Half-centuries from James Foster and Adam Wheater, and three quick wickets in Kent's second innings, put Essex in charge on day two at Canterbury.
Resuming on 14-0, the visitors built up a slender first-innings lead of 47 with Foster (76) and Wheater (82) putting on a sixth-wicket stand of 126.
Charlie Schreck impressed with the ball for Kent, claiming 5-51 as Essex were bowled out for 273.
The hosts then slumped to 9-3 in reply in the final 7.3 overs of the day.
