Alfreton moved seven points clear of the relegation zone with victory over mid-table Cambridge.
The hosts took the lead inside the first minute as Jonathon Thorpe headed into his own net from a long throw.
Andy Pugh put a golden opportunity to level wide of the post, before scoring from the penalty spot after Nathan Jarman fouled Mustafa Tiryaki.
Anthony Wilson ensured Alfreton a fourth win in five with a deflected shot from the edge of the box.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Cambridge United manager Jez George told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
"We've got a break this week, which is good for us, then our season's down to the last four weeks really and in that four weeks - whatever's left, six or seven games - we've got to make sure we're true to our beliefs.
"When you are in a position like we were this time last year, we had to make some decisions for the very, very short term because we were scrapping for our lives and we had to get enough points on the board to stay in this division.
"We're not in that position now, so if we're not going to win games, we'll do it in the right way and make sure we get 11 people on the pitch who'll work their sock off for 90 minutes and substitutes who are going to come on and work their socks off.
"We'll make sure that at least we've got a culture that starts to be created at this club which will be a platform for moving us forward."
