As it happened

  1. 1832:

And if it's an interview with Paul Collingwood, England's World Twenty20-winning captain in 2010, that you're after, then look no further than the BBC Sport website on Thursday morning. Until then...

  2. 1831:

Before we get to Friday, and England's opening game of their title defence, we have South Africa v Zimbabwe for you lucky people tomorrow. Play starts at 1500 BST, with live text commentary and Test Match Special under way, as ever, shortly before.

  3.

The rugged Shapoor Zadran will give more batsmen the hurry-up before this tournament is out, while Dawlat Zadran conceded just 25 runs in four overs against one of the most feared batting line-ups in world cricket.

  4. 1823:

Afghanistan, for their part, will surely rue the four (yes, that's not a typo) chances they put down, reprieving Raina twice and Kohli. Their fielding apart, they acquitted themselves superbly on the grandest stage - and the manner in which they went after India's vaunted bowling attack suggests the reputations of England's bowlers will count for little when the sides meet at this venue on Friday.

  5. 1820:

So India win by 23 runs, a victory margin that doesn't tell the whole story. There were sizeable chunks of that game when they had reason to be mightily worried, especially when messrs Shahzad and Nabi were in full flow. The sparse crowd at the R Premadasa Stadium certainly can't complain at the entertainment on offer, although you suspect India Duncan Fletcher may have a few harsh words for an occasionally sloppy performance from his so-called superstars.

  6.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"I will be looking forward to Friday's game between England and Afghanistan a lot more than the England players I would imagine. There's a lot to be wary off and a lot to admire in this Afghanistan side. Mangal is a class player and and Sidiq impressed me."

  7. 19.3 overs:
INDIA WIN BY 23 RUNS - WICKET- D Zadran b Balaji 8 (Afg 136 all out)

...which is duly completed when Dawlat Zadran is bowled next ball.

  8. 19.2 overs:
    WICKET- Naib c Raina b Balaji 14 (Afg 136-9)

A swiping Naib finally perishes to Balaji as India close in on victory...

  9. 19 overs:
    Afg 136-8 (TARGET 160)

Even a no-ball and free hit come too late to change the course of this match. Naib refuses a single, and when the batsmen finally do change ends, his partner Dawlat Zadran lets him know what he thinks of that with successive fours off Pathan. India a little ragged, to say the least.

  10.

Rob from London, via text on 81111: "We already have Athers (Atherton), Tuffers (Tufnell), Aggers (J.Agnew), so can we call Afghanistan 'Affers'?? Love this effort, brilliant attempt by them today!"

  11. 18 overs:
    Afg 126-8 (TARGET 160)

So that looks like it's about it for this match as a contest as Afghanistan enter the last two overs needing 34 to win.

  12.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"He looks like he can play but has come in lower down the order because of his hamstring injury. It's a sad innings because he played a glorious shot but he's clearly in agony and couldn't run and to cap it all was turned back by his partner having made it halfway down the wicket."

  13. 17.4 overs:
WICKET- N Zadran run out 5 (Afg 125-8)

What theatre we have here. Najibullah Zadran, nursing a hamstring injury sustained in the field, limps to the crease and promptly swats Balaji through cover for four. However, sent back by Gulbodin Naib later in the over, he is run out by Balaji at the non-striker's end despite a desperate dive.

  14. 16.5 overs:
    WICKET- Nabi c Sharma b Ashwin 31 (Afg 119-7)

Now, I realise I've said this before, but surely that's it for Afghanistan? Nabi, India's nemesis, attempts to clear the ropes once more, but succeeds only in finding Rohit Sharma at mid-off. The scorecard reads 119-7 at the end of the over. The odds on scoring 41 off 18 balls anyone?

  15.

We head into the final four overs with Afghanistan needing 44 to pull off one of the greatest upsets in this or any other tournament. They can't, can they...?

  16.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"I have liked the spirit Afghanistan have shown. They are playing in the big time and it's a wonder that they are here at all. But have they got what it takes to get these runs though? It's a terrific atmosphere as Afghanistan dare to hope."

  17. 16 overs:
    Afg 116-6 (TARGET 160)

Nabi almost single-handedly taking the fight to India here. He follows up a glorious six over extra cover off Zaheer (yes, you read that right), with a brace of twos, another four through the leg side, and two singles to end the over. A cracker.

  18. 14.6 overs:
WICKET- Shafiqullah lbw Pathan 8 (Afg 100-6)

They may be faint, but Afghanistan's hopes are still alive. Just. Nabi certainly hasn't given up - Pathan will testify to that as he sees one flashed through the covers. Or should I say 'were' alive. Pathan nips one back to trap Shafiqullah lbw, despite replays showing a blatant inside edge.

  19. 14 overs:
    Afg 93-5 (TARGET 160)

I think Mohammad Nabi realises it's now or never for Afghanistan as he smites Yuvraj back over his head for a glorious straight six. He follows it with a quick-footed pull - a la Michael Clarke - for another maximum over midwicket. Yuvraj's figures ruined somewhat by that over - 13 off it.

  20.
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special

"Afghanistan need a miracle now. They will need to supply some unorthodoxy now. They got India into a bit of trouble at the start with that approach but then lost their way. They need someone to take on this attack."

  21. 12.1 overs:
    WICKET- Shenwari c&b Ashwin 1 (Afg 76-5)

They're falling like autumn leaves here, Shenwari the latest as he offers a rather tame caught and bowled chance to Ashwin. They don't come much easier than that. The over ends with Afghanistan 80-5.

  22.

Rihan Choudhury on Twitter: "If they pull this off, one of the greats shocks in international cricket history."

  23. 12 overs:
    Afg 76-4 (TARGET 160)

The most positive thing to come out of that over for Afghanistan: at least Yuvraj didn't take a hat-trick.

  24.
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special

"Yuvraj has been oustanding on a good batting track. He span that one for his second wicket and has bowled the arm ball intelligengtly as well. He adds to India's strength as a bowling unit and gives the side a good balance. It would have been quite a feat for someone who already has six sixes in an over to have a hat-trick as well."

  25. 11.3 overs:
    WICKET- Stanikzai c Dhoni b Yuvraj 6 (Afg 75-4)

And Yuvraj - who else? - does it again. Stanikzai, on strike after the batsmen crossed the previous ball, is drawn forward by one that did turn. The ball tickles the outside edge and Dhoni makes amends for his blunder the previous over with a smart catch.

  26. 11.2 overs:
    WICKET- Sadiq c Gambhir b Yuvraj 26 (Afg 75-3)

Is that it for Afghanistan's hopes of an upset? Sadiq, who you sense was their last remaining hopes, sweeps straight to Gambhir at deep square-leg.

