County Championship Division Two, Derby |

Derbyshire 275 & 197-4 beat Hampshire 272 & 198 by six wickets |
|
Derbys 21pts, Hants 5pts |
Usman Khawaja scored his second half-century of the game as Derbyshire beat Hampshire by six wickets to win the Division Two title.
Derbyshire have never been promoted before but were relegated in 2000 - the first year the championship was split into two divisions.
Bilal Shafayat top-scored with 81 as Hampshire were dismissed for 198.
Khawaja (72 not out) was supported by Ross Whiteley (38no), who hit a six to lead the hosts to the title on 197-4.

The hosts wasted little time in the morning session, taking the last four Hampshire wickets for the addition of 58 runs.
Shafayat could only add 29 to his overnight total before being run out and Wes Durston (2-36) helped mop up the tail.
Openers Wayne Madsen (24) and Paul Borrington (21) set Derbyshire on their way, but both fell in consecutive overs in a pre-lunch wobble.
Durston added 23 in just under an hour and Dan Redfern contributed 11, before Khawaja and Whiteley came together to guide Derbyshire to the title and a £135,000 cheque.

BBC Radio Derby's Dave Jepson:
"A terrific victory for unfancied Derbyshire to take the Division Two title.
"Shafayat and Chris Wood held the hosts up for 45 minutes in the morning but, once they had gone, the rest fell away.
"Set 196 to win, two wickets immediately before lunch with the total at 45 set home nerves jangling. But Khawaja was the rock around which victory was eventually secured.
"Aided by the middle order and Ross Whiteley in particular, who hit a quick-fire 38 with five sixes, the home side could celebrate their first silverware for 19 years at a little after three o'clock."

Anyone who saw Derbyshire bowl out Hampshire and then batter them around the ground on a very dull early autumn day - Brilliant Ross - knows how much they deserve this. I'm tired of Yorkshire whinging. Give Derbyshire their due. They are the least fashionable club in the land, but they have developed some young talent. Next year will bring what it brings. DCCC walk the walk. Yorks are all talk.

@ 34 yes an advantage you gain from developing international players, it's also a disadvantage to have them removed from your squad for lions and international matches. Swings and roundabouts.
Congrats to Derbyshire, just happy yorks were promoted, anyone would have taken this outcome a month ago.

Still seem to be many bitter Yorkshire fans around. Please refer to comment 17. Also, Yorkshire benefited from a number of contrivancies including one very gnerous declartion by Gloucestershire. Derbyshire won all of their games without any inter-captain discussions. In addition, it must be an advantage having international players (Bresnan) able to waltz into first class matches on the second day

Well britseattle, for a Yorkshireman you are sooooooo gracious in congratulating your nearest neighbors. Let's be honest, if Guptall hadn't have left half way through the season then Yorkshire wouldn't have been in sniffing distance, indeed, may have lost a game or two. So, let's be honest........

I congratulate Derbyshire on taking the title but let's be honest it wasn't a fair reflection on how it was decided.
I mean Yorkshire lost 0 games and had more games rained off. Is this something they have control over.
It seems a little unfair in my book.
