Derbyshire: Albie Morkel keen to pass on Twenty20 experience

Derbyshire all-rounder Albie Morkel hopes his experience can rub off on his new team-mates and improve their record in Twenty20 cricket.

The 32-year-old has been a regular in the Indian Premier League with Chennai Super Kings, as well as at international level with South Africa.

However, his new club have only reached the quarter-finals once in 10 seasons.

"Hopefully I can have a bit of impact on the mindset of the players," Morkel told BBC Radio Derby.

Morkel is joined at the County Ground by another former Durham player in Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

The West Indian batsman is available for all three competitions, while Morkel will only feature in T20.

He added: "I'm here to enjoy myself - hopefully the boys will support me and we'll have some fun on the field."

Morkel has built a big-hitting reputation on his habit for boundaries, smashing 168 sixes and 194 fours in 224 domestic T20 matches - but as an all-rounder also hopes to have an impact with the ball.

"I want to contribute with the ball where I can but with my batting I want to help win some games for the team," he continued.

"That is my strength, with my batting I can take the game away from other teams, and that's how I'll approach this tournament."

"I'm just going to play with freedom and enjoy myself."

BBC Radio Derby will have live ball-by-ball commentary of every Derbyshire Twenty20 game on 1116 AM and the BBC Sport website.
