Close, day two: Durham 338 & 16-0 v Lancashire 266
Durham 6pts, Lancashire 5pts
Durham took charge on day two of their Division One match with Lancashire, despite an impressive 86-run debut from Australia international Usman Khawaja.
Paul Coughlin (85) and Phil Mustard (70) took their ninth-wicket stand to 150, a new Durham record, as the home side were eventually dismissed for 338.
Khawaja led Lancashire's reply but his departure sparked a collapse of eight wickets for 61 runs in 28.5 overs.
Coughlin's dream debut
As well as sharing a county-record ninth-wicket stand, Paul Coughlin's 85 against Lancashire is the highest score made by a number 10 batsman for Durham in first-class cricket.
Coughlin, who is making his Championship debut, passed the previous mark set by Simon Brown, who made 69 against Leicestershire in 1994.
They went from 205-2 to 266 all out, before Durham closed on 16-0.
Mustard and Championship debutant Coughlin had rescued Durham from a difficult position with their defiant partnership on day one.
The pair surpassed the previous county record of 127, set by David Ligertwood and Simon Brown in 1996, in the first over of Monday's play.
Tom Smith ended Coughlin's innings 15 runs short of a century, before Mustard edged behind to Jos Buttler off the bowling of Kyle Hogg (6-70).
Lancashire lost opener Paul Horton early on but Khawaja, who has joined the Red Rose for the remainder of the 2014 season, enjoyed profitable partnerships with Alex Davies (46) and Ashwell Prince (49) to put the visitors in a strong position.
However, Coughlin (3-42), Ben Stokes (3-97) and John Hastings (3-45) all struck in the final session to put the the reigning Division One champions in control.
Durham openers Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings survived the final four overs to give the home side a lead of 88 heading into day three.
BBC Newcastle's Martin Emmerson:
"Just before tea there was no sign of the chaos to come, but Lancashire collapsed spectacularly as they lost their last eight wickets for 61 runs.
"The spell began just before tea when debutant Paul Coughlin took the wicket of Usman Khawaja for 86.
"Khawaja had put on 111 for the third wicket with Ashwell Prince, who went shortly after that for 49, one of three wickets for Coughlin.
"It's been a dream debut for the 21-year-old from Sunderland. He also took a catch and made 85, the highest score by a Durham number 10, while breaking the club record for a ninth-wicket stand as he and Phil Mustard put on 150."
BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read:
"Lancashire were going along nicely this afternoon at 205-2 with debutant Usman Khawaja and Ashwell Prince batting beautifully, but Khawaja's dismissal sparked a collapse which has put Durham in the driving seat.
"Losing 7-53 after tea means Lancashire are up against it. Durham bowled superbly in the final session and have made that record ninth-wicket partnership between Phil Mustard and Paul Coughlin look even more impressive."
