Pearson nodded Frankie Artus's corner past visiting keeper Paul Farman and nearly added a second, only for Sam Rents to clear his effort off the line.

He was not to be denied after the break, when he turned in the rebound after his header, again from an Artus corner, was blocked on the line.

The Mariners climbed to eighth place, with Gateshead falling to 10th.
