Three goals in the first seven minutes helped Blackburn Rovers ease past Sheffield Wednesday and reach the third round of the Carling Cup.

Ruben Rochina opened the scoring from Brett Emerton's cross and grabbed his second from a tight angle after David Goodwillie found him inside the area.

Goodwillie added a third soon after, drilling home after a defensive error let him in down the right.

The Owls managed a consolation through Clinton Morrison's impressive finish.

Rochina arrived at Ewood Park from Barcelona in January  and made the most of a rare start to quickly score his first goals for the club.

His first came in the third minute when he lashed in Emerton's cross from deep on the right, and he then doubled the lead a minute later with a cool finish from Goodwillie's pass.

Goodwillie also opened his account for Rovers three minutes later when he broke clear and found the net with a fine right-foot shot.

The League One side were reeling and another defensive lapse almost let in Rovers again as Danny Batth rammed an attempted clearance against Mauro Formica.

Rochina had a hat-trick effort ruled out for offside and debutant Radosav Petrovic fired over the bar as Steve Kean's men continued to dominate.

Former Crystal Palace striker Morrison grabbed a second-half reply for Wednesday when he collected a Chris Lines free-kick and hit a superb left-foot shot across Mark Bunn and into the net.
