Gloucestershire's James Fuller and Liam Norwell took three wickets each to stun Northants on day one at Bristol.
The visitors closed 147 runs behind on 73-7, with Fuller (3-25) and Norwell (3-21) wreaking havoc.
Luke Evans (4-38), playing in only his eighth first-class match since making his debut for Durham in 2007, earlier helped bowl the hosts out for 220.
Andrew Hall took 3-37, while Alex Gidman (56) and Jonathan Batty (55) top scored for the home side.