  27. 11 overs:
MISSED STUMPING- Afg 74-2 (TARGET 160)

Dhoni, the coolest man in cricket, fluffs his lines there. Sadiq on the charge, Ashwin pushes it down the leg side, Sadiq misses, and Dhoni fails to gather with a scrambling Sadiq almost in a different postcode. Will that hurt India as much as those drops did to Afghanistan?

  28. 10 overs:
    Afg 69-2 (TARGET 160)

Sadiq beats backward point with a superbly placed stroke off Yuvraj. As Aggers says on TMS, a "rasping cut behind square". Couldn't put it better myself. A single plus some handy running for a two and Afghanistan are still in the hunt.

  29.

David Ager on Twitter: "Netherlands chased down a target of 163 in 2009, Afghanistan need 160, not impossible. Shame they dropped so many too."

  30. 9 overs:
    Afg 62-2 (TARGET 160)

I'm not sure which coaching manual the Afghanis have been reading, but I doubt they stock it in the Lord's shop. It's Sadiq's turn this time, lifting R Ashwin back over his head with all of one hand on the bat. A profitable over for the minnows - eight runs off it - but they need more.

  31. 8 overs:
    Afg 54-2 (TARGET 160)

India needed that. Yuvraj does the trick for Dhoni, and you sense it's getting closer to crunch time in this game as he gives up just two runs off the over.

  32.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"Yuvraj with his very first ball does exactly what the Indian team were hoping for. Mangal hit some very nice shots but that was a slightly frustrating departure because he missed a straight ball."

  33. 7.1 overs:
WICKET- Mangal lbw Yuvraj 22 (Afg 52-2)

Yuvraj strikes with his first ball! The most famous pie-chucking left-armer in cricket sends down a seemingly innocuous delivery from round the wicket, Mangal pushes forward and plays down the wrong line. If there was any turn there I'm a Scotsman (I'm not, by the way), and Simon Taufel raises his finger. Replays suggest it was hitting leg stump.

  34. 7 overs:
    Afg 52-1 (TARGET 160)

At what point do India start to get worried? I suspect Dhoni is the sort of chap who doesn't know the meaning of the word. Maybe a few more of those sort of strokes from Karim Sadiq will change things - a meaty drive that fizzed to long-on's left. Crikey, that was hit hard.

  35. 6 overs:
    Afg 42-1 (TARGET 160)

Mangal ends the sixth over in even more emphatic style, stepping away to leg before hoisting a perfectly reasonable delivery from Balaji over deep midwicket for six, with the bare minimum of follow-through. Leading from the front, as they say.

  36.

Jon Tattz on Twitter: "This is a very gettable target, though not if Afghanistan bat like they fielded."

  37. 5 overs:
    Afg 32-1 (TARGET 160)

So will Afghanistan re-think their tactics? We'll see. Mangal, the skipper, picks up where Shahzad left off - albeit in more orthodax fashion with a flowing cover drive for four off Pathan, back into the attack at the other end. A full extension of the arms and the infield well and truly pierced.

  38.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"England will be making notes - you don't want to give Shahzad too much room but if you can get it chest height he might be vulnerable, something I'm sure the likes of Finn and Broad will take note of. But he's got terrific ambition and has played the shot of the tournament. That 'helicopter' shot will stay with me for quite a while."

  39. 3.5 overs:
    WICKET- Shahzad c Yuvraj c Balaji 18 (Afg 26-1)

The wicket that India wanted. Lakshmipathy Balaji into the attack and Shahzad makes room to swat a short ball. He fails to clear mid-on, where a back-pedalling Yuvraj takes a straightforward catch. Whether the Afghanistan fielders would have held it is another matter... Nawroz Mangal negotiates the one ball remaining in the over.

  40.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"That helicopter shot raced to the boundary, Shahzad timed it perfectly and Dhoni didn't seem that amused. You don't see Dhoni play it that much these days but Shahzad clipped it, somehow, from middle and off and the finish to the stroke that gives it its name was just brilliant. That's the moment of the tournament so far. Looking at the replay Dhoni may have smiled but he didn't want to show it and put his gloves to his face, whereas Shahzad punched the air with joy."

  41. 3 overs:
    Afg 24-0 (TARGET 160)

"Are you Dhoni in disguise?" Out comes the 'helicopter' shot from Shahzad - the India captain would have been proud of that. So much bottom hand in that as he whipped a full-length ball from Zaheer low over midwicket, complete with the twirling follow-through above his head. Thirteen off the over. Wonderful stuff.

  42. 2 overs:
    Afg 11-0 (TARGET 160)

It's Irfan Pathan, looking like he's had a rather heavy night's sleep, from the other end. Stubbled, hair unkempt, sweat glistening on his brow, he gets clobbered wide of mid-on by Shahzad from well outside off stump. Agricultural, I think is the word. Shahzad ends the over with something more akin to a tennis smash than a cricket stroke - and connects only with thin air. Don't bother looking in the MCC coaching manual for that one.

  43. 1 over:
    Afg 4-0 (TARGET 160)

For anyone under any illusions as to how Afghanistan will go about this chase, Mohammad Shahzad flaying Zaheer Khan's first ball over mid-off might give you a clue. And I thought this chap was injured... There are also couple of play and misses in that over, a leg bye and a single to fine-leg.

  44.

From Phil in Cheshire, TMS inbox: "So we have Nabi and Naib in the same team - Any more suggestions of players who are anagrams of another - O'Brien and O'Brien does not count!"

  45.

Having lost their opening game against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe have a massive match against South Africa on Thursday. Whatever happens their coach Alan Butcher is confident the talent pool in Zimbabwe is as good as it has ever been.

"It would definitely help if we played more cricket, especially overseas in different conditions," he told BBC Radio 5 live's Chris Jones. "It's very difficult to get on a roll, while the learning curve of the players keeps getting interrupted.

"We don't play very often unless we come to World Cups. We definitely need to play more cricket and that will help the process of improving the side, although we should have given a better account of ourselves than we did against Sri Lanka."

  46.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"There was a lot of skill from the bowlers - fire from Shapoor Zadran and quite a lot of canniness from the rest. But they've dropped four catches. If that hadn't been the case, India might have been 20 or 30 runs light. I think 159 is going to be enough, but if somebody comes out and plays the innings of his life, then India might be in trouble."

  47.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"Afghanistan made India work hard but it could have been harder. A terrific effort by Afghanistan, let down by their catching."

