Manchester United winger Bebe has agreed a one-year loan switch to Turkish club Besiktas.

The Portuguese moved to Old Trafford from Vitoria de Guimaraes in August 2010 for a reported £7.4m but has struggled for first-team opportunities.

The 20-year-old made seven senior appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson's side last season, scoring two goals, including one in the Champions League.

Besiktas finished fifth in their domestic division in 2010/11.

Bebe had signed a five-year contract with Guimaraes in July 2010 but Ferguson moved for the attacker after apparently being alerted to his potential by former United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2009 Bebe was a resident at the Casa do Gaiato shelter in Portugal, an organisation which helps homeless people and uses football as a way of getting them off the streets

The forward had been at Guimaraes for only five weeks and had not even played a game when Ferguson made his approach.

The Scot later admitted he spent less time scouting Bebe than would normally have been the case, as he was keen to beat other clubs, including Real Madrid, to the player's signature.

The transfer to Old Trafford represented a major step forward in the career of a footballer who spent part of his childhood living on the streets.

During that time he represented Portugal in the homeless World Cup .

Normally you would assess someone over a longer period of time but other clubs were starting to have a look so we made a quick decision

Sir Alex Ferguson, August 2010

Bebe has yet to be capped at senior international level, but he made his debut for Portugal Under-21s in September 2010, operating as a striker in a 1-0 defeat by England.

His first appearance for United came in a 5-2 Carling Cup victory at Scunthorpe in the same month.

But while he was used occasionally by Ferguson in the opening months of the campaign, he featured only once after November, in the 1-0 FA Cup win over Crawley in February.
