1824:
So, that's it from us for the group stage - Stephan Shemilt will be in the live text chair on Thursday and I'll hope you'll join him to kick off the Super Eights. Until then, Pakistan fans can dream of a repeat of their victory at the 2009 final at Lord's while Bangladesh, I'm afraid, must go back to the drawing board. Thanks for your company today. Sam Sheringham's report of today's match is already there for your perusal. Enjoy the rest of your evening.
-
1820:
A beaming Imran Nazir is man of the match - and we're all lined up now for the Super Eights. The Pallekele-based group starts on Thursday with Sri Lanka v New Zealand and England v West Indies, with the Colombo-based group beginning on Friday featuring Pakistan v South Africa and Australia v India as its opening morsels. Not to forget the women's tournament which starts in Galle tomorrow morning with Sri Lanka v South Africa.
-
Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez: "A great team effort, Bangladesh played well but our batting was good. Imran Nazir was exceptional tonight, we always need a good start when we're chasing, Imran is playing very well at the moment, as is Nasir Jamshed. We've had a good time here, playing positively and hopefully we will do better in the Super Eights."
-
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim: "The boys really worked hard and were keen to perform well, our bowlers did not bowl well in the channel but I think we can take some positives out and work on some things. We are not used to playing on this sort of wicket so we will work on that."
-
IlyasNajib on Twitter: "Nasir Jamshed reminds me of Adam Gilchrist, if Nasir is half as good as Gilly then Pakistan have found a gem!"
-
1811:
TMS are going off air, but a quick reminder that they have commentary on every game of the men's tournament from now on - every single Super Eights game, as well as the semi-finals and finals of the women's tournament. And we'll be here on the live text every step of the way too. Stay tuned for the presentations...
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"They'll be happy at ICC HQ that the top eight teams have qualified - the most threatening of all the associates in the games they played, was Afghanistan in that game against India. Pakistan look in fine fettle, Pallekele looks a nice venue - there should be some terrific cricket here and a lot of runs. You've got a couple of appetising games here on Thursday with Sri Lanka against New Zealand - is it time for New Zealand to win a trophy? - and then England against West Indies. I think England will play three seamers and two spinners, they've now got to work out which ones to pick."
-
18.4 overs:Pkn 178-2 - WIN BY EIGHT WICKETS
Kamran pokes a single past the bowler Shafiul Islam, leaving Jamshed the chance to apply the coup de grace - with four needed, he can only help a single off his legs. Kamran plays and misses, umpire Gould wiggles his hand as if to indicate that was close to being called a wide - and the next delivery is called as wide, for height. Two needed from nine balls, the field comes up and Kamran smashes a four back past the bowler as Pakistan win by eight wickets with eight balls to spare. It's their highest run chase in T20 internationals.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"You wouldn't have picked out Imran Nazir as one of the most dangerous batsmen before this tournament."
-
18 overs:Pkn 171-2 (TARGET 176)
Can Pakistan do it this over? Razzak's back for his fourth over, Jamshed and Kamran help themselves to four singles, leaving themselves six to win. Kamran has a cheeky grin on his face, taking a single off the last ball - will he finish the game in style? Five needed from 12 balls.
-
Danyal Stark on Twitter: "If Umar Gul sorts his bowling out, Pakistan are favourites."
-
17 overs:DROPPED CATCH- Pkn 167-2 (TARGET 176)
Mahmudullah back into the attack with Pakistan needing 26 from 24 balls to win the match outright, even though as we've mentioned, they've now qualified for the Super Eights. After a couple of singles, Jamshed blasts another four aslong the ground through cow corner, and then unleashes an almighty shot towards the long-on boundary, this is six or out, the catch is taken... but sub fielder Farhad Raza can't hold on before he steps on the boundary rope and drops the ball, before sheepishly signalling "six" to the umpire. A leg bye puts Kamran on strike, he swipes a four through third man and Pakistan now need nine from 18 balls.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"Bangladesh have bowled some rubbish tonight, I'm afraid - both spinners and seamers alike. I like the look of Jamshed, I'd like to see a bit more of him."
-
16 overs:Pkn 150-2 - QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS
Jamshed smears Abul Hasan for four through backward point like a man smearing, er, jam on a sandwich. In a shed. The left-hander, who's wielding a mighty railway sleeper of a bat, hoists a massive six halfway up the grass bank - that's six on any ground - and Pakistan have qualified for the Super Eights. A single takes him to 15 from seven balls, Kamran clips a four off his legs before blasting a juicy pie of a short delivery through the covers. Only going one way, this game...
