Much-changed West Brom cruised past League One side Bournemouth and into the third round of the Carling Cup.

Jerome Thomas fired the visitors into an early lead when he cut in from the left and fired in a shot, before Simon Cox crossed for Marc-Antoine Fortune to slot home and make it 2-0 at the break.

Steve Lovell gave Bournemouth hope when he met Scott Malone's left-wing cross.

But a fine run by Billy Jones set up Cox to curl in Albion's third, and Fortune slammed in a fourth late on.

Baggies manager Roy Hodgson chose to make 11 changes from the side which lost to Chelsea in the Premier League at the weekend, but was vindicated after his fringe players impressed on the south coast.

Bournemouth were left chasing shadows at times as they slipped to a third defeat in eight days, while home keeper Darryl Flahavan kept the score down, twice saving acrobatically from free kicks by stand-in skipper Graham Dorrans.

The match was preceded by a minute's applause in memory of former Cherries captain Roger Brown who died last week, and Red Arrows pilot Flt Lt Jon Egging who lost his life at the nearby Bournemouth Air Festival on Saturday.
