Dutch left-back Jetro Willems has both feet off the ground as he dives into a tackle which leaves Joao Moutinho rolling around in agony. Portugal are furious but Willems only gets a yellow card, one which would rule him out in the unlikely event that Netherlands go through.

  66. 2055:

The Netherlands haven't created much but they have a great opening here. A cross from the left finds Ron Vlaar unmarked in the box, but he makes a hash of the header and connects with his shoulder instead. The ball goes harmlessly wide of goal.

  67. 2054:
    BBC football analyst Mark Lawrenson:

"Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is so weak and he just cannot keep hold of the ball."

  68.

Callum Ritchie on Twitter: "For most of the tournament Arjen Robben has lacked end product, tonight he lacks anything."

Salmaan Saddal ‏on Twitter: "Van Bommel needs to come on, Holland look like conceding goals. They've got the attackers to score goals."

  69. 2053:
    HITS THE WOODWORK

Germany with the first meaningful foray forward of the second half in Lviv. Philipp Lahm's chipped ball forward just skips ahead of Thomas Mueller in the box, though, and the chance goes. Denmark strike back with an even better chance as Nicklas Bendtner collects a low cross from the left and lays off for Jakob Poulsen but his shot clips the outside of the post. So close.

  70. 2050:

Portugal again on the attack, but Joao Pereira slices his shot from the edge of the area high and wide of goal.

  71. 2049:
BBC MOTD's Jonathan Pearce at Denmark v Germany:

"Germany had the chances in the first half but they didn't take them. We have been here before with the Danes. Against the Netherlands they were second best for long periods but with 45 minutes of the Group of Death left they are still in there."

  72. 2049:

The Netherlands start with a modicum of control courtesy of a period of possession, but it goes nowhere. Portugal have the first sight of goal as - guess who? - Cristiano Ronaldo collects a chipped ball from Nani in the box. His shot is blocked, though.

  73. 2045:
    KICK-OFF- Denmark v Germany & Portugal v Netherlands
  74. 2045:

You ready for the second half? Tough if not, because it is about to happen. Hard hats on.

  75.

Mo on Twitter: "The Dutch showing no signs of Total Football. They are being dominated here and are lacking balance in their side."

Tom Lane on Twitter: "So in that first half it was Portugal, then Denmark, then Portugal, then Denmark then Portugal going through."

Stuart Gunn Wiseman on Twitter: "Germany and Portugal have both had so many chances to put these games to bed but STILL anything can happen in this group!"

  76. 2042:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands

"With the way Holland started I thought this was the Holland we knew, but they have not been the same since Portugal equalised.

"They have Robben staying on the right not moving and Sneijder staying on the left not moving and that is not the Dutch way. Portugal have control of the game here and they are dominating it. If it was a fair reflection of play they should be leading.

"I am gobsmacked at seeing how Holland have reacted to Portugal's equaliser. Some of the players have given the impression they feel they are going home and that is not good at all. I am so disappointed with what I have seen since Portugal have equalised."

  77.

Ludo, via text: "Come on Denmark! We would love to see the underdogs win!"

  78. 2041:

Bizarrely, ITV are showing shots of a man outside the stadium in Kharkiv with a ferret on a lead. I believe that is one of the choruses Sandie Shaw rejected for her 1967 Eurovision entry.

  79. 2039:

At half-time, these are the latest standout statistics from the two Group B matches:

    Portugal 1-1 Netherlands

    Possession: 42%-58%

    Balls played: 190-317

    Shots: 12-7

    Denmark 1-1 Germany

    Possession: 41%-59%

    Balls played: 255-334

    Shots: 5-7

    (Prozone)

  80. 2036:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"It's a wonderful game of football. The favourites Germany are dominating possession but the underdogs gave as good as they got. The two Danish centre-halves, Simon Kjaer and Daniel Agger, have been standing tall. It's all to play for in the second half."

  81. 2036:

You can all draw breath now. Euro 2012 continues to stubbornly refuse to disappoint. We are not going to have our first goalless draw of the tournament today. However, we are no clearer to knowing who will be going through from Group B. As is stands, Germany (with seven points) are going through as group winners, with Portugal joining them. Paulo Bento's side are level with Denmark on four points but win the "mini-league" between them courtesy of their win over the Danes. The Netherlands, like an unruly customer in the Queen Vic, are going ahhhhht.

  82. 2032:
    BBC football analyst Mark Lawrenson:

"I think Bert van Marwijk has to look at the balance of his side. I know they have to win the game but the problem is that they are going to lose it if it carries on like this."

  83. 2031:
    HALF-TIME- Denmark 1-1 Germany
  84. 2030:
    HALF-TIME- Portugal 1-1 Netherlands
  85. 2030:

We're nearing half-time of what have been two frantic and fascinating Euro 2012 games.

  86.

OptaJoe on Twitter: "There have now been 25 first half goals in Euro 2012, as many as there were in the whole of Euro 2008."

  87. 2029:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"You cannot be making mistakes like that in the penalty area. Denmark defender Kvist just has to clear the ball."

  88.

Akinpelu Kayode on Twitter: "Ronaldo's performance so far has been immense. He's been the spine of his team's attack. Hope Messi is watching? That's how!"

  89. 2029:

Great chance for Mario Gomez as he cuts into the box and looks to shoot from 10 yards, but is momentarily put off by a sliding Danish tackle. However, the ball breaks again for Gomez and only Stephan Andersen's quick dart off his line to claim the ball prevents it becoming 2-1 to Germany.