-
Akhil Sharma on Twitter: "Pakistan looking like a real force. Would be very difficult to beat if they carry this form into the next stage of the tournament."
-
15 overs:Pkn 131-2 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Kamran Akmal is indeed the new batsman, Bangladesh have kept faith with Shakib's left-arm spin for the last of his four-over stint. Jamshed and Kamran push five successive singles, Kamran pushes the last ball defensively and although they need 45 from 30 balls to win the match, they only need nine from 30 to reach the Super Eights.
-
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special"Kamran Akmal used to be a good wicketkeeper who batted, but I think he's in the side more for his batting now."
-
Prakash Wakankar, BBC Test Match Special"Two wickets in the over, but it looks like too little, too late."
-
14 overs:WICKET- Hafeez c Mushfiqur b Abul Hasan 45 (Pkn 126-2 - NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
A useful man to have coming it at number three in this situation is the left-handed Nasir Jamshed, who hit an assured half century in the win over New Zealand - he and Hafeez add a couple of singles before Hafeez departs when he nicks one behind.
-
13.3 overs:WICKET- Nazir c sub (Farhad Raza) b Abul Hasan 72 (Pkn 124-1 - NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Abul Hasan back into the attack, Bangladesh are ringing the changes with their bowling but Nazir continues his assault with a four bludgeoned through mid-wicket, before another big blast back past the bowler brings him two. But this great opening stand is finally ended as a tired-looking Nazir holes out to substitute fielder Farhad Raza at long-off for a fluent 72 from 36 balls.
-
Shohidur Rahman on Twitter: "Dear Umpire, please just stop the match now to avoid another humiliating defeat. This is hard to watch."
-
13 overs:Pkn 118-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Shakib back on from the other end as Mushfiqur rotates his bowlers. Hafeez has been playing the supporting role here, but he's still bouncing along at a run a ball, the Pakistan pair are happy to push ones and twos this over and Hafeez has 44 from 45 balls, while Nazir has 66 from 33. And Prakash and Ramiz on TMS have noticed that Shakib is still unhappy with Abul Hasan for what he perceived as that fielding lapse a couple of overs ago.
-
Prakash Wakankar, BBC Test Match Special"Pakistan have always been entertainers, there's just sometimes been a question about their temperament."
-
12 overs:Pkn 112-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Hafeez flicks Razzak for four past the diving mid-wicket fielder, to the delight of a Pakistan fan in some kind of a dark green superhero outfit (like a Pakistan version of "The Incredibles" if you remember them), then slams another four through the leg side as Razzak bowls too short again. Three more singles mean it's 11 from the over, and it won't be too long before I have to remove the "need 140 to qualify for the Super Eights" from the top of each over.
-
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special"When you have someone like Imran Nazir opening the innings when he's in this kind of form, he's a match-winner."
-
11 overs:Pkn 101-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
As Vic Marks on TMS suggests teams like Bangladesh could be called "outsiders" rather than "minnows", some very excited Pakistan fans are forming a human pyramid on one of the grassy bank. Careful there, chaps... Off-spinner Mahmudullah is Bangladesh's sixth bowler, Hafeez plunders a two and a single, Nazir blasts yet another four through the covers and a single brings up the century partnership - it's the first three-figure stand of the tournament. Hafeez nicks the strike with a leg bye.
-
Dr Simon Heap on Twitter: "Bangladesh are the tilapia of world cricket; just don't mention spin fishing to England."
-
10 overs:Pkn 92-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Once more the umpires have to "shoo off" some 12th men bringing gloves and drinks out to the middle - Shakib replaces fellow SLA bowler Razzak in the attack but that's a horrid delivery as a rank half-tracker is launched for six over mid-wicket - that's fifty for Nazir from 25 balls, and it's the fastest half century at this tournament, quicker by one ball than Chris Gayle's against Australia. Nazir hoists a single towards the cover sweeper, and Shakib goes absolutely mental at the fielder who he thinks could have made an attempt to catch it - he'd have needed to be Superman to get that one, but it doesn't stop Shakib chuntering like Graeme Swann does whenever a fielder dares to be anything less than perfect off his bowling. A single takes Hafeez to 29, Nazir has 56 and this is a cake walk for Pakistan.
-
From Javed Hason, TMS inbox: "Re: Chris Jones (8 overs). But they should not be minnows. They are a Test nation and after so many years Sri Lanka had already won a World Cup."
