Jimmy Ryan's stoppage time leveller for Scunthorpe denied bottom side Chesterfield a much needed victory.

The Iron took the lead when Niall Canavan headed home Michael O'Connor's corner for his first of the season.

Scott Bowden rifled in a fine equaliser for the Spireites before a bad error by home keeper Sam Johnstone left Craig Westcarr to slot into an open net.

The visitors looked set to end three months without a win but Ryan's 25 yarder left them crestfallen.

Scunthorpe United assistant manager Chris Brass told BBC Radio Humberside:

"In the end you're happy that you've managed to show the character that we'll need between now and the end of the season to get to where we want to be.

"They were poor goals to concede. Not like Jimmy Ryan's for us where you hold your hands up and say 'good goal'.

"It's frustrating because we thought we did okay and these individual errors continue to keep on costing us so we really need to eradicate them."

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It's very disappointing and we should have won the game.

"We started really well and were nice and bright. We put them under pressure and it was there for us. Once we got ourselves into a 2-1 position we looked really comfortable.

"But to get yourself to 2-1 and come so close is soul-destroying."
