Martin Ling says Torquay are favourites for Argyle game

Torquay United manager Martin Ling says his side are the favourites going into their first Devon derby game with Plymouth Argyle for almost a decade.

The Gulls last played Argyle at Home Park on Boxing Day in 2001.

Torquay have won their last four games  while Argyle needed a late equaliser to force a replay against Southern League Stourbridge  in the FA Cup last week.

"It is a situation where we are the favourites, we can't deny that," Ling told BBC South West  .

Torquay have not beaten Argyle in a league game since April 1972, although they did beat the Pilgrims 1-0 at Home Park in a Football League Trophy match in January 2000.

"Someone told me the other day it's almost 40 years since we last beat them in the league," said Ling.

  • Last match: 2-2 draw at Home Park in December 2001
  • Last Argyle league win: 1-0 at Plainmoor in September 2001
  • Last Torquay league win: 2-1 at Plainmoor in April 1972
  • Total Plymouth wins: 23
  • Total Torquay wins: 8
  • Draws: 12

"We've played them a dozen times, an awful lot of games where the Torquay supporters have had to suffer, so it'd be nice to get a win and make it happy for them.

"I wouldn't know how many games within that 40 years that Torquay have gone in as favourites, but I bet it isn't very often, so it's a good opportunity to put that statistic to bed."

Ling does not think he has ever had five successive wins as a manager, something he would love to achieve on Saturday.

"Even in the successful period of getting promotion with Leyton Orient I still don't think we had five wins on the trot, so it would be a massive occasion for all of us," he added.

"It's a good place to be, four wins, two good away wins against Crewe and Chesterfield, and the lads are looking confident and really looking forward to the game."