-
9 overs:Pkn 84-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
While Aggers is unhappy with the number of times drinks are being brought on, for what is supposed to be a quick 20-over innings (with the 12th man bringing a fielding helmet on and off being an excuse for drinks coming on, which inevitably waste time), right-arm seamer Abul Hasan is on as Bangladesh's fifth bowler. But once more Bangladesh bowl a bouncer which is smacked by Nazir for a first-bounce four. Nazir, on 49, tries to poke a single but a fumble behind the stumps by Cap'n Mushfiqur allows them to run a bye. Hafeez, playing the supporting role here, adds a two, and is then rather unimpressed when "Gunner" Gould doesn't signal a wideish delivery outside off stump as a wide.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"They're trying to bring more drinks on now, and Ian Gould's told them to get off. This has got to stop."
-
From David in Spain, TMS inbox: "Talking about the days when everybdy was kung-fu fighting (3 overs), anyone remember the Concert for Bangladesh (c.1972/3)? - I reckon the Tigers might need Joe Cocker in his two roles here: to bring in 'a little help from his friends' - and to throw the kitchen sink at Pakistan."
-
8 overs:Pkn 77-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Aggers and Vic on TMS inspect their copy of the team lists exchanged by the captains before the toss - apparently Mushfiqur Rahim's writing is all over the place ("Graphologists would have a lot of fun with that," notes Vic), while Mohammad Hafeez's is a little neater. Nazir and Hafeez exchange singles against Razzak, Nazir hoists his sixth four of the day over extra cover, before a two and a single take him to 45 from 20 balls.
-
Chris Jones on Twitter: "Regardless of the result Bangladesh have been the best if the minnows."
Or, as Ralph Brooker suggested below, the best 'perch'? Tweet us with the hashtag #bbccricket to have your say
-
7 overs:APPEAL - NOT OUT- Pkn 68-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
It's left-arm spin from both ends as Shakib Al Hasan, fresh from his batting heroics, is into the attack. Big appeal from Shakib off the first ball... not out is umpire Ian Gould's response but once again, the ball-tracker replay shows the ball hitting the stumps. Ouch. Nazir and Hafeez help themselves to three singles, while a wide also advances the score. Never mind the 140 target to reach the Super Eights, Pakistan look well on course for the 176 to win this game outright.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"Drinks are coming on for the batsmen... this shouldn't happen. Umpire Gould is getting twitchy, these games need to be played in the time allocated."
-
Ralph Brooker on Twitter: "Re: 1st over. How about referring to the associates as 'perch' or 'tench'? Bigger than minnows but not as big as pike."
-
6 overs:Pkn 64-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
The left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak is summoned to stem the flow of boundaries - we're still in powerplay, so he has his two permitted boundary riders at long-off and deep backward square leg. Razzak bowls a little short, but foxes Hafeez for a couple of deliveries, and when he tries to pierce the off-side field, there's a superb stop by Nasir Hossain at backward point which restricts them to a single. But Razzak lets himself down with a long-hop which Nazir blasts over point for a four which has a few Pakistan fans in the crowd waving their flags and high-fiving. A single takes him to 35 from 13 balls.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"Pace off the ball would not be a bad plan here. You have to use the bouncer as a real shock tactic, as once the batsmen get used to it they're really middling it."
-
5 overs:Pkn 58-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Mortaza's still in the attack for his fourth over, but Bangladesh are leaking boundaries like a colander leaks water here, as Hafeez aims a lofted off-drive for four. He has 22 from 18 balls. Hafeez rotates the strike with a single, before Nazir stands tall and bashes another first-bounce four wide of mid-off. That's the fifty stand, and Nazir moves to 30 from 11 balls with a brutal hook for six.
-
Shohidur Rahman on Twitter: "Awful over from Shafiul. That's the over that's eliminated us from the tournament."
-
Dr Simon Heap on Twitter: "Really looking forward to Pakistan on 139-1 after 19.5 overs! The tournament needs such a cataclysmic climax!"
-
4 overs:APPEAL - NOT OUT- Pkn 43-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
We haven't had many lbw appeals at all today, apart from that one against Ashraful in the first over of the Tigers innings, but the umpire shakes his head when Hafeez is hit on the pad. No DRS in this tournament, and Hafeez might consider himself fortunate as the ball-tracker shows the ball clipping leg stump, although had DRS been running, it may well have been "umpire's call". He pushes the score along with a single, Nazir stands-and-delivers with a flat-batted smack over mid-off for a flat, first-bounce four that nearly went for six. Shafiul pings in a bouncer which swings in after it bounces and disappears for five wides as the diving keeper Mushfiqur can only get a fingertip (or rather a glove-tip) to it. Nazir makes it 13 runs from two legal deliveries as he dismissively hooks Shafiul for four, before the last ball sits up nicely for Nazir to smack it over mid-wicket for six! Twenty from the over. Time for spin?