  48. 1638:

Great effort from Afghanistan, but how they must be rueing those four dropped catches. Word has it some of their boys can give it some humpty though, so all is not lost. I'm going to leave you in the safe hands of Justin Goulding to take you through the Afghan run chase. Adios.

  49. 20 overs:
    Ind 159-5

Nabi bowls a textbook yorker to keep Dhoni at bat. But not for long. the India captain smacks a low full toss down the ground for four then blasts the last ball for six. India finish on 159-5. It should be enough, but let's just wait and see...

  50.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"A quicker ball, and a straighter one. He has done a good job for his team, Raina. It wasn't particularly pretty - but they needed it from him."

  51. 19.2 overs:
    WICKET- Raina b Nabi 38 (Ind 148-5)

Raini clatters Nabi to the long-on boundary then tries to repeat the shot and is bowled.

  52. 19 overs:
    Ind 143-4

Dawlat Zadran gifts India an extra run and ball with a very wide wide. Then a howler as a leg side ball can't be stopped by makeshift keeper Sadiq and runs away for five wides. Dhoni adds to the Afghan pain with a characteristic leg side heave for four as India pick up 12 runs from the penultimate over.

  53. 18 overs:
    Ind 131-4

Terrific shot from Raina as he picks the length early and plants one past deep midwicket for four. But still India can't really light the fireworks as they are kept to singles for the rest of the over. Just two to come now. Would India settle for 150 now?

  54.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"Non-stop music and general noise - it sounds like a children's party here. What are those blowy things with the feather on the end?"

  55. 17 overs:
    Ouch!- Ind 122-4

No helmet for Dhoni, why would he need one? More horrible fielding from Afghanistan as Najibullah Zadran lets a Raina drive slip through his legs on the boundary. Looks like the fielder has done his hamstring too as he limps off over the rope for treatment.

Ouch - this is turning into a bloody old battle. This time Dhoni is in the wars as a Raina drive slaps him in the chest.

  56.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"He took him on but he couldn't quite clear Nabi on the long-off boundary. Under the circumstances that was a damn good catch. Running away to his right, he kept his composure."

  57. 16 overs:
    Ind 115-4

Nabi kissed the flag on his shirt after taking that catch - a slighlty more meaningful gesture than some of the badge-kissing among Premier League footballers I would say. There's a huge cheer for the iconic presence walking out to bat - India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Raina gets a single off the last ball to keep the strike.

  58. 15.4 overs:
    WICKET- Kohli c Nabi b D Zadran 50 (Ind 114-4)

Kohli reaches his fifty off 38 balls then smashes his 39th high into the night sky and, finally, the Afghans take a catch, with Nabi running round from long-off to snaffle the chance on the boundary.

  59.

John from York, via text on 81111: "Truly wanting to be smug, I did warn of this at 17th over of Ireland's innings. Anything can happen in T20 and usually does. Without the drops, Afghanistan would be ahead in this game."

  60.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"The bowling has been high quality, and if the zeal of Afghanistan was translated into their ability to catch, they would be in with a real shout."

  61. 15 overs:
    DROPPED CATCH- Ind 111-3

Leg-spinner Shenwari bowls to Raina, who has a slash and gets a thick outside edge over the infield for four. Oh no, another howler in the field! This time it's the sub fielder Izzat, who grasses the simplest of chances. Costly, costly, costly. Did I say costly?

  62.
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special

"Shapoor Zadran was great with the new ball, but in his second spell he has not been able to deliver those yorkers and the change of pace."

  63. 14 overs:
    Ind 102-3

When in doubt, bring back the big man. Shapoor Zadran, the tall, quick left-armer, comes back for his fourth and final over but Kohli is in the zone now and he finds the boundary again with an inside-out drive over wide of long-off. Signs that Raina has his eye in two as he places a lofted drive for a one-bounce four then pulls a full toss away for another.

It looks like keeper Shahzad's magic spray has worn off and he's hobbling off the pitch now. Karim Sadiq steps in to don the gloves and pads, while Shahzad receives more treatment on the other side of the rope.

  64.

Some reaction coming in on Twitter following Australia's seven-wicket win over Ireland earlier in the day:

Ireland batsman Gary Wilson: "To all our fans, we've started slowly but one thing for sure, we'll keep fighting and working for the windies on Monday. Thanks 4 support."

Australia's David Warner: "Good win today, well played lads. Well done Watto for man of The match!!"

  65.
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special

"This wasn't a difficult catch - he got there - and to add insult to injury it goes for six. The fielder has got to put that out of his mind. This was the most costly of the drops, grassing Virat Kohli."

  66. 13 overs:
    DROPPED CATCH- Ind 88-3

Kohli almost takes Raina's head off with a hammer blow down the ground for four. Then there's another horrible drop as Samiullah Shenwari lets one slip through his fingers at long-on and watches in horror as the ball drops over the rope for six. That's three dropped catches now. If they had stuck, we could have been talking about one of the great upsets.

  67. 12 overs:
    DROPPED CATCH- Ind 75-3

Nabi drops a dolly as Raina prods one straight back at his midriff, but it slips through his hands. The next ball whistles past the outside edge. Drop aside, it's another fantastic over for the Afghans, with only three runs coming from it.

  68.
Prakash Wakankar, BBC Test Match Special

"All of Afghanistan must be glued to their televisions or their radio sets. They're doing their country proud."

  69. 1554:
    Ind 72-3

New man Suresh Raina pushes down the ground for a single, and there are three more from the over. When will India want to get a bit of a jog on?

  70.
Ramiz Raja, BBC Test Match Special

"Yuvraj was looking extremely good - possibly losing his focus there. But good to see him back playing for India."

  71. 10.1:
    WICKET- Yuvraj Singh c S Zadran b Sadiq 18 (68-3)

Yuvraj tries to cut, but it's in the air and is easily caught by Shapoor Zadran at short third man.

  72.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"It's a recovery but it doesn't look like India are set for a really formidable score. It has been an eventful - and extremely impressive - first 10 overs from Afghanistan."

  73.

Emmerson Wood on Twitter: "It's Shapoor start by the Indians. They're Afghani take this slightly more seriously if they want to be true contenders."

  74. 10 overs:
    DROPPED CATCH- Ind 68-2

Two chances from one ball. Mohammad Nabi puts down a tough chance above his head, then picks the ball up and misses with a shy at the stumps that would probably have run him out. I think he's a bit shaken by his double error because he bowls three leg side wides before the over is out.

