Match scorecard

William Porterfield made his first Championship century for Warwickshire as further rain at Edgbaston left little chance of a positive outcome to the Bears' home game against Somerset.

Resuming on 78-1 after a delayed start, the Bears reached 294-5, still 117 in arrears, before an early finish.

Ireland captain Porterfield plundered 118, his first Championship ton in four summers, backed by Ian Westwood (99).

  • William Porterfield made his highest score in the County Championship since his 175 for Gloucestershire against Worcestershire at Cheltenham in July 2010.

The ex-Bears skipper shared a second-wicket stand with Porterfield of 163.

In only his second first-class match, teenager Sam Hain then made 32, following up his useful 42 on his debut against Middlesex earlier this month, helping Porterfield put on a further 87 for the third wicket.

Porterfield's departure, leg before wicket to Craig Overton, was followed by the loss of two more wickets just after the follow-on target had been reached.

Peter Trego had Hain taken at mid-wicket before Overton nipped in for a third wicket, removing Ateeq Javid cheaply.

BBC Radio Somerset's Stephen Lamb:

"The new ball provided the most productive moments of the day for Somerset, as Warwickshire's imposing total of 290-2 became 294-5.

"Craig Overton provided further evidence of his graduation as a first-class cricketer. Having accounted for William Porterfield, he concluded a stern examination of Ateeq Javid's technique by having him caught at first slip.

"With Peter Trego snaring teenager Sam Hain, Somerset were scenting a second bowling point when rain forced another early finish.

"But, given the state of the game, and the weather forecast, it is hard to envisage a result."