  90. 2027:

Only former striker Jurgen Klinsmann has scored more goals for Germany at the Euros (five) than Lukas Podolski (four). (Opta)

  91. 2027:

Denmark almost gift Germany a goal as William Kvist's attempted clearance falls straight to Sami Khedira 12 yards out and with only Stephan Andersen to beat, but the German midfielder snatches at the shot and it goes wide. It remains the Cristiano Ronaldo show in Kharkiv. He drives down the left and blazes a shot past the post.

  92. 2025:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"Holland seemed to have slowed down since that Portugal equaliser. The ball is being moved slower than it was before they scored and they seem to have really been hit by the equaliser."

  93. 2023:

Portugal have a free-kick of their own in Kharkiv, but from wide on the right. A cross would be most sensible but Miguel Veloso looks to catch Maarten Stekelenburg out with a shot. It is just too high, though, and beats the crossbar by a yard or two.

  94. 2022:
    EURO STATS

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the tournament with his 10th shot - the joint most shots in Euro 2012 so far. (Opta)

  95. 2022:

Germany have a big chance here. Thomas Mueller is fouled by Simon Kjaer for a free-kick right on the edge of the box. It is teed up for Lukas Podolski, who smashes a rising shot just a yard or two over the bar.

  96. 2020:

Cristiano Ronaldo is involved in absolutely everything at the moment. He gets a head to a near-post corner from the right but puts his effort just wide of the post. The Netherlands have no answer to Portugal or their star player.

  97. 2019:
    BBC football analyst Mark Lawrenson:

"The Dutch are very poor at the back and are not making Portugal work hard enough for their chances."

  98.

Harry, via text: "This group is crazy! Expecting to see more changes in the table before the evening is up."

  99. 2019:

Mario Gomez is the tournament's joint top-scorer and has looked lethal so far, but he makes a real mess of a volley from a corner and his fluffed effort falls comfortably into the arms of Stephan Andersen. Meanwhile, in Kharkiv it is still all Portugal and Maarten Stekelenburg is forced to palm away a powerful long-range drive from Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid winger is really in the mood tonight.

  100.

John Witton on Twitter: "Ronaldo definitely deserved that, hope this game's drama keeps up!"

Rachel T on Twitter: "Group of Death? Death-defying Drama, more like!"

Prince Nnaji on Twitter: "It has now become an uphill task for Netherlands. Worse still, their defence line is so poor."

  101. 2017:

Ding, ding, all change. Germany and Portugal currently going through with seven and four points each.

  102. 2016:

Portugal look for a quick second. Cristiano Ronaldo helps a left-wing cross on to Nani on the edge of the area, but after teeing himself up he drags his shot just past the near post. The Netherlands bench looks very worried. They are second-best at the moment.

  103.
MOTD's Martin Keown at Denmark v Germany:

"Bendtner leapt so high he almost went out of ground. He wins the ball fantastically well in the air from the corner and once it comes back to Krohn-Dehli he makes no mistakes. We talked about the importance of set pieces for Denmark and the importance of using their power and they finally managed to use it. Bendter has risen to the challenge there and Krohn-Dehli has been a real find. Set pieces is an area where Germany will not be happy. Their two central defenders will be offended by that goal."

  104. 2015:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

Bendtner does his job, wins the header, puts it back across and one of the smallest players on the pitch gets ahead of a defender to score. Denmark back in it. It was good for them to equalise and get back into the game as quickly as they did."

  105. 2015:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"Well there we are. It has been coming. Portugal in the last 10 to 15 minutes have created chances but were not finishing them, now they have. Ronaldo's movement was excellent and you just knew he was going to score. Portugal have deserved it."

  106. 2013:
GOAL- Portugal (Cristiano Ronaldo) 1-1 Netherlands

Cristiano Ronaldo has not really shone yet at Euro 2012, but he may just have got his side a crucial goal. Joao Pereira flicks a pass through to the Real Madrid striker, who has beaten the defence, and he makes no mistake with a strong finish. It has been coming as well. Portugal have responded very well to goping behind. Portugal back in the qualification places.

  107. 2012:

The Dutch can't worry about the other game, just their own. They go close again as Wesley Sneijder strikes a shot from distance, but Rui Patricio is behind it and saves.

  108. 2012:

So, as things stand Germany and Denmark are heading through to the last eight. When Germany led, it was briefly Portugal in second, but that has all changed........for now.

  109.

Rob, via text: "The Dutch may well go out tonight but the way they knock the ball about I wouldn't fancy England's chances."

  110. 2009:
GOAL- Denmark (Michael Krohn-Dehli, 25 mins) 1-1 Germany

It is all change again. Denmark have not been in the game at all, but they are level. A corner from the right is deep to the edge of the box where it is met by the head of Nicklas Bendtner. The ball falls perfectly for Michael Krohn-Dehli to nod past Manuel Neuer. This is already shaping up to a classic night of Euros football. Keep it up fellas, you're doing a grand job.

  111. 2009:

The Netherlands go close again as Nigel de Jong heads a corner over at the back post. Portugal respond with a header of their own as Cristiano Ronaldo's effort is saved by Maarten Stekelenburg.

  112. 2007:
    BBC football analyst Mark Lawrenson:

"The Dutch have got so many players the wrong side of the ball when they are defending and their coach Bert van Marwijk is going crazy on the touchline."