-
Chris Brown on Twittter: "Boom Boom to do exactly that and finish this well inside the time. Shame as Bangladesh played well apart from 'that' catch."
-
3 overs:Pkn 23-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Hafeez fluently cover-drives Mortaza for four, with the sort of "expert timing" displayed by those cats who were fast as lightning, back in the day when everybody was kung-fu fighting. Play is held up by a chap walking in front of the sightscreen, Hafeez tips-and-runs a single, but a quieter over.
-
Marc Holland on Twitter: "Great stuff from Bangladesh. Unfortunately after NZ display they've left themselves with too much to do."
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"A bit of good fortune for Pakistan so far, with a dropped catch and a mis-hit for four. Their first target must be that 140."
-
2 overs:DROPPED CATCH- Pkn 18-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Shafiul Islam takes the second over so it's right-arm seam from both ends, Nazir miscues it towards mid-on and is dropped by Abul Hasan running round from wide mid-on with his hands above his head ("not as easy as Tanvir's drop, but you should catch those at this level" notes Vic Marks on TMS). The reprieved Nazir runs a single, Hafeez helps himself to two before whipping a single off his legs. Nazir comes down the track trying to heave Shafiul to leg, but the ball scoots off an edge and beats the deep backward square leg fielder for four.
-
Callum Hilton on Twitter: "Can't see Pakistan losing this now, 140 is a easy total with the likes of Akmal and Afridi."
-
1 over:Pkn 10-0 (NEED 140 TO QUALIFY FOR SUPER EIGHTS)
Captain Mohammad Hafeez gets Pakistan under way against the right-arm paceman Mashrafe Mortaza (who's one of a number of ex-skippers in the Bangladesh side), edging the first ball of the innings for four past the solitary slip. The third ball follows a similar route, that's a slightly more deliberate guide to third man for four. A single brings his partner Imran Nazir on strike, he's off the mark with a single.
-
James Walker on Twitter: "Bang 175-6 not bad. now can they do it with the ball? Show that the minnows can come good if they keep playing the big guns."
Don't call them minnows, or Ireland's Trent Johnston (who doesn't like the term) may come round your house and ask you not to!
-
1640:
And there's barely time to draw breath before the dark green-clad Pakistan openers stride to the crease. I repeat: although Pakistan need to score 176 to win, they need to score 140 to reach the Super Eights.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"Someone really needs to have a look at these over-rates. Ten minutes between innings is no amount of time to prepare here."
-
1638:
We've got a swift turnaround here - although the discrepancy between the prize money for the men's and women's tournaments has been brought to light, England women's coach Mark Lane is telling Alison Mitchell on TMS that it's not an issue for his squad. But captain Charlotte Edwards has called on the ICC to look at the discrepancy between the living allowance (men receive £61 per day, women £37) after the tournament. You can read more on the BBC Sport website, which also has a tournament guide we've published today.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"There were some eccentric bits of cricket from Pakistan with Tanvir dropping one of the worst catches you'll ever see and Umar Gul conceding 33 from three overs. The stadium looks terrific and the pitch looks terrific for 20 overs. The whole is thing is making me think I'm quite looking forward to this week in Pallekele."
-
1632:
So, Pakistan need to score 176 to win the match, but need to score 140 to reach the Super Eights.
-
20 overs:WICKET- Nasir Hossain b Arafat 16 (Ban 175-6)
New man Ziaur Rahman is off the mark with a single, Nasir cuts anotehr boundary but steps back and is bowled by the last ball of the innings.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"Shakib's going to have to bowl well now, if he's got enough energy to do so."
-
19.3 overs:WICKET- Shakib c U Akmal b Arafat 84 (Ban 175-6)
Yasir Arafat to bowl the last over. Shakib can only manage a single off the first ball, Nasir rotates the strike again, then Shakib's brave knock is ended as he holes out to Umar Akmal at long-on... or does he? It's not a no-ball, but it was a full toss, is it over waist height? A replay shows no - so that's the end of Shakib after 84 from 54 balls.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"Pakistan will still be favourites to qualify, but this certainly gives Bangladesh a chance."
