Proving his fitness will be the priority for new Port Vale signing Clayton McDonald after signing a six-month contract.

The former Walsall and Oldham defender missed the final two months of last season after injuring his shoulder.

The 22-year-old sees the short-term deal as an opportunity to prove he's over his injury problem.

McDonald told BBC Radio Stoke: "I'm coming in early to do strengthening work but I'm feeling fit and strong."

The tall defender is one of six new signings by Vale manager Micky Adams this summer and says he will benefit from a full pre-season with the squad.

"We've all come into together and it's good banter," said McDonald.

"League Two is a difficult league to get out of, but there's a good nucleus of players here and it's always nice to freshen up the place with new faces."