  113.

Bal, via text: "Stekelenburg's decision making has been diabolical at times. If the Dutch want to progress further than the quarters, I think Tim Krul needs to play - easily the best Premier League goalkeeper behind Hart last season!"

  114. 2006:
    EURO STATS

With 20 minutes played these are the latest standout statistics from the two Group B matches.

    Portugal 0-1 Netherlands

    Possession: 29%-71%

    Balls played: 54-164

    Shots: 4-5

    Denmark 0-1 Germany

    Possession: 38%-62%

    Balls played: 115-160

    Shots: 1-4

  115. 2003:
GOAL- Denmark 0-1 Germany (Lukas Podolski, 19 mins)

Germany capitalise on their early dominance to take the lead and it is the centurian cap-maker with the strike. Thomas Mueller cuts in down the right and crosses to the near post where Mario Gomez mis-hits his shot but straight to Lukas Podolski 12 yards out. He makes no mistake with a calm finish past Stephan Andersen.

  116.

Sarah Morgan on Twitter: "Could Van der Vaart and Van Persie put aside North London differences to collaborate on a comeback film scripts are made of?

Nik Porteus on Twitter: "What a cracking goal from Van der Vaart. Haven't seen many better than that in Euro 2012."

  117. 2003:
    HITS THE WOODWORK

Portugal are inches from hitting back immediately. Cristiano Ronaldo skips inside Ron Vlaar from the left and fires low from the edge of the area, but his effort clips the outside of Maarten Stekelenburg's right-hand post and goes wide. Soon after, Gregory van der Wiel almost destroys his side's early advantage by passing the ball straight to Helder Postiga to put the striker through on goal. Fortunately for the Dutchman, Postiga side-foots wide. Meanwhile, Germany go close again as Mario Gomez fires a 20-yard shot that is just wide.

  118. 2000:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands:

"What an excellent goal. We have seen these from Van der Vaart before and you almost know what he is going to do. He got it accurate, he bent it round, an excellent finish. Just what Holland were looking for."

  119. 1956:
GOAL- Portugal 0-1 Netherlands (Rafael van der Vaart, 11 mins)

Game and group on. It took just a bit more than 10 minutes for the Netherlands to storm into the lead. And it is a storming goal as well. Arjen Robben passes square to Rafael van der Vaart, who takes a touch and curls a cracking shot past Rui Patricio into the far corner from outside the box. The Dutch are half-way to completing their side of the bargain. As it stands, though, it is Germany and Denmark going through.

  120. 1954:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany:

"Again we saw how smooth the Germans are and how quickly they move the ball through the Denmark midfield. The ball fell to Mueller six yards out but he hit it straight at Andersen, who has had a fine tournament by the way."

  121. 1953:

Germany should be ahead. It is Thomas Mueller again with the chance as the ball breaks to him just a few yards from goal following a cross from the left, again from Mezut Ozil. However, the German hits his shot straight at Danish keeper Stephan Andersen, who gratefully clutches the ball to his chest after initially saving with his feet. Meanwhile, in Kharkiv, Cristiano Ronaldo sees a free-kick from 30 yards deflect behind off the wall. Netherlands keeper Maarten Stekelenburg is fouled as Portugal look to capitalise on the corner and the Dutch survive.

  122.

Phil Hakim on Twitter: "Do you remember 2006? There were 16 yellows and 4 reds when the Dutch played the Portuguese. This could get messy..."

Si's insights on Twitter: "So this is it. Van Marwijk has finally overcome his nepotism and started Van Der Vaart. But is it too late? Logic says so."

  123. 1950:

Netherlands on the attack. Shock. Gregory van der Wiel is released down the right and his cross is just too high for Robin van Persie, but the ball falls to Wesley Sneijder, who can't keep his shot down.

  124. 1947:

First effort to Germany in Lviv. Mezut Ozil's cross from the left travels through the box to Thomas Mueller wide right, but his left-foot shot goes just over the bar.

  125. 1946:
BBC Radio 5 live summariser, and former England manager, Graham Taylor at Portugal v Netherlands

"The atmosphere is tremendous. I am looking forward to a special game but I hope it doesn't drop away because of what rides on the game."

  126. 1946:
BBC MOTD's Jonathan Pearce at Denmark v Germany:

"Everybody is talking about a Germany v Spain final but there is a long way to go. From what we have seen of them Germany, they should reach the quarter-finals but look what happened to the Russians. Denmark need to summon up the spirit of 92 and produce a shock that would rock the tournament to its core. It is all set up to be another absorbing night in Lviv."

  127. 1945:
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra summariser, and former Denmark midfielder, Jan Molby at Denmark v Germany

"All of the players looked very focused during the national anthems. They know it's all still to play for. Denmark know they are up against it and will need a bit of luck like they had against the Netherlands in their first game. They will certainly need to apply the same effort."

  128. 1945:
    KICK-OFF- Denmark v Germany & Portugal v Netherlands

The Denmark v Germany game is off just a few seconds before Portugal v Netherlands.

  129. 1943:

Right, here we go. Once more unto the breach, dear friends.

  130.

Michael, via text: "Don't write Holland off yet. Portugal have only just scraped past Denmark and lost to a Germany who only just got out of neutral. It is gonna rain goals."