-
19 overs:Ban 168-4
Nasir does his job, steering Ajmal for a single to get Shakib on strike, the left-hander pushes a two to long-on before flicking a three down to fine leg as Imran Nazir gives chase and makes a sprawling stop on the boundary. Nasir rotates the strike again with a leg bye, Shakib moves to 83 with a single and what can Nasir do with the last ball of the over? He can spank it for four through extra-cover, that's what - ideal as it keeps Shakib on strike for the last over.
-
18 overs:Ban 156-4
Umar Gul back into the attack, Shakib steps across and nudges a four off his legs, he tries another scoop shot as he walks across but gets an inside edge end it reaches the keeper on the bounce. A two takes him to 69, before he crashes a first-bounce four over square leg - his 73 is now the highest score by a Bangladesh batsman in a World Twenty20 tournament. Just for good measure, he cracks another four through the covers - 77 from 49 balls, a superb knock. How much of the strike can he get in the last two overs?
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"This will be strange for Pakistan as they don't have to win to qualify, but if they lose a couple of early wickets, do they go for it or just try to make sure they don't lose by more than 36?"
-
From Andy in Kent, TMS inbox: "Well, well, well! Has my pep talk [1446] done the job for Shakib? Come on lad… need to go bigger!"
-
17 overs:Ban 142-4
Saeed Ajmal back into the attack, Aggers on TMS thinks he'll bowl overs 17 and 19 to complete his spell. Nasir clubs a two down to Umar Akmal, who's patrolling down in the deep at long-on, before the right-hander runs a cheeky single, dropping the ball at his feet before scampering through to get Shakib on strike. Some fans in the crowd hold up a large toy dinosaur, who may even be Godzilla himself (or, for copyright reasons, another dinosaur who just looks a bit like Godzilla). Just ones and twos for Bangladesh this over, six from it.
-
16 overs:DROPPED CATCH- Ban 136-4
Bit of a debate here over whether the batsmen had crossed at the time the catch was taken - umpire Ian Gould notices that they hadn't. (If Mahmudullah were aiming for a baseball-style "sacrifice fly" to get Shakib on strike, he shouldn't have dawdled in attempting a single!). So it's new batsman Nasir Hossain to face - he steers his first ball for a single. Shakib moves to 61 with a single, Nasir gets a nick to a leg break and is dropped by Kamran "Old Iron Gloves" Akmal behind the stumps. He skies the last ball into the air but it falls safely into the leg side and they run one. Nasir has two from three balls, Shakib has 61 from 41. Afridi finishes with a tidy 1-20 from his four overs.
-
15.2 overs:WICKET- Mahmudullah c U Akmal b Afridi 0 (Ban 133-4)
Afridi in for his last over, right-hander Mahmudullah faces for the first time and launches his second ball straight down long-on's throat.
-
15 overs:Ban 133-3
Mahmudullah is the new batsman, but he's not on strike as they crossed on the catch - Shakib hoists a first-bounce four over extra cover.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"If the ball had been bowled from the other end, that ball would have gone over the boundary, although that won't be much consolation to Mushfiqur. Bangladesh need to give Shakib the strike here."
-
14.4 overs:WICKET- Mushfiqur c Nazir b Arafat 25 (Ban 129-3)
Hafeez reminds TMS commentator Prakash Wakankar of a traffic policeman in Delhi, the way he's waving his arms around to direct the field. Mushfiqur and Shakib keep chipping away with singles, then Pakistan finally make the breakthrough as Mushfiqur hooks towards the long boundary and picks out Imran Nazir running round from mid-wicket.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"If the weather stays good up here in the hills, we could see some big scores as the ball's flying off the bat here. Let's hope we see some close games."
-
Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore: "The pitch looks a really good one, but we've been a little bit naughty with our length. There are two halves to the game so we can come back. We're trying to get a bit more consistency in our game but at the moment we're a little bit up and down."
-
14 overs:Ban 127-2
A chance for fourth ump Richard Kettleborough to get on the field, as he brings on a smart black briefcase with some replacement balls, while Pakistan take the opportunity for an IPL-style "time-out" as Hafeez gives his fielders a brief pep-talk. Afridi is back on from the commentary box end, Shakib adds a single before Mushfiqur prods the ball into the covers and clearly has no intention of running, but that doesn't stop non-striker Shakib running at least halfway down the pitch, before having to turn sharply and regain his ground. Having "done" Tamim Iqbal earlier in this innings, Vic Marks on TMS mischievously asks what Shakib would be like batting with Nasser Hussain... Afridi bowls another wide, Mushfiqur pulls a shorter delivery for four, and three more singles mean it's nine off the over.
