Mark Cavendish should leave Team Sky - Bradley Wiggins
Bradley Wiggins thinks fellow Briton Mark Cavendish needs to leave Team Sky to further his career.
Bradley Wiggins“From a selfish point of view, I'd love him to stay.”
With Sky prioritising overall race wins rather than individual stage victories, Wiggins feels Cavendish would achieve more success with another outfit.
"Unfortunately for Mark, the two don't really go well together," said Wiggins. "I enjoy his company but I understand why he has to leave."
Cavendish has just over two years left on his contract with Team Sky.
But Sky boss Dave Brailsford has already said the world road race champion can move on, making it clear that his team are targeting sustained general classification success in the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana over anything else.
Cavendish, 27, is the world's best sprinter, taking his tally of stage wins on the Tour de France to 23 and putting him fourth on the overall list, behind Eddie Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Andre Leducq.
The Isle of Man star also won the green jersey, awarded to the rider who accumulates the highest number of sprint points, on the 2011 Tour.
Cavendish Tour de France wins
- 2008 - four stages
- 2009 - six stages
- 2010 - five stages
- 2011 - five stages
- 2012 - three stages
But his tally of three stage wins this year was his lowest since his abortive Tour debut in 2007 and led to speculation he could quit the team.
As Wiggins claimed an historic victory for Sky, becoming the first Briton to win the prestigious race, Cavendish likened his role to striker Wayne Rooney playing in defence.
"From a selfish point of view, I'd love him to stay," said Wiggins, adding that if Cavendish is to challenge for the green jersey again he "probably has to go".
Wiggins will return to competitive action in the Tour of Britain next month after taking gold in the Olympic time trial at London 2012.

Add to that Paris Roubaix (I laughed) Boonan 1 minute up the road and 4 Sky riders in chasing group including Bogan - Hassan and Flecha, Sky tatic leave it to 1 rider Stannard to chase Boonan...guess what he never caught Boonan

well said Fredo
I said before Sky involvement is the worse thing to happen to cycling, next thing you we will be like football pay per view etc Sky undermined riders contracts greedy wigo sold out his Garmin contract for a pocket full of cash. Sky have often failed to lead out Cav especially Giro leaving him isolated

To add to 135 & 137 - Cav knew that he would not be challenging for the green jersey or stages as much as hew would have liked when joining Sky. However, re-watch the stages in which Wiggins, already in yellow, was leading him out to go for stage wins...Cav wasn't stabbed in the back and we all got to see how a cycling team works perfectly. Time for him to move undoubtedly, but with fond memories

Cav should move. Unlike others I do not believe Cav really cares about the green jersey. That is not his goal. His goal is to beat Mercx's record of 34 stage wins. To do that he needs to be winning 4 stages+ per TdF. He only won 3 this year. In a sprinter based team he would have won 5.
Sagan is a real good sprinter, but Cav is clearly a lot faster

135....cav stabbed In the back by greedy sky...I think you might find the 2mill contract he signed means he is more than compensated. it's not all about the tdf as the team was built around cav for giro..and he admitted this year was all about the Olympic road race and chances were he would pull out the tdf before the mountains. He will move on but will have to take a pay drop.
