Tom Pope scored a late equaliser to earn Port Vale a draw with Hereford.

In a first half of few chances, Steven Leslie was denied by home goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson and Vale's Louis Dodds shot at Bulls keeper Adam Bartlett.

James McQuilkin gave Hereford the lead when he beat Tomlinson from outside the area with a superb effort.

Vale's Gary Roberts fired wide as Hereford neared a first win at Vale Park since 1979, but Pope's close-range header denied them in stoppage time.

MANAGER QUOTES

Port Vale caretaker manager Mark Grew told BBC Radio Stoke: "All credit to Hereford, I thought they played some good stuff and were quick on the break.

"I'm delighted and who knows how important that point could be.

"What's happened before has gone, we've got to get back on the training ground to get match-sharp again."

Hereford manager Jamie Pitman told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"The equaliser was a killer blow because we didn't really see it coming.

"It feels more like a defeat to us than a draw because we were almost home and dry.

"The boys worked really hard and we restricted Vale to very few chances. We also broke with a lot of pace and purpose and I wasn't surprised we got a goal."