-
13 overs:DROPPED CATCH- Ban 118-2
Yasir Arafat is Pakistan's sixth bowler, a right-arm seamer familiar from his many stints in English county cricket, Mushfiqur top-edges the ball into the air, it spoons up and Sohail Tanvir drops an absolute dolly of a catch at short mid-wicket! Reminds me of a catch Andrew Strauss (remember him?) dropped while playing for Middlesex in the ill-fated Stanford week in Antigua four years ago. Even a village cricketer would be embarrassed to have dropped that one. Heck, even I'd have hoped to take that one... Anyway, they run a single. Shakib makes Arafat pay with a four over the keeper's head as Arafat attempts a bouncer, then another glorious six over mid-wicket to bring up his half century from 33 balls. More great fielding from Afridi, he dives full-length to turn a likely four into a single.
-
12 overs:Ban 106-2
Shakib tries to steer Ajmal through third man, but is denied by a great stop by the diving Afridi at backward point. Ajmal needs to put the brakes on here, after a couple of singles Shakib aims another big blast through mid-wicket, the ball takes the top edge and sails into the air over the bowler's head but falls safely and they run one. Mushfiqur runs a leg bye, then Shakib swings and misses at the last ball, and Kamran Akmal whips the bails off for good measure, even though the batsman hadn't left his crease. I'm surprised Kamran isn't wearing a helmet to stand up to the stumps, considering that nasty eye injury which befell Mark Boucher and ended his career earlier this year.
-
11 overs:Ban 102-2
Gul replaces Afridi, Mushfiqur pushes his side along with a single before Shakib goes for the big one with a short-arm heave over mid-wicket for the 82nd six of the tournament. (Or rather, it says 82 on the television graphics, but 81 on the scoreboard at the ground. One of them may be right). Gul's not really on his game here, no sign of his unplayable toe-crunching yorkers Shakib slices another four through gully before flat-batting a single past the bowler. "You know a bowler is in trouble when he's asking the umpire how many balls are left," notes former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja on TMS.
Remember, Bangladesh need to win by 36 runs or more to progress to the Super Eights at Pakistan's expense on net run-rate.

-
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special"Pakistan are the heavyweights, they've not been beaten by Bangladesh in an international for 13 years [since the 1999 World Cup] but it means Bangladesh have nothing to lose."
-
10 overs:Ban 90-2
Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal into the attack as Pakistan's fifth bowler. Not only is he the all-time leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 internationals with 64 victims, England fans may shudder at the mere mention of his name after he had most of their batsmen on toast in that Test series in the UAE at the start of this year. Shakib and Mushfiqur plunder a couple of singles and a two, then Shakib aims a bloodthirstly slog-sweep and gets a bottom edge between keeper Kamran Akmal's legs for four. A firmly-struck four through extra cover means the Tigers are still on course for an imposing score.
-
Hiba Siddiqi on Twitter: "Re: 4th over - looks like Tanvir needs to be criticized before every ball, so that he doesn't go for a boundary every time!"
-
9 overs:Ban 78-2
The bearded Afridi, soon to be back in action for Hampshire in the Champions League, is quickly through his overs. Mushfiqur slashes a well-run three down to third man, Shakib manages a single but Afridi otherwise keeps them tied down.
-
8 overs:Ban 74-2
Hafeez has changed ends, and after dabbing a two, Mushfiqur unleashes a massive slog-sweep over mid-wicket and it goes for six - a great hit by the little keeper. A single takes him to 11 from eight balls, Shakib has 17 from 16.
-
7 overs:Ban 65-2
As Aggers notices well-known Pakistan fan Chacha in the crowd - a colourful, bearded figure who seems to turn up wherever in the world they're playing and cheer them on - Shahid Afridi is into the attack with his rather fast leg breaks. Mushfiqur is off the mark with a single, the left-handed Shakib - who passed 1,000 runs in all Twenty20 cricket (as opposed to just T20 internationals) in that last over - rotates the strike with another. Afridi spins down a wide, we've had a few of those today, but only one more single means it's four from Afridi's over, which he'd probably have settled for.

Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"That was a real self-inflicted wound for Bangladesh, Tamim was going really well with 24 from 12 balls."
-
6 overs:Ban 61-2
Captain Mushfiqur Rahim in for the final ball of the powerplay, a chastened Shakib can't get it away.
