Jack Hobbs scored his first league goal in more than three years as Hull climbed back into the Championship top six with a comfortable win over Bristol City.

The Hull skipper headed in on 13 minutes from Robert Koren's cross.

Koren then added a second from Robbie Brady's centre before Albert Adomah hit the bar for the visitors.

But Matty Fryatt made sure of the points when he swept in following more good work by Koren.

Nick Barmby's side dropped out of the play-off places after their scheduled game at Portsmouth last week was postponed, but a third win in their last four league matches keeps them in the chasing pack.

Bristol City have now suffered four defeats in their last five games.

Centre-back Hobbs, who was last on target while on loan at Leicester in January 2009, managed to direct his header over the line early on.

And Koren doubled the advantage when he nodded past keeper David James in impressive fashion.

Bristol City were not helped when midfielder Kalifa Cisse was forced off through injury and replaced by Ryan McGivern.

And, although they went close with Adomah's angled drive and Stephen Pearson forced Hull goalkeeper Vito Mannone into a sprawling save late on, Koren was at the heart of much of Hull's endeavour.

The Slovenian twice drew saves from James, before he teed up Fryatt for his first goal since the beginning of December to seal the points.

Hull manager Nick Barmby: "Everyone at this football club believes in Matty Fryatt - he took his goal really well and his all-round game was first-class.

"To get another clean sheet was pleasing, as was scoring three goals.

"We have threatened to score a few goals on several occasions, and the early goals today were important."

Bristol City boss Derek McInnes: "I feel for Hull playing on that pitch as they are a good footballing team and it doesn't do them any favours.

"The team that made the fewest mistakes was going to win the game and slack bits of play from us gave them two early goals.

"There were chances at both ends and we showed plenty of effort in the second half, but it was too little too late as it was always going to be an uphill struggle."
