Jake Speight signed for Wrexham on a free transfer in the summer

Wrexham moved three points clear in the Blue Square Bet Premier with a battling win over high-flying Southport to extend their unbeaten run to 15 games.

Jake Speight's eighth goal this season gave Wrexham the lead just before half-time with a cool penalty after Steve Akrigg fouled Danny Wright in the box.

Adrian Cieslewicz doubled Wrexham's lead as, fed by Mathias Pogba, he fired home just from inside the area.

Wrexham goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi made a string of great saves.

Karl Ledsham, Jonathan Brown and Simon Grand were all denied by the Reds keeper as the Welsh side enjoyed their third clean sheet in four games.

Wrexham manager Andy Morrell told BBC Radio Wales:

"I am really pleased because this was a really tough game.

"The opposition were very good, with a very good away record and we had to be at our best but we weren't, especially in the first-half.

"Second-half we were a bit better and the goal just before half-time got us out of jail a little bit."

Southport manager Liam Watson told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"I'm not really going to argue about the penalty because Akrigg and Wright had a hold of each other all game and it's a 50/50.

"You've got to give Wrexham credit, they're a good team but some of our players who have been getting a few headlines didn't turn up tonight.

"But the only way they're going to get better is by making errors and they made a few tonight."
