Somerset-Sussex: Trescothick century as Panesar stars too
|
County Championship Division One, Taunton (day two, close): |
|
Somerset 247 v Sussex 161-6 |
|
Somerset 3pts, Sussex 3pts |
Somerset skipper Marcus Trescothick hit the 50th first-class century of his career against title rivals Sussex.
But he was partially upstaged at Taunton by ex-England team-mate Monty Panesar, who took a career-best 7-60.
Resuming on 89, Trescothick made 123 out of Somerset's 247, with Panesar taking three of the last four wickets.
But second-placed Sussex did not find batting too easy themselves against the title outsiders, reaching 161-6 by the close, still 86 adrift.
Trescothick had scored only 28 runs in three Championship innings since his return to action following early season ankle surgery.
He was in commanding form from the start on Tuesday, quickly adding the 11 runs he needed on Wednesday morning to reach his latest landmark.
But there was pointedly no applause from the Sussex fielders, who were convinced that the former England opener should have been given out to a catch at short-leg on 60 the previous day.
In his 20th season at Somerset, having made his first-class debut in 1993, Trescothick, now 36, played for England in 76 Tests and 123 one-day games.
As for Panesar, the England left-arm spinner performed superbly from the River End, extracting turn and occasional bounce to complete his best-ever haul.

A batsman who at his best provides great entertainment. Yes his form has fluctuated, but form does that, whereas class endures. Not a prima donna either. To give up megabucks on the international circuit in favour of family life does nothing to lessen him in my view, just the opposite in fact.

This comment section if nothing else, proves the type of person who feels the need to share their views on the bbc page. Youve got an article about one of the best players we have produced over the last 15yrs, and it musters 30 comments. In other sections you then have 100s defending KP's behaviour. Sums up a lot of people, wont say well done to MT, but theyll defend KP regardless of what he does.

@11 and @13 - Poor comments from both of you. KP nor Cook have scored 50 FC 100's. And his injury this season has meant very few games. He scored a majestic 100 on Wednesday which I saw and he is without a doubt - Still good enough to play at the very top level

@11 He's been injured and he's only now making his way back after having an operation, look at his averages for the past few seasons. As if he needed defending, didn't he pick up the MVP award last year?