  75. 9 overs:
    Ind 60-2

Kohli is getting going now, latching on to the off-spinner Sadiq and driving another four down the ground. A full toss to end the over is rather generously treated by Yuvraj, who picks out long on and has to settle for a single. We're almost at the half-way point and I think most people would have expected India to have a few more than 60 on the board.

  76.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"They really are giving it absolutely everything, Afghanistan. It's somewhat frenetic. You feel like something could happen; it's on the edge."

  77. 8 overs:
    Ind 51-2

Yuvraj lifts one cleverly over the infield and they run two. Kohli now, the ball's in the slot and he absoltely slaughters it for a straight six. The fireworks go off in the stand and the camera picks out a trio of Indian women dancing while doing the Usain Bolt sign. Aggers is right, the tournament has really come to life under the lights in Colombo.

  78.

BBC Sport's Nitin Srivasta on Twitter in Colombo: "Yuvi on fire. What a sight to see him blasting the ball to long on and clearing the ropes. #wT20"

BBC Sport's Joe Wilson on Twitter in Colombo: "What a joy to see Yuvraj belting the ball again, seemed very unlikely we'd ever see it again not long ago.."

  79.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"It feels exciting; it looks exciting. This is certainly the most exciting passage of play we've seen in the tournament so far."

  80. 7 overs:
    Ind 41-2

Great to see Yuvraj back where he belongs after almost a year out of the game having treatment for lung cancer. Off-spinner Karim Sadiq is brought into the attack now and the Indian pair work him hither and thither for five singles and a two.

  81.

Nikesh Mistry on Twitter: "I think it's time for Gambhir and Sehwag to pass the reins onto some younger lads. Too many low scores to justify their place."

  82.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"Shapoor Zadran pulls terrific faces as he runs in to bowl. He's very hostile and he's got genuine pace."

  83. 6 overs:
    Ind 34-2

Shapoor Zadran has some serious wheels, at least I think that's the word for it, and this match is well and truly alive. The new bowler is Gulbodin Naib, but he doesn't quite have the same pace as the Zadran's and Kohli has plenty of time to push a perfectly decent ball past cover for four. Yuvraj clips one down the ground but the ball clatters straight into the stumps and denies him runs.

  84.
    5 overs: Ind 29-2

Yuvraj Singh's response to India's shaky start: a glorious straight six off Afghanistan's quickest bowler. Take that. After blocking his first three balls, the left-hander presents his full blade and a wonderfully elegant swing of the bat sends the ball high and very handsome.

  85.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"Shapoor Zadran is the tallest man on the field and he's now standing in the middle of a delighted Afghanistan huddle. It was a beautiful delivery, pitched around off stump, maybe left Sehwag a fraction, and produced a lovely nick - Sehwag was geniunely beaten. What a character this man is already and he's only bowled 13 balls. I think I might sign him for Somerset - I wonder if he's available next summer! He has made a huge impact. I've never seen him before - he reminds me of Goran Ivanisevic the tennis player. He's got the same sort of body and the same sort of passion."

  86. 4.1 overs:
    WICKET- Sehwag c Shahzad b S Zadran 8 (Ind 22-2)

Another wicket for Shapoor Zadran - and it's the big one! Sehwag goes, caught behind aiming a rather leaden-footed push. The big left-armer wheels away in celebration once more. He's certainly livened up the start to this game. Upset, anyone?

  87. 4 overs:
    Ind 22-1

Great over from Dawlat Zadran as he sends down four dots in a row followed by a pair of singles.

  88.

Akhil Sharma on Twitter: "Have lost count of the number of times Gambhir has dragged one onto his stumps and got himself out. Disappointed."

  89. 3 overs:
    Ind 20-1

Here comes my hero Virat Kohli, surely one of the best batsmen in world cricket at the moment. He clubs his first ball to mid-off, refuses the single and Sehwag is almost run out by a direct hit at the non-striker's end. I like the look of this guy Shapoor as he slants one past Sehwag's edge. The next ball undoes the good work, however, as Sehwag whips a leg stump half-volley through midwicket for four. The last ball beats the bat again. Great contest.

  90.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"He has bowled quite a few short deliveries and I think Gambhir was half-expecting another one. He didn't move his feet at all, bat away from body, prodding. It took the inside edge and the middle stump went missing. Shapoor Zadran looks the business to me."

  91. 2.1 overs:
    WICKET- Gambhir b S Zadran 10 (Ind 15-1)

Got him! The ball is just outside off stump, Gambhir dangles the bat and gets an inside edge onto his off stump. Shapoor Zadran sprints off in celebration, wonder in his eyes.

  92. 2 overs:
    Ouch!- Ind 15-0

Gambir gets a leading edge that lands just short of mid-on and would have been run out but for a wayward throw. Dawlat Zadran bowls a tad too straight and Gambhir works him round the corner for the first four of the innings.

Oh dear, keeper Mohammad Shahzad looks in a fair bit of pain at the end of the over as he twists his knee stopping the ball. We've got the physio out applying copious amounts of magic spray and giving him a bit of a massage. Finally he gets to his feet, smiles from ear to ear and trots off to the other end.

  93.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"There's masses of energy out in the field - they're buzzing, this Afghanistan side. Already there has been some brilliant fielding."

  94. 1 over:
    Ouch!- Ind 8-0

Left-arm paceman Shapoor Zadran drops his first ball very short and wide indeed. His second ball is more accurate and Sehwag pushes it through a gap for three. I'll tell you what, these Afghans are certainly enthusiastic. In an attempt to run out Sehwag, the square leg fielder fires the ball past the stumps and is saved the ignominy of four overthrows by a spectacular dive. Zadran's last ball is a 90mph bullet that slaps Gambhir high on the thigh.

  95.

Thomson Mathew on Twitter: "Never underestimate the minnows, especially in T20."

  96. 1500:

Virender Sehwag will face the first ball of the innings and I have a cheeky suspicion he won't be lingering long before giving it some welly.

  97.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"I'm not sure this stadium is in the mood for giant-killing today."

  98. 1456:

National anthems blaring out now. Still plenty of empty seats in the stadium. Personally, I'm looking out for the three fellows who claim to be the only Afghanistan fans in Sri Lanka.

  99. 1455:

You probably haven't got time to watch it now, but there's a humdinger of a documentary film about Afghanistan's journey into international cricket called Out of the Ashes. Briefly, the game started in refugee camps in Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The national team was given ICC status in 2001, they played in the World Cricket League against the likes of Jersey and the Bahamas for years before gaining ODI status after narrowly missing out on qualification for the World Cup. They appeared in the 2010 World Twenty20 but were well beaten by India and South Africa.

