Hull 0-2 Macclesfield

Two goals from Emile Sinclair secured League Two side Macclesfield a superb Carling Cup win at Hull in one of the shock results of the first round.

Sinclair showed great poise to run clear and side-foot the Silkmen into a 17th-minute lead at the KC Stadium.

The striker struck again in similar circumstances just before the hour mark to seal Town's victory.

The visitors had to defend bravely to finally secure the win, with goalkeeper Jose Veiga making a number of saves.

The win is a huge morale boost for Macclesfield, who were beaten 1-0 at home in their opening league fixture by newly relegated Dagenham & Redbridge.

Hull made seven changes to the side that lost 1-0 at home to Blackpool in their opening Championship fixture on Friday.

However, this should take nothing away from Macclesfield's achievement, which was built around incisive attack and solid defending.

They demonstrated the latter early on when Fryatt drew a fine save from Veiga.

It was not long after than Sinclair ran through to collect a raking pass from Carl Tremarco to slot home the opener.

Fryatt and Danny East saw efforts fly wide and over the crossbar respectively and James Harper's angled shot from inside the area was blocked as Hull looked to restore parity before the break.

Their failure to do so and increasing commitment to attack left them vulnerable and midway through the second half the visitors capitalised when Jonathan Bateson provided the assist for the grateful Sinclair to dart through and finish.

Hull pressed for a foothold in the game for the final half hour, but Macclesfield soaked up much of the pressure, while Jack Hobbs, Jamie Devitt and Nick Barmby all wasted good opportunities for the home side.

"It was the strongest side we could have fielded tonight and the performance was poor - simple.

"We haven't got the depth of squad, I think that's fairly plain to see. A few players had an opportunity tonight and it wasn't good enough. They've had two attempts and scored two goals.

"There are no excuses. Regardless of the team out there tonight we should have been good enough and we were nowhere near good enough, simple as that."

"We're obviously happy with it and obviously to come here as hugh underdogs, it's a great result for the club.

"We thought that they would have plenty of the ball, so we'd thought we'd deny them space, but Emile takes some catching when he gets going and fortunately it's worked.

"They worked their socks off for each other, they were very disciplined and I'm really proud of them."
