Nick Barmby enjoyed a winning start to life as Hull City caretaker manager by guiding his side into the play-off spots with a fine win at Derby County.

Barmby, who took over from Leicester-bound Nigel Pearson in midweek, went ahead when Matty Fryatt shot into the top corner from 12 yards.

Cameron Stewart made it 2-0 when his strike went through Rams goalkeeper Frank Fielding's hands.

Ben Davies went close for Derby but Hull were good value for their victory.

Davies was denied a potentially game-changing goal by a fine save from Tigers goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, who tipped the midfielder's curling effort around the post.

And the hosts struggled to create clear chances after the break with a blocked Tomasz Cywka strike as close as they came.

The Tigers looked the more likely to add to their lead, with Robert Koren having shots blocked by defenders Mark O'Brien and Jason Shackell.

Stewart also sent a 25-yard shot narrowly wide and substitute Robbie Brady's well-struck drive forced Fielding into action.

Fryatt should have done better with a late chance but headed tamely at goal from a good position.

But Hull did not need to add to their tally and eased to a win which takes them up to sixth spot and means Derby have now lost three games in a row.