    TEAM NEWS

India: Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Mahendra Dhoni (c/wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer Khan, Lakshimipathy Balaji.

Afghanistan: Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Javed Ahmadi, Karim Sadiq, Nawroz Mangal (c), Asghar Stanikzai, Mohammad Nabi, Samiullah Shenwari, Dawlat Zadran, Shapoor Zadran, Gulbodin Naib, Izatullah Dawlatzai.

  101. 1442:

Afghanistan captain Nawroz Mangal's decision to bowl first may have been taken with Duckworth/Lewis in mind, given that there are some dark clouds looming overhead out there in Colombo.

  102. 1438:

India, I presume, need no introduction. Mssrs Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Kohli and Zaheer are all in the side and will be intent on recapturing the trophy they won at the inaugural event in 2007.

  103.

India captain Mahendra Dhoni: "According to the rules of engagement, you need to have respect for opposition. The pitch will remain the same, it may get a bit slower but I don't think it will change much."

  104.
TOSS- Afghanistan win toss and bowl
  105. 1431:

While we await the toss in the Group A clash, why not have a quick gander at the highlights from England's 15-run warm-up win over Pakistan earlier today.

  106. 1428:

We're back, and ready to bring you another David against Goliath encounter between Afghanistan and India. In case you didn't know it, the Afghan story is as heart-warming as they come, with their unlikely cricketing success coming against the backdrop of decades of conflict. Despite lacking basic infrastructure and having to play international matches in neighbouring Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, they have qualified for the World Twenty20 for the second time in a row. Look out for keeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad, who smashed 77 from 57 balls in a World T20 qualifier against Ireland.

  107. 1405:

OK then, that's yer lot from Australia-Ireland. A bit of an anti-climax if we're being brutally honest. We're going to take a quick breather, but join us again at 1430BST for all the build-up to India against Afghanistan.

  108.
    MAN OF THE MATCH

Shane Watson: "We know how important this game was to make a statement. Taking the first over I can try to get things going, that was the plan and it workied out pretty nicely. I was able to get a wicket to get us off to a good start. I'm looking forward to the bigger games and hopefully it can continue on."

  109.

Australia captain George Bailey: "We started really well and Watto definitely led the charge with the ball and the bat. The pitch suited us nicely but as the tournament wears on it will probably get a bit lower and slower. Shane was outstanding today."

  110.

Ireland captain William Porterfield: "The way we started wasn't great. We were looking to set a platform but it didn't happen. We have played enough Twenty20 cricket to know we can give ourselves a bit more time. They got off to a flyer with the bat, we managed to claw it back and we can't fault the lads for trying."

  111.

Darryl Mason, via text: "Chris (14 overs), with Shane Watson in this form with bat and ball, he could lead this average side to win it, like KP did for England in 2010."

  112.
Alan Lewis, former Ireland captain and BBC Test Match Special pundit

"It's been a difficult day for Ireland. They looked nervous at the start when Porterfield was out first ball. It's a pleasing win for Australia - they've avoided a potential banana skin. Looking at Ireland's two games, with West Indies such a strong side in T20 cricket, this was the game that Ireland felt there might have been a chance, but Australia have coasted to victory."

  113. 1351:

From the moment William Porterfield was out from the first ball of the match (for the fourth time in his career) Australia were always on top and they really stuck the knife into the Irish with that ruthless batting display. Anyone care to write off Australia's chances now?

  114. 15.1 overs:
CHAMPAGNE MOMENT- Australia win by seven wickets

Dockrell tosses one up, White lofts it out to the deep midwicket boundary and the game is up.

  115. 15 overs:
    Aus 121-3

Cameron White gets Australia within spitting distance of the line with a pair of boundaries, then tickles one down the ground for two. Last ball of the over, three needed, Bailey tries to plant one into the stands ... but misses.

  116.

Chris, via text: "Australia will be annoyed losing some wickets to Ireland. Room for improvement if they want to win the tournament."

  117. 14 overs:
    Aus 111-3

Just seen pictures of the India boys scoffing down their lunch. They're up next against Afghanistan at the same ground. Bailey, after a slow start, finally gets hold of one to whip Rankin away for a boundary.

  118. 13 overs:
    Aus 103-3

Australia are making a bit of a meal of finishing this as White swings and misses at a slower ball from Kevin O'Brien. They only score three runs from the over to take us into the 14th, with 21 runs still needed.

  119.

Gareth Soye on Twitter: "Does one detect a few Englishmen still annoyed over Ireland's victory not so long ago?"

Brent Row on Twitter: "Australia might be dominating this match but they've still not been overly impressive."

  120.
Alan Lewis, former Ireland captain and BBC Test Match Special pundit

"Johnston's got a wonderful pair of hands and will be massively disappointed not to hold on to that chance."

  121. 12 overs:
DROPPED CATCH- Aus 100-3 (Target 124)

Cameron White pulls Rankin for two, then captain George Bailey scrambles a single to get off the mark with some assistance from a Kevin O'Brien misfield. Another wide from Rankin, then another dropped catch! Bailey fails to get hold of an attempted pull and Trent Johnston gets his right hand to it at full stretch but can't cling on.

  122. 11 overs:
    WICKET- Hussey lbw b K O'Brien 10 (Aus 95-3)

One blunderbuss departs, another enters, in the form of Cameron White. He gets off the mark with a single to give the strike to Hussey, who is trapped lbw by Kevin O'Brien. The big man roars with delight. Is this a wobble?

  123.

Anon, via text: "Paddy (7th over), it's not like Ireland have a world class squad. Those players may not be good enough but they are at least trying, Porterfield included."

  124. 10.1 overs:
WICKET- Watson run out (Johnston) 51 (Aus 91-2)

Wow. Watson is run out by a tremendous piece of fielding by Trent Johnston as he picks up the ball at short third man and throws down the stumps at the non-striker's end. Cracking work from the 38-year-old.

  125.

Neil Relph on Twitter: "That's the problem with T20 - the match is effectively over after 6 overs of the Australia innings."

  126. 10 overs:
    WATSON FIFTY- Aus 91-1

Run out chance - if it hits he's out - but Ed Joyce misses the stumps by a whisker. Watson smacks another four then heaves his third six over cow corner to reach fifty off 28 balls. Absolute drubbing.

  127.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"There's a lady there with an inflatable kangaroo on the boundary who looked pretty happy with that six from Watson. He hit that hard and fast."