-
5.5 overs:WICKET- Tamim run out 24 (Ban 61-2)
Tanvir to bowl the last over of the powerplay, Shakib whacks him for three successive fours, all around the ground, to get the Bangladesh fans in the crowd going - but then there's a mix-up as he calls for a single, the ball goes straight to short mid-wicket, Shakib sends non-striker Tamim back, he slips and is easily run out at the non-striker's end.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"We haven't had any shocks so far in this tournament - might we get one tonight? Bangladesh need a big total here, they need to run by 36 runs or more."
-
From Thomas Brooks, TMS inbox: "Clearly the 'giant, thin inflatable things' are actually 'Wacky, Waving, Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Men'. Tsk."
That's me told...
-
5 overs:Ban 49-1
Gul is taken out of the firing line as his first over cost 17 and Tamim is champing at the bit. Hafeez brings himself back on, he drops the ball as he attempts his first delivery but then drops one short and wide and Tamim gives it the treatment, slashing a four past backward point. He must be a difficult man to set a field to in a powerplay, as he flicks the next ball off his legs for four more. Four more singles off the remaining deliveries mean Tamim has 24 (from 12 balls), Shakib has four, and Bangladesh have posed a few problems here.

4 overs:Ban 37-1
Former captain Ashraful is replaced by former captain Shakib Al Hasan who's in at three so we've got two lefties at the crease. Tanvir strays with another wide, Shakib goes aerial with a chip over extra cover ("possibly a nine-iron," notes Vic on TMS) and they run two. Good recovery by Tanvir, who was clearly stung by our last tweeter...
-
3.2 overs:WICKET- Ashraful b Tanvir 14 (Ban 34-1)
Ashraful joins in the fun with a boundary of his own as he gets an inside edge down to fine leg, but when he aims another big smash, Tanvir has his revenge as Ashraful is bowled.
-
Hiba Siddiqi on Twitter: "I don't know WHY Tanvir is in the team again. So frustrating watching him leak runs."
-
3 overs:Ban 30-0
Right-arm paceman Umar Gul takes the third over. He's bowling a little earlier than he did in the 2009 World Twenty20 in England where he was very much a specialist "death bowler", often coming on as late as the 14th over to bowl the last four overs from one end. (Gul fans can watch his amazing five-wicket haul against New Zealand on the BBC Sport website). But he's not on the money early on against Tamim, who belts a four through mid-wicket, then misses with a cut shot as he steps back but the ball sails between keeper Kamran Akmal and the solitary slip and disappears for five wides. Looking like he's favouring the upper-cut to third man, Tamim misses again, but he then takes advantage when Gul offers a bit of width and slices him over backward point for four, before smacking a bouncer through mid-wicket for his third boundary of the over.

From Jennifer Kavanagh, TMS inbox: "I was in Bangladesh in 1999, and with a group of young and excited Bangladeshis watched World Cup matches on a little black and white TV in a village near Chittagong. The night when Bangladesh beat Pakistan no one went to sleep. Everyone was out on the streets banging saurcepan lids. Come on, Bangladesh!"
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"There was movement there for Tanvir, he bowls chest-on so his natural delivery is to move the ball away from the right-hander."
-
2 overs:Ban 13-0
Tanvir, bowling his left-arm seam over the wicket, opens with a no-ball which Tamim smears to leg for a single. The "free hit" ball is outside off stump but the right-handed Ashraful steps across to scoop it over fine leg for four! It's a "ramp" shot more associated with the likes of Jos Buttler these days - but to be fair to Ashraful, he's been playing it for a few years now, before Buttler came on the scene - and Ashraful's equally adept to get down one knee and "frying-pan" it over his left shoulder in a manner not unlike the Dilscoop. But Tanvir recovers to send down four dot balls, having Ashraful fishing outside off stump on more than one occasion as he gets a bit of seam movement.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"Sohail Tanvir will bowl the second over. He always looks as though he bowls off the wrong foot, although I don't think he does."
-
From Sajad Akram, TMS inbox: "There should have been the incentive for the teams to carry points forward to the Super Eights (from the game versus the other group qualifier). The ICC should look at that for future tournamenents."
-
1 over:Ban 7-0
It's going to be Pakistan T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez to take the new ball with his orthodox right-arm off-spin. He's one of the top-rated bowlers in international limited-overs cricket despite being a batsman who bowls. Tamim Iqbal gets Bangladesh under way with a single. His partner Mohamad Ashraful is hit on the pad as he aims an expansive slog-sweep but when he does connect with the same shot. It skies high into the air but falls safely in front of the deep backward square leg boundary, and trickles over the rope for four. Hafeez moves a fielder there, so Ashraful aims a similar heave to leg, cunningly hitting the ball to where the fielder had just moved from! They run two.
