Neil McKenzie scored a half-century as Hampshire had the better of a rain-hit day two against Gloucestershire.
The hosts resumed on 265-8 but Hampshire needed only 21 balls to dismiss them for 271, Kabir Ali finishing with 3-69.
McKenzie (52 not out), who hit nine fours in nearly two hours at the crease, helped lead the visitors to 104-2, trailing by 167 runs.
Ian Saxelby and Benny Howell took the wickets for the home side.