  128. 9 overs:
    DROPPED CATCH- Aus 77-1

Spin from both ends as Twirling Paul Stirling is brought on to bowl. There's a let-off for Watson as Stirling spills a tricky one-handed caught and bowled chance above his head. Then Watson rubs salt in the wounds with a sweep for four followed by a huge heave over deep midwicket for six. I think it would be safe to say that Watson has the man of the match award in the bag here.

  129. 8 overs:
    Aus 64-1

I think you may know the new man - a certain Michael Hussey strides out to the crease boasting a T20 strike rate of 140.4. Nudges and nurdles to get the new partnership going with four singles.

  130.
Alan Lewis, former Ireland captain and BBC Test Match Special pundit

"It's very important for Ireland to keep competing in this game for as long as they can because of the net run-rate. They are likely to lose, they looked nervy early on, and haven't played as well as I've seen them."

  131. 7.1 overs:
    WICKET- Warner c K O'Brien b Dockrell 26 (Aus 60-1)

Warner lifts Dockrell away into the leg side and Kevin O'Brien jogs in from deep midwicket to claim a sharp low catch.

  132. 7 overs:
    Aus 60-0

Australia want to get this done and dusted and, with 10 wickets in hand, I have a feeling they will get their wish. Warner flicks Cusack off his toes for four to becomes the third player to reach 1,000 T20 runs. Numbers one and two? Brendon McCullum of New Zealand and our very own Kevin Pietersen.

  133.

Paddy in Belfast, via text: "Porterfield chose to bat because Ireland can't chase. But for 4 top-order batsmen to have a strike-rate below 100 and 4 wides in an over is criminal in T20. Game over."

Tweet us via #bbccricket or text us on 81111 (UK mobiles).

  134. 6 overs:
    Aus 53-0

Left-arm spinner George Dockrell is given the last Powerplay over and his first ball is a fraction too full and is thrashed through extra cover by Warner for four. Singles follow, then three through the off side as Warner's cut grinds to a halt just inside the rope.

  135.
Jonathan Agnew, BBC Test Match Special

"It's a very disappointing size crowd for the opening match here in Colombo. The announcer is doing his best to drum up some support from the spectators that are here."

  136. 5 overs:
    Aus 44-0

"It's Cruiseville for ths Australians so far" says commentator John Kelly on TMS. Alex Cusack stems the flow of runs a touch, however, with some tidy medium pace. Boyd Rankin hurls himself to the ground to keep a Watson drive to a single and Australia score just four from the over.

  137.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"Watson has impressed with both ball and bat. He's played some terrific shots and hit the ball beautifully. This looks like it's going to be a short game."

  138. 4 overs:
    Aus 40-0

Johnston offers Warner a bit of width and is punished by a four through the covers. A short ball is meat and drink to Watson who whips it from in front of his nose for four more. The next ball is clubbed through extra cover and the last is helped on its way for six! That's Watson's 48th six in T20 internationals, I'm reliably informed. Nineteen runs off the over - this could be over pretty quickly.

  139. 3 overs:
    Aus 21-0

Four to Watson, deflected through fine leg. Then Rankin really lets the side down with consecutive wides down leg. Here's a chance, Watson gets a leading edge but it floats just over the head of mid-off. Two more leg side wides follow and this over is turning into an epic! A better ball cramps Watson up and his hand comes off the bat but they still run a single. One to Warner makes it 12 from a very expensive over.

  140.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"I've got this horrible feeling that Ireland will play well for 30 overs but they had a nightmare starting 10. Nothing wayward so far with the ball, bang on target, but they do need a wicket."

  141. 2 overs:
    Aus 9-0

Time for some military medium from Trent Johnston, although I certainly wouldn't say that to his face. He looks like the sort who wouldn't take too kindly to even the gentlest of ribbings and he's about twice my size! Maybe he heard me because his third ball beats the edge and carries through at a good height. Fine over - just the three runs from it.

  142.

Benjamin Copp on Twitter: "6 an over is the bare minimum in T20. Need to get Warner early and put the pressure on Aussies to have a chance in this game."

  143. 1 over:
    Aus 6-0

Warner takes three balls to get off the mark with a single to midwicket's left. A defensive push from Watson skews off the outside edge for a single. Then Warner plays the first shot in anger as he clobbers Rankin over mid-on for our. Plenty of chit chat between keeper Wilson and Warner and the umpires aren't happy about it. They exchange words with Ireland captain William Porterfield at the end of the over. "Settle your stumper down Will" is the gist of it.

  144. 1241:

No rest for the wicked (or the wicket for that matter). Australia's pursuit of 124 is about to commence. Boyd Rankin to bowl to David Warner...

  145.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"It's been a frustrating innings. The second half demonstrates what might have been if Ireland had managed to get a foundation. The runs flowed pretty easily in the last 10 overs and, in the end, it was quite an achievement to get where they did. I don't think it's enough but there's a flicker of hope and if they can take early wickets there could be some tension. But Ireland look the underdogs in this match after all, sadly."

  146.

Australia spinner Brad Hogg: "We're very happy with that. We've done the job with the ball, so hopefully we can get the runs with the bat tonight. We got off to a good start, there wasn't as much turn as I expected, but I think there would be a bit more at night. I'm feeling as fresh as I was when I was 23 - I'm just disappointed I'm batting at 11, coach."

  147. 20 overs:
    Ire 123-7

What a great time for the first six of the innings! Cusack pulls Watson flat and hard and the ball clears the square leg rope by about a yard. Then Watson, previously immaculate, drags a wide down the off side and Ireland reach the 120 mark with three balls to go. Jones whips a single to midwicket then Cusack bizarrely ducks underneath a bouncer. The last ball is slashed to third man for a quick two, and Ireland finish on 123-7.

  148.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"Ireland would just love a magical 18-run over but Watson doesn't look in the mood to give them anything."

  149. 19 overs:
    Ire 111-7

Cusack has a swing at Cummins but doesn't get enough power to offer a catch to long-on. Then a slow bouncer fools the batsman. Two off the last ball but it's a good over from Cummins, who was given a bit of tap earlier on but has responded well. We'll be seeing this young man in the Ashes next summer I should wager.

  150. 18 overs:
    Ire 106-7

It's ones and twos for the rest of the over as Cusack and Nigel Jones try to nudge Ireland towards a reasonable score. Just two overs to go - I reckon they would settle for 120 now.

  151.

From John in York, via text on 81111: "Re. Alex (15 overs): Wait until England play Afghanistan before saying things like that!"

  152. 17.1 overs:
    WICKET- Johnston b Starc 7 (Ire 101-7)

Starc bowls from wide of the crease to Johnston and catapults a yorker right into the base of his off stump. Beautiful delivery and Johnston's on his way.

