A stunning long-range strike from Calvin Zola gave Burton their first win of the season as they beat Southend.

Zola grabbed his third goal of the campaign when he collected a pass from John McGrath and unleashed a 25-yard shot that went into the top corner.

Southend's Neil Harris had a close-range header blocked by Ross Atkins, who also saved Ryan Hall's 30-yarder.

Burton nearly doubled their advantage late on but Justin Richards failed to beat Glenn Morris when one-on-one.

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:

"In the first-half I got the system wrong, as soon as we changed to 4-3-3 we started to dictate the game in large spells.

"They (the fans) come and pay their money, they did the booing at the right time, at the end of the game to vent their frustrations.

"I'm as frustrated as anyone because I see a good team out there.

"In the last two or three games, and near enough all season, the chances we missed killed us."

Burton Albion manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby:

"We knew we were going to have to come here and ride a storm at stages, but I think we were quite comfortable in the first half.

"We had the better possession but we really were tired and we had to work hard defensively.

"When we lost the ball, we hunted it in packs. I thought [Adam] Bolder and [John] McGrath were immense and, although we didn't show much flare going forward, defensively we did a job.

"I think if you're going to win games away from home, you're going to have to sacrifice a bit of your attacking flare and make sure you're solid at the back. That's what we did and that's why I was delighted with the all-round performance today - I thought it was excellent."
