Dunfermline sign Craig Easton as midfield cover

Easton failed to agree terms with Southend this summer

Former Scotland Under-21 midfielder Craig Easton has joined Dunfermline Athletic until January.

The 32-year-old failed to agree a new contract with Southend United in the summer after a season as the League Two outfit's captain.

Pars manager Jim McIntyre said: "Craig is a box-to-box midfielder.

"He has lots of energy and has got a goal in him. We felt we needed more cover in the middle of the park and he fits the bill."

Dunfermline have moved to add to their squad three days after suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat by Second Division outfit East Fife in the Scottish Communities League Cup.

Easton has returned to Scotland's top flight seven years after leaving Dundee United, where he was a product of the youth system and with whom he made 221 appearances.

He moved to Scottish Premier League rivals Livingston in 2004 but headed for Leyton Orient a year later, helping them win promotion from League Two.

Easton moved on to League One rivals Swindon Town in 2007 and spent three years there before joining Southend.

He will not be available for Saturday's visit by Motherwell as the Pars say that the necessary paperwork cannot be completed until next week.