  153. 17 overs:
    Ire 101-6

Cummins to Cusack - four, punched over mid-off with plenty of bottom hand. Then another boundary, courtesy of a superb piece of improvisation from Johnston, who steps away and guides a bouncer over the keeper's head.

  154. 16 overs:
    Ire 91-6

The O'Briens are gone, so now it's down to two thirty-somethings to try to get Ireland up to a healthy total. Trent Johnston, the Aussie-born 38-year-old, picks up two through midwicket, then there's a single apiece as Hogg finishes his spell with impressive figures of 4-0-22-1. Who said Twenty20 was a young man's game? No-one? Ok, I'll shut up.

  155.

Alex Butler on Twitter: "Zimbabwe and Ireland have hardly justified including minnows in the big world tournaments."

  156.
Alan Lewis, former Ireland captain and BBC Test Match Special pundit

"Shane Watson has been the pick of the bowlers with his variation of pace, that delivery was decidedly quicker and he set Kevin O'Brien up. Kevin looks so disappointed because he's a big man for the big occasion and I'm sure he thought there was perhaps another Bangalore score in him to bring Ireland back into contention for a reasonable total."

  157. 15 overs:
    WICKET- K O'Brien c Wade b Watson 35 (Ire 86-6)

Alex Cusack is the new batter, and he gets off the mark with a single through midwicket. This was the partnership that did for England in Bangalore - what can they produce today in Colombo? A slower bouncer fools O'Brien as he gets through the shot far too early. Then he tries to help a quicker short ball over the keeper's head, but it's not high enough and it's easily caught by Matthew Wade. Tragedy for Ireland.

  158. 14.3 overs:
    WICKET- N O'Brien b Watson 20 (Ire 85-5)

Niall O'Brien aims an ugly smear into the leg side and is clean bowled by Shane Watson.

  159. 14 overs:
    Ire 81-4

Kevin O'Brien, how I've missed you! Starc drops short and the flame-haired man mountain steps back and pulls. The ball bounces just inside the rope and runs away for four. The last ball is much fuller and O'Brien throws the kitchen sink at it to collect four more over mid-off. He has 35 from 27 balls now and he's giving Ireland a glimmer of hope.

  160. 13 overs:
    Ire 69-4

Kevin O'Brien is taking a few risks now and he's very nearly caught and bowled by Danny Christian, the ball slipping through his fingers for two. The next ball is battered through the covers for four. Christian responds well with a trio of dot balls before O'Brien clumps the last ball of the over to deep point for a single.

  161. 12 overs:
    Ire 62-4

Hogg flips one out of the back of his hand and Kevin O'Brien gets his first boundary via a thick edge. His second follows soon afterwards as O'Brien waits for the ball and steers it through the gully for four. Lovely shot.

  162.

Lumpen Prole on Twitter: "If Ireland play this badly against the minnows in their group I can't see them doing much against the West Indies."

  163. 11 overs:
    Ire 53-4

Maxwell sends down a shocker of a ball but Niall O'Brien can't get hold of it and they only manage a single. One to Kevin too, then a lustier swipe from O'Brien finally finds the boundary as Cummins, diving like a goalkeeper, can only help the ball over the rope.

  164.

Hannah Tomlinson on Twitter: "I don't blame Ireland for batting so badly. I'd be distracted by that hideous Aussie shirt too!"

  165. 10 overs:
    Ire 46-4

A bit more purpose about Ireland in Hogg's second over as the O'Briens both pick up two runs. But no boundaries for four overs now and Ireland are well off the pace at the moment.

  166.
Alan Lewis, former Ireland captain and BBC Test Match Special pundit

"It's been difficult for Ireland with William Porterfield, the talisman and captain, going first ball. They look a little nervous, the running between the wickets has not been assured and they need to consolidate a little bit and maybe then Kevin O'Brien with his hitting capabilities can push the score on."

  167.

Akhil Sharma on Twitter: "Ireland in big trouble here. Desperately need a partnership and an O'Brien special."

  168.

DrunkenMaster on Twitter: "Re. 7 overs: Sam, are you writing like a pirate because it's Talk Like A Pirate Day? I know what ye be playing at, me hearty!"

  169. 9 overs:
    Ire 41-4

Ireland are looking nervous out there, scrambling tentative singles here and there but not playing with any conviction. Kevin O'Brien uses the pace of the ball to steer one away through the gully area. Starc dives full length on the boundary to keep them to two. Three singles off Watson's over too as the rebuilding work begins.

  170.

Sean Gilbody on Twitter: "Having watched every Ireland match for the last three or four World Cups, it's obvious the only way they'll win is chasing a score."

  171. 8 overs:
    Ire 36-4

No review system here, remember, but Wilson would have been a fool to send that one upstairs because he was as plumb as plumb can be. We have the O'Brien brothers at the crease now and boy to do Ireland need something special from the siblings.

  172.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"Australia could not have scripted this any better from the very first ball banged in short by Watson that ended with a wicket. So far everything else has gone perfectly. There was a good catch from Watson to dismiss Stirling, now Hogg comes on and has that little bit of mystery with his chinamen deliveries."

  173. 7.2 overs:
WICKET- Wilson lbw b Hogg 5 (Ire 33-4)

Wilson tries to work Hogg through the leg side, but the ball straightens past the bat and whacks him in front on middle.

  174. 7 overs:
    Ire 33-3

Niall O'Brien scrapes a lucky two from an under-edge that is not a million miles from shivering his timbers as it flies past the wicketkeeper. Daniel Christian is the new bowler, he's got a bit of zip about him as he slides one past Wilson's outside edge. O'Brien aims a cut shot at the last ball but connects with nothing other than thin air.

  175.

O'Boogie on Twitter: "T20 is all about atmosphere & excitement. If a host country can't fill stadiums they shouldn't be a host country sadly."

  176. 6 overs:
    Ire 29-3

That's more like it. Gary Wilson guides his first ball through the covers for four.

  177.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"It was the last over of the powerplay so you can understand Joyce thinking he needed some boundaries but he fell between two stools and the ball skimmed fairly gently to the fieldsman, and so far nothing is going quite right for the Irish."

  178. 5.5 overs:
    WICKET- Joyce c Warner b Maxwell 16 (Ire 25-3)

This is going from bad to woeful for Ireland. After just one run from the first four balls, Joyce tries to crack spinner Glenn Maxwell over the top but gifts a simple catch to mid-off.

  179.

BBC Hindi's Nitin Srivastava in Colombo on Twitter: "Where are the crowds????"

  180.