  131. 1943:

National anthems time. As usual, there is a mix of stony-faced concentration and passionate singing from the players. Cristiano Ronaldo is a singer.

  132.

Infostradalive on Twitter: "#Germany‬ starts with their youngest ever line-up at European Championship: 25 years and 107 days."

  133. 1938:

BBC Radio 5 live commentator Alan Green in Kharkiv: "How can you have a situation where Germany have won two games but might not qualify? How can you have the Netherlands having lost two games yet still might qualify? That is why Group B is a great group and why it has been called the Group of Death.

"The Dutch know what they have to do, they have to win by two clear goals and consequently it is a much more attacking team that has been named."

  134. 1937:

If nothing else, this tournament has kept interpretive dancers in work. Once again they get to do their stuff as the pre-game ceremonies take place in both Lviv and Kharkiv. Meanwhile, the teams are in the tunnels, no doubt psyching themselves up to head back into the group of death.

  135.

Babu Rajendran on Twitter: "Willems struggled against Germany. Ronaldo and Nani to exploit?"

Daniel Law on Twitter: "Expecting nothing but a third win for the Germans tonight, with Gomez extending his scoring record."

Rahul Mahida on Twitter: "Think the mighty Ronaldo is going to show just why he is the best in the world today. Monster awakens."

  136.

Benji, via text: "Not surprised to see Van Bommel dropped- he's a great player but today, Holland need to play offensively. That said, I would have preferred him to De Jong."

  137. 1935:

The Danes have their own star name who has yet to do much at Euro 2012. Is Christian Eriksen going to show tonight what has got so many scouts flocking to Ajax to see him play? "It's true that I've been lacking some energy and freshness," Eriksen said. "I don't think I've played as I was supposed to. Even if some aspects have gone well, it's just that it feels something is lacking." Is that a no, then?

  138. 1932:

There are questions within the big questions that also need answering tonight? One being, will the real Cristiano Ronaldo show up for Portugal? During the game with Denmark, Danish fans tweaked his nerves by chanting the name of his rival in Spanish football, Lionel Messi. Ronaldo wouldn't let it lie (oh, he just would not let it lie!). "Do you know where Messi was this time last year?," he said. "He was being knocked out of the Copa America on home soil with Argentina. I think that's worse."

  139. 1927:
BBC Sport's Jess Creighton at City of Salford Stadium:FT: England women 1-0 Netherlands women

"A crisp, attacking second half gives England a vital three points which sends them to the top of Group 6. The Lionesses were like a different team after Ellen White took to the field after half time and it was Yankey's opportunist free kick which sealed the win."

  140. 1927:

Despite their wastefulness in front of goal, midfielder Mark van Bommel says team spirit is not a problem. It certainly wasn't for him earlier when he was grinning like a mentalist at Metalist.

"The atmosphere, after two losses, is not as it would be if we'd won twice," said Van Bommel. "It's not that we're completely down. We've got a really nice last chance and we're going to take it."

There is only one thing that will ensure Dutch harmony, though, and that is a 2-0 win and a Denmark defeat tonight.

  141. 1923:

Often stats can be misleading. On other occasions they paint the picture as clear as crystal. The latter is very much the case when you look at the Netherlands' tournament stats. The Dutch have produced a massive 41 attempts on goal in two matches, but only hit the target with 14 of them. With just one goal to their name so far, they will know where to point the analytic finger if it all goes wrong tonight.

  142.

Jamie Hardesty "Heitinga rightly dropped for surprisingly poor first two games. So it isn't just attacking players not reproducing club form."

Ebenezer Annan on Twitter: "Bert van Marwijk has come to his senses. Van der Vaart & Huntelaar to start. I hope it's not too late."

Sekar C ‏on Twitter: "Netherlands are a classic example. Having a great attacking team playing attractive football isn't enough if you can't defend."

  143.

John Watson on Twitter: "Really enjoyed the ladies game on BBC2. Played in the proper fashion and spirit."

  144. 1916:

    Referee: Carlos Velasco Carballo (Spain)

  146. 1914:
England international Sue Smith at the City of Salford Stadium:

"England relaxed in the second half and that is what we need to do. We were forcing things in the first half we didn't need to. [Substitute] Ellen White made a fantastic contribution in the second half she made things happen."

  147.

Will, via text: "Two draws tonight please to see the two most exciting teams go through. The other two would bore us to a 1-0 win versus Greece and Czech Republic! We want to be entertained!"

  148. 1914:

"But how can the Dutch save themselves? How?!" I hear you howl in fictitious anger. Calm down, I'm going to tell you. Well, in fact, Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf is going to tell you. But he only says what I was thinking. Honest. "The key thing in Kharkiv for the Netherlands will be about scoring goals," says Seedorf/thinks me. "They need to go for it, because Portugal will definitely sit back and wait and make things difficult for them," he surmises/I opine. "But the main thing is that they have to believe they can win," he concludes/I muse. So alike, me and Clarence.

  149. 1908:
BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko:FULL-TIME- England women 1-0 Netherlands women

"Massive win for England in their quest to reach the Euro 2013 finals - and the plaudits must go to quick-thinking winger Rachel Yankey. Yankey's cheeky 20-yard free-kick, taken while the disorganised Dutch were still trying to form their wall, was the highlight of a tight encounter at the City of Salford Stadium. The Dutch won't be happy, but Yankey ensured she got the nod from the referee before dispatching. After a nervy first-half display, England threw off the shackles after the break and know they will qualify as Group Six winners by beating both Slovenia and Croatia in their final two games."

