Mansfield boss Paul Cox abandons Ilkeston FC 'friendly'
Mansfield Town's pre-season friendly away at Ilkeston FC was abandoned by Stags boss Paul Cox after three of his players were injured during the game.
Cox called the game off with 17 minutes left when John Thompson suffered facial wounds that required hospital treatment following a challenge by Gary Ricketts.
The Stags had already lost Martin Riley and Ritchie Sutton to injury.
Ilkeston FC chairman Dave Mantle said striker Ricketts has been suspended while an inquiry takes place.
A statement from Mantle on the club website continued: "We are obviously upset about any player being seriously injured and particularly wish John Thompson a speedy recovery.
"Kevin Wilson [team manager] and I have already met to discuss Gary Ricketts' part in the incidents but we need to gather more evidence and speak to the player himself before deciding our next course of action."
Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield were leading the newly formed Ilkeston FC of Northern Premier Division One South 4-2 when the game was abandoned.
