Huddersfield moved to within two points of the automatic promotion places as Alan Lee's winner saw off Hartlepool.

The Terriers dominated possession but Pools goalkeeper Scott Flinders saved Antony Kay's creative backheeled effort and later parried Danny Ward's attempt.

Substitute Lee scored when he collected Joey Gudjonsson's pass on his chest and fired a low half-volley past Flinders.

However, the visitors nearly grabbed a late equaliser but Andy Monkhouse's 35-yard shot bounced off the post.

Huddersfield remain unbeaten since Simon Grayson replaced Lee Clark as manager and have won twice and drawn twice in the new Terriers boss's four games in charge.

Huddersfield Town manager Simon Grayson tells BBC Radio Leeds:

"We didn't play as well as we did at the weekend but we've won the football match and that's what it's all about.

"It's about winning football matches at this stage of the season whether you win them through free flowing football or if it's scrappy, we'll take every three points that are available.

"We're all in it together and we all want to achieve the same targets."

Hartlepool United first-team coach Neale Cooper tells BBC Tees:

"Credit to the players again they've been excellent for me, we knew they would come at us and they did early on.

"Over the piece we finished very strongly, so we're happy with the effort tonight.

"James Poole has pulled a muscle, Luke James is out, Gary Liddle out, Poole now, and Sammy Adjei from Newcastle is now out, I'm doubtful any will be back for Saturday."