  150.

Infostrada Sports on Twitter: "Tonight, Lukas Podolski will become the 7th youngest player to 100 international matches."

  151. 1908:

Portugal have a proud record to maintain tonight. They are the only country at Euro 2012 who have never crashed out in the group phase of a Euro finals before. The Netherlands' record is not quite that good, but still decent. They have not been eliminated in the group phase of a major championship since Euro 1980.

  152.

John Watson on Twitter: "Brilliant to see players getting on with the game and not diving and feigning injury."

  153.

BBC Sport's Jessica Creighton on Twitter: "Hope Powell signals her players to "calm it." 1-0 up in must-win game with minutes left to play. Seems like sound advice."

  154. 1905:

One thing that does not bode well for the Dutch tonight is that they have only registered one win over Portugal from their last 10 meetings. This was a 1-0 victory in a European Championship qualifier in October 1991. Portugal have won six, with the other three matches drawn. In addition, Portugal have kept a clean sheet against the Netherlands in six of their 10 encounters.

You may also remember that one of the recent meetings between these two was in the 2006 World Cup, when it kicked off big style and included a record-equaling 16 yellow cards, leading to four red cards (two for each country).

Nothing gets your big tournament juices flowing like a bit of bad blood.

  155. 1900:
BBC Radio 5 live's Robbie Savage on 606:

"Wayne Rooney has to start. He is the X-Factor of England. Imagine this scenario where Roy Hodgson doesn't start Wayne Rooney and they lose and go out what happens? When he is on the pitch and has that England shirt on it gives everyone a lift."

  156. 1859:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Denmark v Germany (19:45 BST)

Just the one change for Germany this evening and it is an enforced one. Former Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng is suspended so Bayer Leverkusen's Lars Bender comes into the side at right back, where he has never played for club or country.

The Danes have also made one change. Jakob Poulsen replaces the injured Dennis Rommedahl in midfield.

Incidentally Germany and Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski becomes the youngest European player to reach 100 caps tonight.

  157. 1859:
BBC Sport's Jess Creighton at City of Salford Stadium:

"Official attendance confirmed as 5,505. English fans continue to see their team dominant the Netherlands at the Salford Stadium. The Lionesses are creating lots of chances & looking dangerous everytime they push forward. Yankey's free-kick still the difference between the two sides."

  158.

Formula One driver Timo Glock on Twitter: "Come on Germany another win tonight."

  159. 1857:

We're getting our first shots of the Dutch players out on the pitch in Kharkiv. Considering the situation they look pretty relaxed. Mark van Bommel is having a good old laugh. But then, he's not starting tonight.

  160. 1855:

There may be more on German minds tonight than just topping Group B. Germany and Denmark have not met in the European Championships since their memorable meeting in the final of 1992 when the Danes completed a fairytale victory, having being drafted into the finals at the last minute.

Of the total 25 meetings between the two nations, Germany have won 14, Denmark eight, with three draws. Denmark salvaged a draw in the last meeting between the two, a friendly in August 2010, recovering from 2-0 to rescue a 2-2 draw.

  161. 1853:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Portugal v Netherlands (19:45 BST)

Portugal are unchanged from the 3-2 win over Denmark.

Netherlands make three changes as striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, playmaker Rafael van der Vaart and centre-back Ron Vlaar come into the side in place of defensive midfielder Mark van Bommel, winger Ibrahim Afellay and centre-back Johnny Heitinga.

  162.

Shoaib Khan on Twitter: "That was a disgrace what Rachel Yankey has done!! Dutch were clearly organising!! Outrageous."

  163.

Lawrence Kelechi on Twitter: "I too had high expectations of this Dutch side. Hoping they progress and expecting the worst. They only need a miracle, now."

Jack Anniky on Twitter: "Willems looks set to start for Holland, massive vote of confidence from the manager. He had a torrid time against Germany."

  164. 1850:

"Everybody is talking about a Germany-Spain final. But there is a long way to go to get there. We have not achieved anything yet." So says Germany's Mario Gomez, who is joint top-scorer in the competition with three goals.

The Germans have to get out of Group B first. Granted, with two wins from two, they are in pole position to do so. But if yesterday taught us anything it is that nothing is cut and dry in Euro 2012.

  165. 1848:

Right, enough about last night. We're just an hour away from kick-off in tonight's games from Group B.

  166. 1845:

As I said just a couple of entries back, Greece won the Euros in 2004. Our tactical analysis piece of last night's action picks up on that very theme to suggest the Greeks evoked the spirit of eight years ago to spur them on in this tournament. The win over Russia was in fact their first since the final victory in 2004.

  167. 1841:
Former Leeds United forward Lucy Ward at the City of Salford Stadium:

"It was quick thinking. I saw this happen in the cup final. It was a great thinking by Rachel Yankey. It is great for England but if I was one of those Dutch players I really would not be happy. You have to have someone stood on the ball to make sure it does not happen and it was a poor goal to concede."

  168. 1838:
GOAL- England women (Rachel Yankey) 1-0 Netherlands women

A bit of opportunist free-kick taking from Rachel Yankey gives England the lead. With the Dutch wall still getting itself in shape she curls an effort high and beyond the ill-prepared away keeper and into the net.