-
Kevin McDonnell on Twitter: "Loving the anthems. Bangladesh's sounds like an 80s American soap theme."
-
1458:
Pakistan's anthem is slightly more melodic than Bangladesh's, which is a little sedate, but the cheers indicate there are clearly more Pakistan fans in the ground than Bangladesh. Although it rained at the ground last night, it's been pretty dry today, and we're all set for Bangladesh's openers to take the field. Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful are both dwarfed by a couple of giant, thin inflatable things with flapping arms, the sort that you occasionally see outside car showrooms (I want to call them "intergalactic proton-powered electrical-tentacled advertising droids", not sure what the proper name for them is). We're ready to rock and roll.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special"I don't know when England would next come here for a Test series, given that they've just been to Sri Lanka earlier this year, but I think the fans would like this ground - there's grass banks where you can sit like you have in New Zealand."
-
1453:
It's also worth mentioning that the Women's World Twenty20 starts tomorrow - all of their group games are in Galle, before they move to Colombo to join the men's tournament where the semi-finals and final are played in parallel - the women's semis and finals are all played just before the men's games, on the same ground. Take a look at our brand-spanking-new women's tournament guide on the BBC Sport website for players to watch and a guide to the team's recent form. Anthem time in Pallekele...
-
From Griffo from Birmingham, TMS inbox: "So Banga need to win by 36 or more. What would have happened if they were batting second?"
If Bangladesh had been chasing, their net run-rate requirement would have depended on the target set. According to Cricinfo, if they'd have been chasing 150, they'd have needed to get them in 15.4 overs or quicker.
-
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special"We might have a shock here - if Tamim Iqbal gets going and Bangladesh managed to score 190, for instance, Pakistan would still need to score 155."
-
1446:
What of England, you may ask? They're heading up to Pallekele, venue not only for today's Pakistan-Bangladesh showdown, but for all of England's three Super Eight games. Craig Kieswetter thinks they need to be "more streetwise" in the second phase, while in the latest daily dose of news about He Who Must Not Be Named, ex-captain Michael Vaughan has called for Kevin Pietersen to be reinstated in the Test squad for India if his issues with the rest of the team and management can be resolved.

1441:GET INVOLVED
While we wait for Test Match Special's coverage to start at 1445 BST, a reminder of how you can get in touch with us today (and we'd particularly like to hear from any Pakistan and Bangladesh fans, wherever you are - or any of you who've been out in Sri Lanka watching the tournament). You can email tms@bbc.co.uk (with "For Mark Mitchener" in the subject line), drop us a text on 81111 or if you're a Twitterer, you can tweet us via the hashtag #bbccricket - we look forward to hearing from you. Can Bangladesh do it?
-
1436:
A statistical note - now they're batting first, we know that Bangladesh must win by 36 runs or more to reach the Super Eights - as if they win by exactly 36, they will have exactly the same net run-rate as Pakistan, but go through as having beaten them head-to-head.
-
1434:
"We are taking this game as a normal game," says Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez, who hopes there's a bit of swing and seam in the pitch for his quicker bowlers. They're unchanged from the side which beat New Zealand.
-
1433:TOSS
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim wins the toss and announces that his side will bat first, they want to post a big target and "put on a big show" in what could be their final game. Abul Hasan replaces Elias Sunny.
-
1432:
As Aggers has alluded to, the situation in Group D is this:
Pakistan will qualify for the Super Eights if they beat Bangladesh (by any margin) today, or if it's a washout, or even if it's a modest win for Bangladesh, which would see Pakistan through ahead of Bangladesh on net run rate.
Bangladesh know that nothing less than a thumping victory will do - they need to overhaul Pakistan on net run rate.
New Zealand have already qualified as no matter what the result of this game, their superior net run rate means Pakistan and Bangladesh cannot BOTH overtake the Kiwis.
-
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match SpecialOn Twitter: "6 hrs in a bus for this match... let's hope it's worth it. Bangladesh need a resounding win over Pakistan to qualify."
-
1430:
Afternoon, everyone. We've reached the final game of the opening group stage of the World Twenty20 - and the only issue to be decided is which of today's competing teams, Pakistan and Bangladesh, will take the final place in the Super Eight phase. Pakistan are favourites to do so... as we'll explain shortly.
