Lincoln City eased their Blue Square Bet Premier relegation worries but plunged rivals Newport County further into trouble with a comfortable win.

Mark McCammon opened the scoring for Lincoln as the unmarked striker glanced John Nutter's corner past County keeper Glyn Thompson at the near post.

Nutter added a second as Thompson could not keep out his 20-yard free-kick.

McCammon should have made the win more convincing but he could not head Jefferson Louis' cross past Thompson.

The County keeper had to be at his best to keep out a long-range Danny Lloyd drive but the FA Trophy finalists endured a fifth successive league game without a win to drop just a place and a point above the drop-zone.

Lincoln's first win in eight games moves the Imps above Newport but still only two points clear of the relegation zone.

Lincoln City manager David Holdsworth told BBC Lincolnshire:

"I am delighted with the players, their performance and their work ethic.

"The boys put an unbelievable shift in and the team spirit in there is absolutely immense.

"I felt it was a much deserved clean sheet against a solid side."

Newport County assistant manager Jimmy Dack told BBC Radio Wales: "We seemed to have got bullied in both halves as their strikers bullied our centre-halves and their centre-halves bullied our strikers so that was a bit disappointing.

"We keep giving ourselves moutaints to climb and these young boys are learning fast."