  169. 1838:

Just glanced at a TV set and noticed it is about to kick off in Paris, where the Allies XI is taking on the Fuhrer's German outfit. I'm predicting the game will end 4-4, with the Brazilian lad scoring, that defender who looks like John Wark having a stormer and Rocky saving a penalty. I also suspect there will be a suspicious delay before the start of the second half. Let's see if I'm right. Of course, in the real world, Germany take on Denmark is just over an hour at Euro 2012.

  170. 1834:
Bolton striker Kevin Davies, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live's 606:

"Andy Carroll is starting to look like the player he was at Newcastle. It took him a little while to settle at Liverpool but as the season has gone on he has become more and more confident. If Roy Hodgson does leave him out on Tuesday it will be a massive decision."

  171. 1833:
Former Leeds United forward Lucy Ward at the City of Salford Stadium:

"The momentum of the game is shifting and I think that is important. You have to score when you are on top and the Dutch did not do that in the first half. Let's see if England can do it now they are on top."

  172.

KevinOnEarth on Twitter: "England definitely dominating since half time. Can they keep it up?"

  173. 1832:

It is an understatement to say the Greeks were chuffed with their win last night. They went absolutely bonkers. Goalscorer Giorgos Karagounis was particularly pumped up, both during and after the game.

At one point in the second half he was denied a penalty kick and was booked for diving and spent the following two minutes chucking every toy he had to hand out of his pram. Even after he was substituted he spent his time on the bench chuntering away.

However, he was a picture of joy at full-time. Angry, angry joy. "We did not give up. We can compare this to our cherished moments in Portugal in 2004," he said after.

They won it in 2004, you see. But you knew that.

  174. 1824:
BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko:England women 0-0 Netherlands women

"With England's attacking armoury rather limited in the first half, boss Hope Powell moves quickly at the break to introduce Ellen White at the expense of lone striker Rachel Williams. The hard-working Arsenal star has given the Three Lions renewed impetus and suddenly blasts a thumping Marco van Basten-esque volley past the hapless Dutch goalkeeper into the back of the net. But her celebrations are quickly cut short by the assistant referee waving her flag in the Salford wind for offside."

  175.

Sam, via text: "Hope that it is a Germany and Denmark one-two. Portugal don't deserve to go through as they rely to much on Ronaldo. The Dutch have been too negative."

  176. 1824:

It was a costly night for Poland all round yesterday. Not only did they see their challenge for Euro glory on their own turf evaporate, but they also lost a coach after Franciszek Smuda announced he was leaving his post. To be fair, his contract was always expiring after the tournament, so it wasn't such a big surprise. He is the first managerial casualty of the competition, though. He probably won't be the last either. Major international tournaments have a ruthless way of sorting the wheat from the gaff(er).

If Netherlands exit tonight, I suspect Bert van Marwijk will be getting his CV in order.

  177. 1817:
BBC Radio 5 live's Robbie Savage on 606:

"John Terry is a good leader, he is a good organiser and a fantastic captain for Chelsea. When he plays for England I think the movement does it for him a bit.

"I'd like to see Phil Jagielka get a chance against Ukraine and if he does well, let him keep his place. When England beat Spain Jagielka and Joleon Lescott were the defensive pair.

"Terry is fantastic for Chelsea but I think it is time to give Jagielka and Lescott their chance."

  178. 1817:
BBC Sport's Jess Creighton at City of Salford Stadium:

"England 0-0 Netherlands at half-time. The Dutch enjoying the majority of possession & looking much more comfortable on the ball. England will need to switch gear & up their speed for the next half."

The second half of that game has just got under way. It is live on BBC Two.

  179. 1816:
BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko:England women 0-0 Netherlands women

"So the teams remain deadlocked in the crucial Euro 2013 qualifier as the referee blows the half-time whistle in Salford. England, knowing they must win to stand any chance of finishing as group winners, seem slightly nervous against a composed Dutch team content to try catching out their hosts on the quick break. Hope Powell will be aiming to calm her players at the half-time break ahead of an important 45 minutes."

  180.

James on Twitter: "Nicklas Bendtner to show his potential worth to Arsenal tonight with Robin van Persie seemingly leaving? Stranger things have happened."

Ryan Smith on Twitter: "Nicklas Bendtner to outshine Mr Gomez tonight, Denmark to win the tournament, you heard it here first."

  181. 1814:

What about last night then eh? Pretty good right? In case you missed it all and your Sunday has been so lazy you couldn't even be bothered to find out, I can tell you that Russia went from group leaders to tournament leavers in the space of 90 minutes courtesy of a 1-0 defeat by Greece, which in turn sent the Greeks through. In the other game, the Czech Republic beat Poland 1-0, meaning the Czechs are into the quarters and the co-hosts crash out, still without a Euros final win to their name. And, for the second day running, one of the stadiums was wetter than otter's pocket.

  182. 1808:
Bolton striker Kevin Davies, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live's 606:

"Wayne Rooney has to start for England on Tuesday. I understand the point a bit regarding his temperament but he is our best player. If we want to win the tournament he has to be playing.

"When the camera has panned on him during these last two games you can see he has been desperate to play. With the two-game ban he is keen to get out there and that can only be good for England."

  183.

Bob, via text: "Right, brain hurting from trying to understand the permutations. Actually so confused think my brain has permed."

  184. 1806:
England international Sue Smith at the City of Salford Stadium:

"It was a really tight half. I think we predicted that before it started. The Netherlands have sat back and as soon as England have got forward they have doubled up and made it hard for them.

