Bottom side Leicestershire are in sight of recording only their second County Championship win of the season after ending day two with promotion hopefuls Hampshire on the rack at Grace Road.
Resuming on 334-8 they totalled 356, with Shiv Thakor, marooned on 85, missing a first Championship century.
Matthew Hoggard then rolled back the years to take 4-27 as Hampshire were bowled out for 181.
After not enforcing the follow-on, Leicestershire then closed on 68-2.
Openers Will Jones and Mike Thornely fell cheaply but Ramnaresh Sarwan increased their lead to 243.
Home captain Hoggard was well backed by Alex Wyatt and Wayne White, who took three wickets each.
Sean Ervine top scored for Hampshire making an unbeaten 58, while David Balcombe hit 31 in a ninth-wicket stand of 50 - the biggest of the innings.
