Shrewsbury missed the chance to win promotion from League Two as they were held to a draw away at Accrington.

Terry Gornell put the Shrews ahead in the first half with a shot on the turn from 12 yards against his former club.

The hosts nearly equalised when Luke Joyce headed goalwards but Shrewsbury's Matt Richards was well positioned to block the ball on the goal-line.

However, Bryan Hughes ruined the visitors' party when he levelled late on with a long-range low half-volley.

With Torquay losing at AFC Wimbledon, Shrewsbury would have clinched their spot in League One next season if they had beaten Accrington.

The Shrews are still well placed as they are second and five points ahead of fourth-placed Torquay with only two matches remaining.

A win for Shrewsbury in their home match against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, 28 April will take Shrews up.

Accrington manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I don't think anyone could deny that we were good value for a point.

"Taking a point from a very strong Shrewsbury side feels like a win and it's only what we deserved.

"In the last two or three games, against the bigger clubs, we've shown some really good signs.

"You can judge success by supporters and when fans clap you off at the end of games, whether you win, lose or draw, it means you're doing something right."
