Ismail Yakubu was a substitute in the play-off final win over Luton
Newport County have signed former AFC Wimbledon defender Ismail Yakubu.
The 26-year-old, who has Football League experience with Barnet, scored in May's Blue Square Bet Premier play-off penalty shoot-out win over Luton.
But he was one of five players released by the club as they prepare for their first season in the Football League.
"Ismail has agreed to commit to us despite interest from numerous other clubs," said Newport County manager Anthony Hudson.
"I am really excited that we have signed another experienced player.
"He is approaching the peak of his career, with a background of nearly 300 games in the Football League and brings many attributes both and off the pitch.
"Ismail has bought into Newport County and wants to repeat with us, his experiences of promotion that he achieved last season and beyond."
Yakubu joined AFC Wimbledon in the summer of 2010 after being released by Barnet, having made 296 appearances for the club since his debut as a 17-year-old.
The England C international played 33 times last season, scoring twice before converting his penalty in the play-off final.