Rafi in Manchester on text is baffled by Australia's black kit with green trimmings: "Are Australia trying to be more successful by coming dressed as Pakistan?"

  181. 5 overs:
    Ire 24-2

Ed Joyce drills Cummins down the ground and captain George Bailey dives over it a mid-on to concede four runs, much to the bowler's chagrin. Joyce smacks the next ball even harder but it's brilliantly stopped at point. The next ball is short and hoisted in front of square on the leg side for four. Just one powerplay over to go.

  182. 4 overs:
    Ire 16-2

Niall O'Brien comes in at number four and Ireland need him to get this party started. He can't beat the infield with his first two balls though and Ireland are struggling here.

  183.
Vic Marks, BBC Test Match Special

"He's having a good time Shane Watson, taking the first wicket and now the catch for the second. It probably would have gone for six but Watson took a good catch on the run. At the moment we are not in upset territory, although the batting line-up is quite long, but this is far from the ideal start. There's a bit of life in this pitch, it's gone through pretty well and isn't like your typical Sri Lankan pitch."

  184. 3.3 overs:
    WICKET- Stirling c Watson b Starc 7 (Ire 15-2)

Too many empty seats for my liking but those who are there are doing their best to create some atmosphere. There's a band playing and a few Irish and Aussies enjoying the sunshine. Oh dear, Stirling gets underneath one from Starc and Watson takes a good catch running round from third man.

  185. 3 overs:
    Ire 13-1

Pat Cummins, the great hope for Australian fast bowling, is given the third over of the match, and he luzzes it down at quite some lick. Ed Joyce picks up his first boundary through the the leg side as replays reveal Glenn Maxwell's elbow was touching the rope when he fielded the ball.

  186.

rainberryzooms on Twitter: "Porterfield got out first ball v England in Bangalore and we still went on to win." For those who need any reminding, cast your mind back to the 2011 World Cup match.

  187. 2 overs:
    Ire 6-1

Joyce gets off the mark with a neat flick off Starc for a single, before Stirling prods for a single of his own, but the other four balls are dots to keep the Aussies right on top.

  188.

McDoogan83 on Twitter: "I reckon the Irish could do this. Aussies been a bit fragile lately. Come on Ireland, I say."

  189. 1 over:
    Ire 4-1

Ed Joyce is the new batsman but they crossed while the ball was in there so Stirling is on strike and is promptly beaten by a beauty from Watson. Aggers is a bit bemused by Watson's darker hair - trying to hide a bit of grey perhaps? Ropey start this from Ireland as Stirling dinks one away in the air towards midwicket, sets off for a run then scrambles back into his ground. Fine finish to the over though as Stirling leans back and smashes the ball over point for four.

  190.

DaveySloan on Twitter: "Hard to figure out who are favourites? Bookies managed to - we're 7/1 outsiders! #comeonireland."

  191. 0.1 overs:
    WICKET- Porterfield c Starc b Watson 0 (Ire 0-1)

The first ball is dug in short, Porterfield goes after it and pulls it straight down the throat of Mitchell Starc at fine leg. What a start for the Aussies.

  192. 1100:

Here come the Ireland openers: captain William Porterfield and the portly but powerful Paul Stirling. It's a sunny day with a few wispy clouds overhead. Shane Watson will deliver the first over. Let's play some cricket.

  193. 1056:

A quick chance to point you in the direction of some interesting reading while the players belt out their anthems. In an interesting column, Alec Stewart reflects on the omission of Kevin Pietersen from the England Test squad to tour India. He says he hopes the issues are resolved soon and that any "anti-KP factions in the dressing-room" will be broken up for the good of the team.

  194.

LewisCPS on Twitter: "Looking at the T20 world rankings, could Ireland move above Australia with a win or good tournament?!" Feel free to predict away here...

  195. 1052:

No David Hussey in the Australia side, which might surprise a few of you. Here's captain George Bailey's blunt explanation of that call: "You can't fit seven into six."

And here's Bailey on veteran slow left-armer Brad Hogg: "He's 41 going on 18 and his energy is phenomenal."

  196. 1049:
    IRELAND TEAM NEWS

There's a very familiar look to the Ireland team, which never seems to change much: WTS Porterfield*, PR Stirling, EC Joyce, NJ O'Brien, GC Wilson†, KJ O'Brien, AR Cusack, DT Johnston, NG Jones, GH Dockrell, WB Rankin.

    Ten minutes until the off.

  197. 1048:

Test Match Special has chimed onto the airwaves with Jonathan Agnew's dulcet tones. We'll bring you the pre-match views of the TMS boys in a moment. But first a quick reminder to pepper us with your patter. The ways and means are the same as ever. Chuck a text to 81111 (UK), tweet via #bbccricket or email tms@bbc.co.uk with For Sam Sheringham as the subject.

  198. 1041:

Now then, get your head around this one. The World Twenty20 started last night, with Sri Lanka's pummelling of poor old Zimbabwe but England are still playing warm-up games. It was a stodgy old affair for Stuart Broad's side earlier on this morning. Luke Wright top-scored with 38 off 36 balls in England's 111 all out before Jade Dernbach and spinner Danny Briggs claimed three wickets apiece in Pakistan's 96-9.

  199. 1039:
    AUSTRALIA TEAM NEWS

No word on the Ireland team yet, but here's the Aussie line-up: Shane Watson, David Warner, Mike Hussey, George Bailey (capt), Cameron White, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, Dan Christian, Brad Hogg, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc.

One or two fresh faces in there, and one of two slightly old and haggard ones too - Bradley Hogg, 41 years old, take a bow.

  200. 1036:

Two matches today folks, both at the Premadasa stadium in Colombo. Following hot on the heels of this one, the two other teams in England's group - India and Afghanistan - go head to head at 1500 BST. I'm looking forward to that one.

  201.
TOSS- Ireland win the toss and bat
  202. 1032:

Yes folks, it's a right old ding-dong to kick-off Group B of the World Twenty20 with the Irish taking on the no-longer-so-mighty Australians in Colombo. It's hard to figure out who are the favourites for this one - until recently Ireland were actually placed higher than Australia in the official world rankings. The Aussies have since sneaked above them into ninth place but their captain George Bailey will be extremely wary of slipping up against a side who have plenty of batting beef and a fair bit of bowling guile in the form of Somerset spinner George Dockrell.

  203. 1030:

Just 18 months ago, a burly Irishman with dyed pink hair blasted the ball to all parts of Bangalore as Ireland pulled off an astonishing World Cup victory over England. Today, Kevin O'Brien returns to the world stage with Australia in his sights.
