Durham togetherness has been crucial - Scott Borthwick

Spinner Scott Borthwick says Durham's team spirit has been vital to their early-season rise to the top of the County Championship table.

Monday's five-wicket victory against Surrey at the Oval took them to the summit and was their third victory in five this year.

"We're buzzing in the dressing room," Borthwick told BBC Newcastle.

"Everyone is backing each other. It's a good place to be at the moment and hopefully we can kick on."

Borthwick, 23, posted career-best figures in the match, with 6-70 in the second innings - part of an 8-92 tally.

After a winter touring with the England Lions in Australia, the Sunderland-born leg-spinner has returned to the county game and played a key role in wins at Nottinghamshire and now Surrey.

"I got into some nice rhythm when I bowled and picked up a couple of wickets," he added.

"It was nice to finish Surrey off and then get the fantastic win."
