Pools skipper Sam Collins was injured in the warm-up, while Walsall lost defender Olly Lancashire early on following a blow to the head.

Antony Sweeney saw his second-half effort saved by home keeper David Grof.

And Walsall should have won it late on when Sam Mantom, on loan from West Brom, squandered a point-blank chance.
