Two second-half goals from Wilfried Zaha helped Crystal Palace battle past Crawley and set up a meeting with Wigan in the second round of the Carling Cup.

Crawley started brightly, with Lewis Price denying Josh Simpson and Charlie Wassmer seeing his shot deflected over.

Tyrone Barnett also fired against the post for Crawley after the interval.

But Jonathan Williams set up Zaha to break the deadlock and, four minutes later, a free-kick was headed down in the box and Zaha grabbed his second.

Crawley will rue their failure to take any of their first half chances, the best of which saw Price acrobatically turn Simpson's volley around the post.

Palace did come back into the game before the break but on-loan QPR defender Peter Ramage could not find the net from six yards and Darren Ambrose saw his shot saved by Scott Shearer after running through.

The League Two side still looked more likely to score, going close again when Barnett hit the woodwork.

But, against the run of play, Zaha put the Eagles ahead from 18 yards and from the home side's next attack he doubled his tally by latching on to an Andrew Davies header.

Crawley kept attacking but the closest they came to a reply was when substitute Scott Neilson fired wide.
