Jordan Rhodes wrote his name into Huddersfield's record books as his penalty beat league leaders Charlton.

Rhodes scored his 35th of the season, the highest post-war total by any Terriers player, after Darel Russell had fouled Gary Roberts in the area.

Charlton, who have now taken only four points from their last five games, were reduced to 10 men when Russell was sent off for kicking out at Antony Kay.

Leon Cort missed a chance to equalise when he headed over from close range.

Home goalkeeper Alex Smithies had also earlier saved from Bradley Wright-Phillips as the Addicks created few opportunities.

Rhodes' goal took him past Iwan Roberts' post-war record, set when he scored 34 goals for the Terriers in 1991-92.

However, he needs one more goal to overtake Sammy Taylor and George Brown, who also scored 35 goals in a season in 1919-20 and 1925-26 respectively.

Charlton remain eight points ahead of second-placed Sheffield Wednesday and nine in front of Sheffield United in third.

Huddersfield Town manager Simon Grayson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"Today there was a fantastic atmosphere a really positive attitude to the players. The players responded to what we had to do today.

"I said to the players that I don't care if they don't do what I asked them to do tactically, but if they ran themselves into the ground then I couldn't ask any more of them.

"It's a buoyant dressing room, understandably. Charlton very rarely threatened our goal even when they had 11 men on the pitch.

"The other night was good but today it was an improvement against a better team."

Charlton boss Chris Powell told BBC London 94.9:

"I'm more frustrated with the tackle on my player that was re-started with a drop-ball.

"It is a disgraceful tackle, I am not here to get someone sent off but if we are talking about trying to stamp out dangerous tackles, and the safety of the players is paramount.

"The sending off was fine, no problem, if you kick out or raise your hands like Novak did but there was no yellow card, Anthony Kay got a yellow - it needs to be fair."
