Huddersfield closed the gap on second-placed Sheffield United to five points with victory at Leyton Orient.

Matthew Spring gave the hosts the lead with a right-footed 18-yard volley after Huddersfield failed to clear.

The visitors drew level as Jimmy Smith directed a Jordan Rhodes back-heel into his own net and the striker netted his 36th goal of the season with a tap-in.

Rhodes sealed the victory with a neat low finish as Huddersfield move 14 points clear of seventh place.

The striker has now scored in his last five starts against Leyton Orient.

Orient's best chances in the second half fell to Spring and David Mooney.

The O's remain five points clear of the League One relegation zone with 46 points from 40 matches.

Huddersfield Town boss Simon Grayson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"The most important thing was to get the win today and it wasn't a spectacle, but at this stage of the season it's about getting results.

"You see Jordan (Rhodes) getting all different types of goals and he's done that tonight, I'm delighted for him.

"We had to be positive today because we needed to win the game, so I went with an attacking formation. Luckily we've come out with the three points.

"There's going to be twists and turns from now until the end of the season but I've got confidence in the team that we can come out on top."
