Sheffield Wednesday closed the gap on the automatic promotion places to one point with victory over Bury in Dave Jones's first game in charge.

The Owls took the lead as Ryan Lowe rounded keeper Trevor Carson and played the ball into Michail Antonio's path.

Gary Madine pounced on the line, before Mike Jones set up Antonio's second.

Antonio then turned provider for Lowe to score against his former club, while Steven Schumacher's low drive was merely a consolation for Bury.

Lateef Elford-Alliyu had chances either side of Schumacher's strike - his first came back off the woodwork and he also saw a shot well saved by Stephen Bywater.

The Owls move onto 64 points, one behind local rivals Sheffield United in second place, who lost 3-2 at Walsall.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I thought they did everything we asked of them, we tried to give them certain ideas and they tried to put them into practice.

"I've seen what they're capable of and I think there's a lot more, we've been in a couple of days myself and Terry [Burton] and everything we asked them to do they've tried.

"But they're not to get carried away, just keep their feet on the ground and keep plugging away."

Bury captain Steven Schumacher told BBC Radio Manchester:

"Everyone's disappointed and certain things weren't right in the whole performance.

"We've conceded too many goals again and we're out of the game without doing an awful lot wrong.

"At the moment we're in a relegation dogfight, make no mistake about that and we need nine or ten points to get to safety.

"I don't think we're nervous about it, but we all appreciate that we need to dig in and stay together."
