Struggling Leyton Orient came back from behind to secure their first league win of the season and end Preston's seven-match winning run.
Preston took an early lead when Paul Coutts tapped in Jamie Proctor's cross.
Dean Cox headed home Kevin Lisbie's cross for the equaliser and struck again with a 25-yard effort.
Lee Butcher kept the hosts in front with a magnificent save from Graham Alexander's penalty after Scott Cuthbert had fouled Brian McLean.
Preston's run had been their
best in the league since 1959.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade told BBC London 94.9:
"We didn't start too well, and once we got Dean Cox on the ball he was a real thorn in their side and he produced two pieces of quality.
"We're Leyton Orient, we don't do it the easy way, but we are still in a precarious position and need to use today as a platform.
"The fans were magnificent and they can see we don't deserve to be where we are in the table."
