Substitute Charlie Austin hit an injury time winner against 10-man Coventry as Burnley ended a run of two defeats.

The home side opened the scoring against the run of play on the hour mark when Chris Hussey jinked free and crossed for Cody McDonald to head in.

But Burnley levelled through Ross Wallace, who collected Jay Rodriguez's flick and smashed into the top corner.

Gael Birgimana was shown a straight red card for a foul and in the final minute Austin ghosted in to fire a low winner.

Coventry boss Andy Thorn handed summer signing McDonald only his second league start of the season, with Eddie Howe promoting Keith Treacy to the Burnley starting line-up at the expense of Austin.

The Sky Blues were unable to provide a cutting edge and might have been punished midway through the first-half, but Wallace could only shoot into the arms of goalkeeper Joe Murphy.

Andre Amougou nodded another opportunity for the visitors narrowly over from Wallace's corner.

Chances continued for Burnley after the break, Murphy parrying an effort from Junior Stanislas and Austin denied by a brave block from Richard Wood.

McDonald's first goal for Coventry halted the Clarets, but after Austin again went close, Wallace equalised with a sublime strike.

Bigirimana saw red in the 80th minute and there was just time for former Swindon striker Austin to smash low into the net.