"We seem to be a bit nervous and I think it is all that must-win pressure. We need to relax, let our confidence show and start playing."

  185. 1806:
HT: England women 0-0 Netherlands women
  186. 1805:

England boss Roy Hodgson is certainly glad to have Rooney back. "It is a lift because he is one of our important players. A quality player. A player also with a lot of experience, not least of all tournament experience," said Roy. "To come here and play the first two games without him is not something we have chosen but luckily we have got through those games and hopefully now he will be coming back at the right time to help us in the competition."

Hodgson also hints that he will pair in him attack with club-mate Danny Welbeck, although he has also warned against being too expectant of the 21-year-old, despite his fine flicked finish against Sweden.

It's almost as if Roy doesn't get the English at all. Expectation is what we do... right up until they fail and then we do everything in our power to destroy them.

  187. 1757:
BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko:England women 0-0 Netherlands women

"Ten minutes until the break and we're still waiting for a bit of magic in the penalty area from either side. Hope Powell's side have enjoyed their greatest success down the Dutch left with Eniolo Aluko firing an angled drive at the Dutch keeper. But the visitors look dangerous on the break, with prolific Dutch striker Manon Melis showing a blistering turn of pace to skip past a sluggish England defence moments later. However, Three Lions keeper Rachel Brown was equal to Melis's fierce half volley."

  188.

CripCooke on Twitter: "Women's international football may have it's critics but there have been spells of real quality in this game. Entertaining!"

  189. 1756:

While we're discussing England, Roy Hodgson will of course be welcoming striker Wayne Rooney back into the side after his two-game suspension. Rooney has insisted he has no problems with his attitude or temperament ahead of the potentially hostile Euro 2012 atmosphere against Ukraine on Tuesday.

"I'm happy and ready to play. I've been looking forward to it and now I'm available to play I'm excited."

It is a good job Rooney is back because judging by the amount he fidgeted in his seat during the Sweden game, he does not make a good viewer. I'd hate to be sat behind him in the cinema. Especially duirng a film that'll get him all excited. Like Top Cat.

  190.

OptaJoe on Twitter: "The Netherlands' conversion rate of 2.6% in Euro 2012 is the fifth lowest in Euro finals history (1980-2012)."

  191. 1750:

As for Ukraine, their talismanic striker Andriy Shevchenko is rated a doubt to face England in Tuesday's crunch clash. The former Chelsea player was ruled out of his side's penultimate training session before the match in Donetsk because of a knee problem.

A Ukraine football association spokesman said: "Andriy suffered a kick to his knee during the second half against Sweden and then another kick in the same area against France.

"He is unable to train today and I would say he is doubtful for Tuesday.

"He has seen the doctor and is now having treatment. We hope he can still take part but I repeat, he is doubtful."

  192. 1749:

I've got some injury-related team news to bring you regarding England's decisive Group D clash with co-hosts Ukraine on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it is bad news for both sides.

England's saviour against Sweden, Theo Walcott, has left the training field as a precaution over a potentially injured hamstring. "Unfortunately, he had a slight setback in training today so that's the major concern for him. He felt the hamstring that of course kept him out for so long at the end of last season and we were slightly concerned when he came to us.

"It was a precaution to take him from the field because he felt a slight tightness there so really whether he is a real contender for a starting position will depend on what the medical people can tell me."

  193. 1746:
Match of the Day analyst Clarence Seedorf

"I have not been as impressed with the Germans as I was in the World Cup...yet. But they are a team who grow as tournaments go on and they are still my favourites.

"The Danes are a fighting team, they never give up and they have the quality to be a dangerous side."

  194.

Gary Fletcher on Twitter: "Hope Portugal go out tonight to make Ronaldo realise he isn't some kind of God. Denmark deserve to progress."

Adam on Twitter: "Can't wait for tonight Group B any two team can go through, hopefully its Portugal and Denmark."

Anurag Bhide on Twitter: "Hope Denmark get through. Given no chance of getting through when drawn into Group of Death but far more deserved than the Dutch."

  195.

Ollie, via text: "Write the Dutch off at your peril, no team has ever got through the Euros group stage after losing their first two games... until tonight!"

  196. 1746:

Are Germany living up to the hype? What has gone wrong for the Dutch? Is there more to come from Portugal? Have the Danish exceeded expectation? And who will go through? The answers to all these questions can be found in a piece from BBC Sport's Chris Bevan, who has been chatting to both Chris Waddle and Jan Molby.

I tell you what, that Rocky fella is one hell of a goalkeeper. Although Pele has just made him look a bit of a mug.

  197.

Danny Kibble on Twitter: "Is this the cleanest tournament ever? 18 games and only one penalty and two red cards and they were all in the opening match!"

  198. 1740:
Former Leeds United forward Lucy Ward at City of Salford Stadium:

"There is a lot at stake in games like this at international level. No one wants to make a mistake, no one wants to be the one that concedes a goal. The Dutch really don't have anything to lose and if they get the three points they are well on their way to avoiding the play-offs."

  199. 1737:
BBC Sport's Jonathan Jurejko:England women 0-0 Netherlands women

"After a period of early Dutch dominance, England are settling nicely into their vital Euro 2013 qualifier at the City of Salford Stadium. The first quarter of an hour has been an open affair with England's best chance falling to Birmingham City striker Rachel Williams, who planted a firm eight-yard header straight at the Dutch keeper. Plenty of endeavour from both sides but the game is lacking quality in the final third at the moment."

