Hibernian came from behind to secure an unlikely win that moves them six points clear of bottom side Dunfermline.

Inverness had failed to make their dominance tell until Paul Hanlon pulled down Billy McKay and Greg Tansey scored with the resulting 60th-minute penalty.

But Hanlon headed the equaliser four minutes later and Garry O'Connor swept the ball home after 75 minutes.

Jonny Hayes' cross found the net eight minutes later, but Leigh Griffiths fired Hibs' 85th-minute winner.

The Edinburgh side had gone into the game with confidence low after having won only once in their last nine games in the Scottish Premier League, having not scored in their last three and looking to avoid a third straight defeat.

O'Connor, James McPake, Ivan Sproule and Richie Towell had replaced Jorge Claros, Tom Soares, Roy O'Donovan and George Francombe in the Hibs starting line-up as they looked to recover from last weekend's 2-0 defeat by Dundee United.

Hayes and Kenny Gillet returned from injury and Josh Meekings from suspension for Caley Thistle in place of Thomas Piermayr, Owain Tudur Jones and Shane Sutherland following the hosts' midweek defeat by St Johnstone.

Meekings almost made an immediate impact with a cross that found Gregory Tade free inside the penalty box, but the French striker completely missed his attempted overhead kick.

Hayes too was having an early influence and his low cross found Graeme Shinnie at the back post and the midfielder's low shot rebounded clear off goalkeeper Graham Stack's body.

The winger forced a save himself when he turned inside Pa Saikou Kujabi and had his powerful 16-yard drive turned over the crossbar.

Hibs had not threatened until a back-pass into the six-yard box from Richie Foran forced goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey to scramble the ball clear under pressure from two visiting players.

A Hayes ball through the centre of the Hibs defence put Billy McKay clear, but the striker with only one goal so far this season found the face of the post with his attempt to bend his shot round Stack.

The second half started as the first had ended and Caley Thistle eventually made a deserved breakthrough when Hanlon knocked over McKay as the pair challenged following a corner.

Tansey confidently took advantage of the first penalty kick awarded to his side in the SPL since November 2010.

Inverness ought to have stretched their lead minutes later when Tade pounced on a deflection to be one-on-one with Stack but fired against the advancing goalkeeper and then failed to convert with an acrobatic attempt at an overhead kick.

Caley Thistle paid for that when Hanlon threw himself at Griffiths' corner to head home from 10 yards.

Suddenly, Hibs were a different side and Matt Doherty sped to the bye-line before finding O'Connor with a low cross that the former Scotland striker dispatched from 10 yards.

Hayes looked to have denied Hibs the victory when his cross crept in at the back post, but Griffiths' low 18-yard drive beat Tuffey minutes later to leave Caley Thistle rueing profligacy that has left them with one win in their last nine league games.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Terry Butcher : "That 90 minutes just encapsulated our season.

"In some parts, we were very good, but in other parts of the game we were absolute rubbish.

"We gave away a soft goal at the first because Ross Tokely was not marking his man. Kenny Gillet was then at fault for the second goal and Josh Meekings the third.

"In the second half, we had the back-four from hell."

Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon : "It's a fantastic three points.

"We rode our luck at times and Graham Stack has had to make some great saves, but I felt we deserved it as we've not always had the rub of the green ourselves.

"We seemed a little fearful in the first half and sat back, but we showed what we are capable of as a team in the second half and hopefully now the players will take some belief from that."
