Aman Verma scored Kettering's second with five minutes remaining

Kettering ended a 13-game winless run with a victory over play-off hopefuls Gateshead.

Danny Mills volleyed the hosts into the lead after connecting with Djoumin Sangare's pinpoint delivery.

The Poppies then doubled their advantage when Patrick Noubissie found Aman Verma, who fired in a powerful long-range effort into the top corner.

The visitors rallied late on, but despite Jon Shaw's late header, were unable to snatch a late equaliser.

Kettering, who again only named two substitutes, find themselves in the relegation zone only on goal difference now.

It was a second game in charge for interim caretaker manager Ashley Westwood, who stepped in following Mark Cooper's refusal to continue as caretaker boss while the Poppies players are not being paid.

Kettering Town caretaker manager Ashley Westwood told BBC Radio Northampton:

"I think it's only the sixth win all season in the league. The lads deserved their win, it wasn't as though they nicked it.

"We tried to simplify it to be honest. Everyone was aware of their jobs before the game and the spirit is good at the minute.

"I said to them to give their all and they did that. It was fantastic at the final whistle."

Gateshead manager Ian Bogie told BBC Radio Northampton:

"Credit to Kettering, they showed a lot of spirit and fight and got the result they warranted.

"We've had a lot of the ball but never created a great deal and I can have no complaints.

"I'm very disappointed I've got to say, but sometimes you have to give credit to the other team."