  200. 1737:

So, as you can see, while it may look dire for the Dutch, their elimination is far from cut and dry. Is it really beyond the realms of possibility for them to beat Portugal by two goals or more and Germany beat Denmark?

Meanwhile, over on ITV4 (which is showing Escape to Victory), Pele has just given Michael Caine a lesson in tactics. Apparently, he's a big man and he's out of shape, but for Pele this is a full-time job.

  201.

Ned, via text: "Got a real feeling Holland will make it through tonight. Looking forward to see the teams score in the Por-Ned game due to my name!"

  202. 1732:

I'll do this team by team...

Germany - will qualify with a win or a draw. They will also go through with a 3-2 defeat, or a higher-scoring one-goal loss. They're out if Portugal beat the Netherlands, but through if the Portuguese do not claim three points.

Denmark - a win sees them qualify. A draw will only be enough if Netherlands beat Portugal. Lose, and they're out.

Netherlands - only a win will do, and even that might not be enough. They have to win by more than one goal and hope Germany beat Denmark.

Portugal (ie. the complicated one) - a win secures qualification unless Denmark beat Germany 3-2, or by a higher-scoring one-goal margin. They'll go through with a draw if Denmark do not beat Germany. A one-goal defeat would still see them through if Germany beat Denmark, but if it is by any more they are out.

    Permutations... done.

  203. 1726:

The Netherlands are, of course, not the only team playing today. There are three other sides involved, as is the nature in a four-team group. The beauty of the setup for tonight is that any two of the four can go through, meaning any two can also get sent home.

I need to psych myself up for this next bit because I'm about to try and tell you what the permutations are for tonight's group of death. Right, here we go...

  204.

Felix Henderson on Twitter: "Still no 0-0 draws in the tournament yet and not expecting any tonight. Germans to win easily and Portugal to edge win over Holland."

Vithusan on Twitter: "Germany trashing the Danish, topping the group and Holland spectacularly stunning the Portuguese to go through on goal difference."

  205. 1720:
Match of the Day analyst Clarence Seedorf

"In both of the games so far I felt the moment Netherlands really needed to go for the win or equaliser they didn't have the energy to do so. In the second half against Denmark it was really clear. They had created a lot of chances but defensively they gave a lot of space away and you could see that they were not strong enough to go forward as a team.

"There is disappointment back home of course because the expectations were high before the tournament, which is normal after being in the final of the World Cup. I think the disappointment has been based on individuals. They have seen we have created chances and should have scored but I have never felt that Netherlands have been in total control of their game.

"The disappointment is in Robin Van Persie not scoring when a lot of chances were created in the first game and some disappointment with the coach for his selections. If something was to happen in a negative way with the Netherlands at this tournament it will be because of the first match."

  206. 1718:

So, basically, the Dutch women can give a pointer to their male equivalents today. Lord knows the Netherlands men need some real inspiration. They are staring into the abyss. What they need now is some words of wisdom from a four-time Champions League winning Dutch midfielder with over 80 international caps to his name. Luckily, we know just the man...

  207. 1712:

Before we charge head first into all these men's European Championship shenanigans, there's some action from the women's equivalent taking place today in the shape of a qualifier between England and the Netherlands. Head coach Hope Powell has admitted her team "need three points" if they want to keep hopes of automatic qualification from Group 6 alive and do away with a dreaded two-legged play-off in October. And for those with their Olympic hats on, remember this is a good opportunity to watch a number of potential Olympians ahead of Powell naming the London 2012 women's squad on Tuesday, 26 June. Kick-off is a couple of minutes away and you can watch all the action over on BBC Two.

  208.

Simon Stanfield on Twitter: "Who will survive the Group of Death? These #Euro2012 games are really exciting doncha think?"

I do think. I do think, very much.

  209. 1710:

So, with just over two and a half hours to go until kick-off I'd like to hear from you with your thoughts and theories as we slowly build to fever pitch. How do you see the group of death ending? Will tonight be fatal for the Dutch or are we in for another massive shock to the Euros system? After all, Euro 2012 is the sporting event everyone is thinking about. Even, possibly, David Nalbandian, who forgot he was playing in the final at Queen's earlier and almost volleyed a line-judge into the stands. 210. 1705:

The Netherlands are on life support at the moment. Two defeats from their opening two games have left many people's tip for the tournament propping up Group B and teetering on the brink of elimination.

Only a win over Portugal will do for Bert van Marwijk's side and even then that might not be enough. But then, such is the madness of this group that there remains a decent chance of the Dutch qualifying, while Germany, who have won their first two games, could still go out.

Confused? Just you wait until I get stuck into the permutations.

It is best just to think of it like this: whatever happens, today is going to contain more drama than a fire at Rada.

  211. 1700:

You can't take you eyes off Euro 2012 for a second. Just when you think you've got it sussed, it throws a gigantic Greek and Czech-flavoured curveball right in your bamboozled face.

Last night, the tournament suffered its biggest casualty so far, with Russia surprisingly exiting stage left, followed by winless co-hosts Poland, both of whom join the Republic of Ireland and Sweden in the Euros outbox.

Today, though, could knock such eliminations out of the park. It is group of death time again, and two more teams are about to see their challenge expire.
