The relegation-threatened hosts should have led when Phil Walsh fired over from six yards out early on.

And Southport took their chance when it came, with Steve Akrigg heading home Karl Ledsham's free-kick at the far post from a tight angle.

Hayes's Tom Cadmore was denied by Tony McMillan and Sam Sheridan sealed the win with a low drive into the corner.
